Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

I can't be absolutely sure (don't want to risk mental illness checking 132 pages..) but I think you'll find the experienced users of this forum are largely absent from this thread because by and large experienced users do not upgrade until at least 2nd or 3rd version of new OSs.

    Hey guys,

Similar wifi issues with Yosemite. Airport Utility running on brand new IMAC 27" 5K can't see brand new 3T TimeCapsule. Brand new 15" retina macbook preloaded with Yosemite can't see brand new TimeCapsule either. My 15" retina macbook(mavericks) has no issues. I was about to attempt the ugly job of putting Mavericks on these new machines but noticed one older machine I had upgraded to Yosemite had no issues. Now I tried updates to Yosemite and still no TimeCapsule so I took a brand out to the box IMAC and did an OS reinstall as though the drive was corrupt and presto - no more wifi issues at the moment with Yosemite. Dumb yes but seemed to work every time I did it.

I know people have been discussing discoveryd and mdnsrepond conflicts. Is it normal to see discoveryd running under _mdnsredpond user and sending/receiving so much?

    Andrew Nalthy,

Discoveryd running under the  _mdnsrepond user is normal. Whether the the amount of traffic you're seeing is normal or not is harder to say since it would depend on a lot of things, but there is no reason to believe they are abnormal. Bear in mind Discoveryd would be expected to be sending and receiving data fairly frequently.

I should do this last suggestion too - switch of iDevices - but am away from home again now for a few more days so will do so on my return.

Interesting how experienced NIL problems whilst away from home over christmas....

If there is anybody who understands wireless diagnostic reports just ask...

@ wombat2k & Andrew Nalty: I've been taught lots of posts ago by wombat2k that _mdnsrepond is a virtual user of a discoveryd ProcessID. Thank you, wombat 2k for pointing that out again.

Discoveryd running under the  _mdnsrepond user is normal.

Seems Apple has kept some of its nomenclature intact. Thence the (mine too) confusion.

My point was that the coexistence of com.apple.mDNSRresponder.plist and com.apple.discoveryd.plist on a Yosemite system (maybe leftovers from a migration and not a clean install) may cause irreparable clashes. Causing DNS no longer to be resolved. Causing Discoveryd to run wild and gobble up 100% of your CPU (i.e. 1 whole CPU core). But no system crashes, finder crashes, or kernel panics. That is the tricky part. Near invisibility.

However, this theory does not hold to the light of the fact that also out-of-the-box Macs seem to be affected.

What, oh what is the common factor? As I've stated before: we're dealing with a multi-headed beast here.

Having both plist files is probably fine. They are basically preferences files. You can safely ignore them. It's going to be confusing, but you can have DNS resolution working even if Bonjour services are down. As for Discoveryd gobbling up 100% CPU, I've seen that a few times, and I suspect that it's probably due to the fact that the scope of the original mdnsresponder seems to have been greatly increased in Yosemite. I don't think that issue is related to the WiFi issues though.

I think the main issue is that a lot of people seem to have different issues. Some look like they are related, but others look unrelated. For instance a gentleman (or lady) was complaining about their Router crashing. I suspect that's unrelated. Somebody else was complaining about their Time Capsule not being visible which also appears to be unrelated.

Basically I think the Wifi problem can be described as this:

    • Disconnection on coming back from sleep
    • Random Visible Disconnection (visible in the Wifi icon)
    • Random Transparent Disconnections (Wifi icon shows connected)
    • Random momentary Slowdowns

Please don't make sweeping judgements - I've had this issue with a fresh out of the box MacBookAir, so it's nothing to do with upgrading early.

I've installed 10.10.1 and the beta 10.10.2 and still have the wifi issue - my Mac is a doorstop.

Hey guys, I looked through quite a lot of the solutions posted. The only one that worked for me (day 4 and counting) was to delete the files in the SystemConfiguration folder.

    Step 1:

    Navigate to:

                   /System/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration

Step 2: Make a backup of all the files in this folder

Step 3: Delete all these files and restart your computer

Step 4: Set any system preferences back to what they initially were if desired

Step 5: Connect to your WiFi

Step 6: You should have working and stable wireless

    Good Luck all!

Perhaps I spoke too soon (see previous page). Not as far as the wireless fix is concerned (I'm still going without a dropped connection after almost a week), but I've recently noticed that the computer won't sleep now unless I either close the lid or use the "Sleep" command from the menu bar. Sigh.

I know that this is a bit off-topic, but it's also another data point to consider. I had originally thought my infrequent drops might be due to some overly aggressive power management "feature," and this lends credence to that theory. On the other hand, as others have noted, the whole thing remains a bit of a mystery.

My last hope was to reinstall Mavericks. That's not possible for me. I don't have a time machine backup and Mavericks is not in my purchase history in ITunes, and I don't have any friends to give me a copy, so I can't download it. Not that I could have downloaded it anyway, because I have no wireless connection!

Apple have managed to devise an upgrade policy which can turn your computer into a brick. What a bunch of idiots. Going to install Debian Sid on this brick now, thanks for nothing Apple... You'll be dead very soon with this kind of nonsense.

    chturne,

Do you have no WiFi connection at all? That would be pretty atypical compared to most issues described here, so you might have a different issue. Unfortunately I can't seem to find a way to read your previous posts to see your description of the problem.

My Wifi is dropping out intermittently and just generally degrading in ways that are hard to explain (see the previous 133 pages of attempts to explain...), meaning to download a 5 GiB+ file (Mavericks image) will take longer than I'm prepared to wait. We're talking *weeks* here. It can't load webpages, we're on the order of BYTES PER SECOND for goodness sake, worse speeds than dial up! Thanks Apple for your innovations!

Again I'm just a layman, but my bluetooth has been involved every time I have lost wifi connectivity and I can only get things back by opening my laptop and working with that keyboard until I get back on to my 5Ghz network as my 2.4 will be invisible.  Then I bring back up the bluetooth and everything works until the next day or I try to move to the 2.4 network.

Interestingly, I took my car in for service and mentioned that my iPhone6 would not play music with my car as it had before.  The service agent told me they get 300 such complaints a week currently and that the voice command also doesn't seem to pass to the car as it did before.  They said the bluetooth in the iPhone6 is not according to the standard that this manufacturer has been using for years and Apple is one they spend a lot of time to get right and support.  He said he hopes they come out with a fix to the bluetooth soon as it's killing them.
