Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

It's a disgrace. I've been getting really bad flashbacks from Windows times and Yosemite is close to being the last nail in that coffin. I can't believe that these issues keep on happening. It's not only OS X it's iOS as well where each update seems to make everything worse. It's almost like they expect you to buy a new mac every six months. We've got ~20 macs at my office that are 2.5 years old, and they're all getting the ball of death all the time, wifi not working, they're slow and god awful. What used to be a nice no-IT-problem office has turned into a nightmare and nothing has changes in hardware, the only thing that has changed is OS X.

Once again, to no one in particular. Much complaining here as usual, an no more information to go on except in a few posts (thank you people!). Just to give a peak into how these questions are handled elsewhere (not always exemplary either, but nevertheless):

    https://nakedsecurity.sophos.com/2014/10/22/os-x-yosemite-wi-fi-problems-can-you -help-us-solve-them/

Also a good link to summarize the majority of useful tips in this topic. As well as clearly illustrating the very mixed causes all your complaints may have. This is not one single issue, there are many, however related they may be. Enjoy- if still possible at all!

Hats Off,and, I believe, a bow and Thank You, Sir is in order here. A re-focus was in order. The link is invaluable information and the form we need to maintain here in Apple Forums. In short, we all have experienced WIFI woes in this forum. To put in perspective, 1,803 posts of this "known" problem. Apple has had Yosemite downloads 10 fold of that. Wow! I talked to a co-worker who upgraded his MBP - no issues. As for myself, I stand corrected from deterring from Yosemite 10.10.1. I am not a Computer Genius nor a Terminal whiz. The link will be invaluable to get us going as, I'm sure, Apple is on top of it. I must keep myself reminded of that fact. Let us help each other out here. Complaining without posing a solution is just plain, complaining. People stop listening at that point.

Good Form, Sir and thank you again.

You're welcome, John. No big deal, just hoping this link will be of use to some people here. You see the IT savvy people on the Sophos forum struggling as well, so no reason to be ashamed here. Only details, we need details and configuration info. Actually, I'm looking for the exact model or serial # of your Mac right now. In order to find the exact Broadcom WiFi chip present in that. It is starting to seem like Yosemite code was written to accommodate the latest Broadcom WiFi/network chip used in the iPhone 6, whereas no Mac as yet carries that chip. And no Mac with an older chipset (Broadcom’s BCM20702?) should query WiFi on more than 1 channel to my knowledge.

And I'll advertise my source once again: check out Mario Ciabarra's WifriedX workaround: shut down AWLD and Airdrop, even if only for temporary experimental purposes: https://medium.com/@mariociabarra/wifriedx-in-depth-look-at-yosemite-wifi-and-aw dl-airdrop-41a93eb22e48

Hope we get to see the bottom of this...

Followup: Broadcom BCM4358 and associated OSX/iOS8 coding may very well be the prime suspect in this here issue. Any White Hat hackers savvy enough here?

    Yes, a challenge...

Thank you, hexdiy!  I have a Mini with 2.5 GHz Core i5. 4 GB Memory. Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB. WIFI Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 Firmware ( 7.15.124.12.10 ). My Router is Linksys EA3500. My Modem - Motorola SB6141. Router is manually configured no Cisco Connect software installed. Okay, so I am using Yosemite 10.10.1 right now, Wi-Fi only on the 5 GHz bandwidth of my router. WPA2 Personal Mixed.

I just wrapped up a clean install of Yosemite on a WD My Passport for Mac USB 2.Slooow. Here's what I did:

Turned off Time Machine under Mavericks and ejected all ext HD's except the WD. Shutdown. Disconnected Ethernet and Ext. Speakers. Please note to all. A USB Keyboard is handy to do clean OS install of any kind. Powered up and ZEROED THE EXT. WD Passport not just erased it.

Using the Yosemite Install on a USB Thumb Drive, performed the install.

On the "Welcome" screen, I shutdown holding the power button. Went and smoked. Unplugged the USB Thumb Drive and powered up. Feels like the first time.

During setup I logged in to my 5 GHz WIFI. I did not migrate, allow find my mac or set up keychain. Then, no way was I going to upgrade to iCloud Drive and loose my iCloud, what?? Set up your account. I did not allow log in with my iCloud Account. I set up my own account password.

Under System Prefs > Security and Privacy Turned on Firewall

Under Sharing > Edit, named the .local subnet the same as my router's Hostname I gave it. Quit Prefs and Restart.

