Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

I CAN understand your frustration that people came on this forum to criticise / make irrational comments about  the early Mavericks and now people having problems with Yosemite are saying Long live Mavericks.  But how do you know they are the same people? And if you were running a business using Macs (I'm not) and / or were having a torrid time with Yosemite (I'm not) wouldn't you perhaps be a bit negative?  and come here for support?  I count my blessings that Yosemite 10.10.1 hasn't been too awful for me but for the wider good I risked 10.10.2 seed testing.  I can't claim to understand a 100th of what Hexdiy and others are trying out but I do think they have people's interest at heart.  Forgive me if I have missed it but apart from implying that people have messed up their installation before installing Yosemite and are therefore to blame for their Yosemite problems what have YOU offered by way of constructive advice?  I do not have know where to begin with tinkering and "fine-tuning" software - i never have; I don't have AVs installed; the only Apps I have installed are from Apple's App store which foolishly? I believed were safe to install.  I have always followed the instructions on downloading upgrades, Time Machine backups etc  and don't remember these including using EDDs etc. which you applaud others for doing. And I do worry about people trying these various fixes and being able to take advantage of the official answers when Apple provide them.

Perhaps when you find some humanity and empathy you might get some real Points to your credit.  Happy New Year to you.

Using Yosemite 10.10.1 on my retina Macbook Pro I have to turn my Wifi off and back on about 6 times a day. This is driving me nuts. If Bluetooth is switched on Wifi will not work at all.

Reminds me of the IT Crowd: "Have you tried turning it off and back on again?"

I'll not buy another Apple product. I've had a gut full. Considering how widely Yosemite was so called "tested", it's incredible this problem persisted when it was released and it *still* occurring.

    Other bugs include:

Inability to open links in the background when right clicking in emails

Time displayed as "an" instead of "am"... sometimes.

Symbols not centred in red/yellow/green circles in top LH corner of windows... sometimes.

Cursor symbol not changing to correct kind... sometimes. (For example will display text insertion outside of text box instead of arrow symbol).

Wish I was using a Chromebook...

After running with WiFried for a fair mount of time, the issues has started happening again. It now consistently loses the connection again on wake, which is interesting since it had gone for a long time with only a few mild disconnections here and there.

I've been playing with my AP placement in order to get better throughput and had changed its placement a few days ago, so maybe that's what triggered it. I was also working from the theory that wireless signal strength had an influence and was able to double throughput with it's new placement.

I've been very skeptical with the reported Bluetooth issues (I believe they are probably a different problem), however as I was pairing some Bluetooth headphones on my wife's computer, I noticed the wifi had gone. I don't want to read too much into it since it was a one-off and I've been using keyboard and mouse just fine, but it happened.

Haven't been there Paul, though I should have been. Sorry for the offtopic. But hey: nous sommes Charlie, no question about it, n'est ce

pas? Some have played Neil Young's "Keep on rocking in the free world" here. They are not my political friends, but Neil Young still holds strong here

    Keep an open mind notwithstanding!

Sorry, back to Yosemite troubles here. Brief interlude.

I have a similar setup and I believe I have it stabilized except for some wild calendar issues (dates and appointments changing on me).  I noticed the bluetooth was off overtime the WiFi was and found I had to reset both.  Sometimes that was in the AM.  I turned my power settings to never let my laptop sleep when it is on my desk (where it is connected to wireless keyboard, mouse and a Dell monitor).  I have not had the WiFi or bluetooth issue in days now as my machine never goes to sleep.  I also heard from my car dealer that the iOS8 doesn't work in their cars and they are waiting for a fix from Apple and get hundreds of complaints each week.  So, while there are issues with Yosemite, I believe the bluetooth trips up the wifi and can be worked around if you don't mind leaving your laptop on a lot until you get a fix.  Mine is a Macbook Pro 13" Retina without a hard disc so I'm thinking that it may not be hard on the unit.

Caches rebuilding, wombat2K? Start afresh, kill OSX 10.10 uptime. Check OSX again by a fresh start. Read up on Kaspersky Labs + OSX.

    Uncle!

OK, Apple you win.  I loose.  I give up.

Could someone please recommend a new wireless router and configuration of it that will eliminate this insanity! Please, NO Apple equipment recommendations.  I’m having similar problems with my iPads after upgrading those OSs.

PS: Apple, if by some chance you are reading this then shame on you. This behavior is deplorable. Ignoring an issue that is affecting so many of your loyal customers and leaving them to flap in the wind. Intimidating the press to keep them from printing any negative articles. Well, this will certainly impact my future buying decisions. And, as my grandma used to say ‘what goes around, comes around!’

I haven't any devices that run iOS 8. However, I and my wife have a Mac Mini ( late 2012 ) and Macbook Pro ( mid 2012 ). I can recommend the Router and Cable Modem that I currently use. I tested Yosemite on my Mac Mini and did not experience near the Wi-Fi issues reported, nor did I run WiFried or turn off bluetooth. Here goes:

I have a Motorola ARRIS SB6141 Gigabyte Cable Modem.

Linksys N750 (EA3500) Router. I have My router manually configured. No Cisco Connect software installed. I gave my Router a Host Name: i.e. My-Network

In Yosemite this is my configuration in System Prefs ( note the hostname you gave the router is a unique id name. Do not use the name in the following steps )

    For MAC

If you have Ethernet plugged in. Now is the time to shutdown and unplug it. Then proceed. We're focused on Wi-Fi right now.

System Prefs>Sharing> click Edit button. Give it a unique name like Sams--MBP or Sams-Macmini. the .local is automatic. No spaces or periods in this name the dash is acceptable. Leave Computer Name as is, unless you feel the need. Just make sure IT'S NOT THE SAME AS .LOCAL NAME. Click Ok. Restart the Mac for this setting to take effect.

Desktop up. System Prefs>Network highlight Wi-Fi click Advanced button. Then click on WINS Tab. You should now see the The name in NetBios. If you choose, you can change WORKGROUP to HOMEGROUP or leave it alone. Click Ok and Apply if you made changes. If all is well now you can plug up your Ethernet and have both. Yosemite will not have to resolve any .local names and your Mac should go to sleep and wake up fully rested and Wi-Fi and all. Okay, these settings worked for me, anyway.

    iOS 8

I can say, will connect to 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz on my Router. Just make sure that you give both a separate SSID and Password in the router. In the EA3500 Smart Wi-Fi router there is Device Prioritization. You can give 3 devices High Priority for streaming. Good stuff. My Mac Mini, MBP and my wife's iPhone 5s iOS 7.1.2 are High Priority connected to 5 GHz Wi-Fi. While the wireless printer and my Andriod can only connect to 2.4 GHz.

Hope this helps you out, my friend. I feel you. I am an above average user but an average user none the less. I hope these steps help you achieve positive results like it did for me. In Mac you have to do the network foot work. Windows spoon feeds it to people. The last thing OS X needs right now is a "Networking  Wizard". Sorry Windows fans.

That would be 10.10.2 Beta 4. Reverting to Mavericks: read this topic, page 135. Tip from Ozziesmac:

Hello, i read some pages of this thread.

a while ago I suffered this problem (when I had never appreciated happened, at least as much) and the solution was ultimately change the wifi:

wpa tkip + aes only to Auto WPA / WPA2 and AES

With these changes the moment I took about 10 minutes without a break, and were once every minute.
