Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Right. I promised myself to hold my tongue on this forum, but found something new which may be helpful here; flush your DNS and UDNS caches with discoveryutil:

    http://osxdaily.com/2014/11/20/flush-dns-cache-mac-os-x/

Any improvement after that? I Bet. If positive, do it regularly. Easy enough.

    The best of luck!

I had promised myself to hold my tongue on this forum, as all seemed to have been said, but found something new which may be helpful here; flush your DNS and UDNS caches with discoveryutil:

After following this whole thread from the beginning (sic) I'm fairly confident that resetting both your Unicast and Multicast DynamicNameServers will get your Yoshite more or less on track again. As usual, every single workaround converges upon a very similar, common family trait. So one workaround may be tantamount to the other, with the diffference that every new piece of information will bring more insight into the mechanism. Discoveryutil has been new to me until I found this OSX Daily publication. Similarly, I've never known that Unicast (UDNS) and Multicast (DNS)  DNSes were two separate things. Unicast being your normal network buddy, but Multicast coming into play especially since Yosemite, being relied upon for discovery, connected iDevices, Handoff/ Continuity, iCloud and what not.

Any improvement after that? I Bet. If positive, do it regularly. Easy enough.

    The best of luck!

If you disconnect Bluetooth  then you will get the Wi-Fi working.

It took me a while before I  discovered this.

Maybe 10.10.3 will get both working.

Exactly, Wifi works perfectly with Bluetooth off. As I mentioned before, I just worked with a USB mouse and after a couple of minutes I switched Bluetooth on and everything works.

And since 4 days by now, I have PERFECT WIFI!

Just give it try, let your USB Mouse in your mac

I Know its crazy but it works for me. I had crazy problems with the stuff since 10.10.1. and I have been days in contact with Apple Engineers who are trying to help me with Bluetooth and Debug diagnostics

I give up debugging. Waste of time. The problem just keep coming back.

For now my solution is to use my old AirPort Express as wireless bridge, connect to my iMac Retina via Ethernet. That works for me since mine is a desktop. Maybe you guys can get a cheap Wi-Fi USB adapter as temporary solution until Apple come up a patch for the WiFi issue, permanently.

I do not seem to recall this being posted already:

My Apple TV + iPhone Remote app cannot connect to iTunes on my iMac (10.0.2). EVEN when my wifi is working, as I am now posting this from my iMac.

Like I posted earlier, my MacBook with Bluetooth turned off works like a charm. With the iMacIi can't turn BT off since I don't have any wired mouses.

The wifi drops still occur, with a few restarts/turning Airport on-off I can get on the internet, but isn't really what you want to do everytime just to work with wifi (thats also a bit slower then usual).

But with the ATV en Remote thing..i dunno, that should point to something, I hope?

This situation is becoming intolerable. I cannot get any use out of my retina mac book as its a wifi brick.

No amount of fiddling around with the various fixes have made a difference. The guys at the Genius Bar are simply not equipped to help. I've wasted £1k on a useless piece of equipment and no one want to know. It's not fit for purpose under the sale of goods act, so I'll be taking the item back fife a refund. It'll be a fight even to do this, but it's clear there is a problem. I simply cannot use the machine as it was intended.

    Here's what worked for me:

    1.  Install the dashboard app Airlock from the app store http://www.apple.com/downloads/dashboard/networking_security/airlock_danielpimle y.html

    2.  Use Airlock to find what the least congested channels for the 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands are in your particular location.

    3.   Set the  BT HH5 so that the two bands have different SSID and passwords.

    4.   Set each of the two bands to the least congested channels.

    5.  Connect your computer to each of the two bands in turn and see which gives the best performance and stability.

    6.  In wifi preferences, set the best option as the preferred connection.

I have found that, whereas the 5Ghz band may give a slghtly faster speed, it is more influenced by distance and indeterminant factors than the 2.4 Ghz band. That said, throwing chicken bones on the floor and reading the runes seems to be at least as scientific. If you can't establish a stable wifi connection, think about  using powerline adapters. BT used to supply these for BT Vision subscribers but they are no longer recommended for this use and, as a result, there are plenty on offer on ebay for around £15 to £20 a pair.

Maybe one more tiny fraction of tortured patience, Bogheadben.  Could you please add a .local to your nameserver list in System Preferences>Networks>WiFi>Advanced>DNS. With "Airport" selected in the initial System Preferences>Networks window please?

As per this article: http://ma.ttias.be/slow-login-dns-via-active-directory-on-osx-mavericks-and-yose mite-local-domains/

Any better? I think this will preclude NXDOMAIN to come into action unless maybe with a sleeping Mac. We'll see.

Just an amateur trying to debug some...

Sorry for your plight as well...

Nah, sorry, I'm at the end of my tether on this subject.

I'm a user, and most defo not a technician. I'm fed up with a product that's clearly not fit for purpose. For whatever reason, the implementation of the OS X is making the machine completely useless for working on wi-fi. My machine was bought on 29th Dec 2014. It's clearly a design fault that no amount of tweaking will sort and under the Sale of Goods Act, a full refund is in order, no matter what the fob-offs I'm gonna get when I return to the store.

Disappointed really does not cover it. Apple have my £999. I have a machine that does not work.

A posted by someone elsewhere, "The end user should not need to jump through these (fix) hoops anyway. There needs to be a patch which accomplishes these task for the end user. Not everyone is savvy enough to make edits to system files and manual PRAM zaps."

It's a nonsense, it really is.

I did the upgrade from Maverick to Yosemite for my iMac (2013) yesterday and that was a very very bad decision! Now I have the same problem with an instable WiFi-Connection. I can't believe I haven't read about the problems before my upgrade. Now I'm in the same **** s#+!? as everyone here. I feel tricked! There should be a big red note about the WiFi problems for everyone who wants to upgrade to Yosemite! Otherwise it is irresponsible! **** it!!

well, this thread will top 1,000,000 views soon, maybe then something will happen.

A couple of people here have mentioned that 10.10.3 will NOT address WiFi & BT, is that true ?