System Prefs > Network, with Wi-Fi highlighted, click Advanced, click DNS Tab and note DNS Server Address i.e 192.168.(?). Then click WINS Tab I changed WORKGROUP to HOMEGROUP but I don't think this has an impact. Click + button and type in the DNS Address. Hit Ok and Apply. Quit Sys Prefs. You guessed it. Restart.

    System Prefs....again.

Network....again. Click pull down Gear button and under Connections List select Set Service Order. I have a Track Pad so Bluetooth DUN will be at the top of the list. I want my Track Pad first and Ethernet second then Wi-Fi. Some of you may want to drag Wi-Fi to the top of the list. That was easy. Now would be a good time to set your Master Password while you're in Prefs. Now, let's do another Restart ( still less restarting than Windows, right? )  Now I'm going to monitor my WIFI over the Holiday. Note that I did not turn off Bluetooth or anything else than what I have specified. No third party apps!! No Antivirus ( just say no to dope ). No Mac Clean, Mac Keeper or DiskDoctor. If we are to test, we need to test the inherent nature of OS X without Third-Party interference. This is what I've done on my system tonight. I'm sticking to it and will monitor. I will not guarantee it will work for all Macs of my build date, but, I'm putting this out there for your review. So far I'm still connected and I type slow. This was a "CLEAN" Install. I have never really trusted OS upgrades to properly migrate system settings, but, that's the way I am. I'll plug up Ethernet and stuff tomorrow.

I've just given up, and went to buy a couple of netgear power line adaptors, to switch back to the ethernet connexion.

It has costed me 50€, but at least everything is back to "normal" now.

My deep sympathy for those who keep on struggling with this issue on their macs !!

    Good luck and everyone.

Since 10.10.0 I am using ethernet cable since it was impossible to work with wifi. :/

It ***** to have a long cable crossing from one room to another. Anyway, that´s probably the gift Apple is giving us for Christmas. "Back to old times where all connections should run inside cables."

Welcome back to the past! Vintage!

Solution to Yosemite WiFi Issue supplied by Apple Support 12/22 - I've been dealing with the WiFI dropping issue since installing Yosemite. Ive tried most of the suggested solutions ( http://osxdaily.com/2014/10/25/fix-wi-fi-problems-os-x-yosemite/ ) short of rolling back or a complete reinstall.

I contacted Apple support via chat today and the tech provided the following solution which seems to have resolved the problem for me:

    1. Open System Preference
    2. Select Network
    3. Select Advanced
    4. Select Wi-Fi
    5. In the Preferred Network window  delete all  wi-fi networks listed. The window should be empty when you are done
    6. Click Ok
    7. This should take you back to the Network pane
    8. In the window on the left select ''Wi-Fi'
    9. Click on the minus sign on the bottom of the window to remove Wi Fi service.
    10. Click Apply
    11. Add 'Wi-Fi' back by clicking on the plus sign at the bottom of the window and then selecting wifi from the drop down
    12. Connect back to your Wifi network (select enter password etc)

I did this nearly 24 hours ago and the connection to my local wifi network has been stable for almost 24 hours. Perviously this have been dropping at least 3 or 4 times an hour.

So to follow up. This morning prior to going to work, I connected Ethernet. Using my procedure, I went to Network, Ethernet highlighted, Advanced button I put in my DNS Server Address under WINS Tab. I noticed that HOMEGROUP renamed itself back to WORKGROUP. Going to leave it. I still do not believe this has any impact. At this point I still have not disabled Airdrop or turned off Bluetooth. Everything "as is" other than my listed User Settings in previous response. My WIFI came right up this morning when I powered up. Will continue to monitor WIFI and connection speed with Yosemite "as is" on my Mac Mini. Will add Firefox as my secondary browser this evening and add my HP 6520 Wireless Printer. Will not change Safari as my default browser. I want my testing to include incremental changes and note any adverse side effects. So far, so good. I see that <cstewart61> is having positive results without a complete reinstall and I did a "clean" install. Let's keep posting. This is good stuff. We're making advances with just User Interface settings. Awesome! Patience and Troubleshooting method is a virtue that requires calm, cool collective thinking. Keep it simple first, right?

Thank you, this fixed my problem. Turned the computer off 6 times and back on and wifi connects each time. Will be back if something else appears.

I went in the Apple store today and was totally surprised NOT to see any £60 ethernet cables.
