Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Having Ethernet and Wi-Fi simultaneous is a bit tricky to determine speed just under a standard speed test. Ethernet will be your primary. Wi-Fi allows connectivity with a  Wi-Fi wireless printer, iPhone, etc. and is mostly a secondary connection with Ethernet plugged up.

Thanks but... sorry .... until I added .local and switched to OpenDNS (Oh sh*t, I forgot to mention that in the last two posts) browsing  on words always brought up my home hub and I could click thru - what I don't understand is why that failed today for the 1st time.. and does it matter?

I am really sorry if the OpenDNS switch is important and I have wasted your time

Windows Server Domain. I.T. cringes and grits their teeth if a suit wants his Mac set up on the Domain. This even goes for Mavericks and earlier. Most of your consumer Routers highly suggest Windows Internet Explorer 9 and above or Chrome to use their Web Configuration page.

Yes I do well recall that which is why I waited till I retired util buying my 1st Mac

Simply resolving and establishing your Home Network in your Hub and/or Router should be enough. As previously posted, simply changing your ".local" name in System Prefs>Sharing>Edit to a name unreflective of your computer's name, sets a NetBios Name that starts the DNS resolve.

Hmm, I think I may have misunderstood earlier post - I edited my Sys Prefs for the DNS tab on both ethernet and Wifi to move to openDNS and i added ".local" to the Search Domains BUT have just checked wifi settings and openDNS IP has reverted to previous.  Why?

    jndupuis1 wrote:

Then go into Prefs>Network highlight Wi-Fi click Advanced button change WORKGROUP to HOMEGROUP do this under ethernet as well (this is optional) works for me.

Just done that now.  Will my NETBIOS name change form my mac's name when I restartt?

My router now sees the same computer connected in Mavericks and Windows. Like Hex said, leave IPv6 in Auto because you will find that most web sites are not IPv6.

I don't run Windows on the Mac.  I have Ipv6 as "Link local only"

    Lordy lordy

UPDATE after restarting:the change from Workgroup to Homegroup has stuck but still get error message "Safari can't open "bthomehub.hom" because Safari can't find the server "bthomehub.home".

I haven't mentioned Speediest recently - so not sure why this reply from you? Thanks

No worries. I just made mention of it as you know I tend to ramble. Speaking for myself, Speed test does act goofy when I use it when Ethernet and Wi-Fi both are connected and running at the same time.

NetBios Name is for WINS Server purposes and will not change your Computer Name nor your Network Name. NetBios helped me so that my ISP's DNS actually saw a NetBios name. It allows you to be recognized on WINS servers. The DNS resolve is inherent.

Is your Server Name correct? I believe your server name and default gateway is what your ISP provides and cannot be changed. You see, I have not run into this myself. You're not wasting my time. I find issues of this sort to be very tutorial. I may learn something from you that you didn't know you were teaching.

Hey people, MAKE SURE YOU LET APPLE KNOW IT'S STILL BROKEN!

    Send them feedback here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/

Here's what I just sent them:

This week, I wiped my disk and did a clean install of Yosemite from a USB key

Sometimes after waking from sleep, network connectivity will become intermittent (tested by pinging my router IP address, every minute or two pings will "Request timeout" for 10 or 20 seconds, before working again for a few minutes after which the problem repeats). Once the computer has entered this state, only a reboot will (temporarily) fix the problem (toggling WiFi off and on does not help). The problem does not happen every time the computer wakes from sleep, but does happen at least once a day, so is irritating.

The problem was not present in Mavericks.

    My setup:

    2013 Macbook Air, 8Gb ram, 512Gb SSD

    Network: 5Ghz 802.11ac WiFi

    Router: Virgin media SuperHub ac

Yes, I just did it, thanks for the link. Perhaps this is the only way to make them listen. Please, everyone, make our ignored voices count.

Yes, I have already given my info to them some weeks ago. I, like everyone, am wondering what and how long it is going to take Apple to fix Yosemite before the announcement of the release of OS X 11.11.0!!

    This is BIZARRE!

All of a sudden - this morning - after weeks of frustration and no connection to the internet, i opened the lid of my MBR and - voila - instant internet connection. Is this coincidence that just yesterday I wrote to complain to Apple as per your suggestion? Am I omnipotent? Is this a coincidence or did Apple do something surreptitiously, overnight without announcing a major software upgrade? Is this to avoid continuing public embarrassment over a major flaw in Yosemite?

Actually, who cares - it works!

    Finally.

All - please let me know if I am a one-off, or there is actually something different.

    Thanks.

Apple store geniuses baffled but agree there is a problem. Refund ...

Well, this one solves ALL of my networking problems - finally.

No more Wifi-Issues, no more Ethernet Issues, no more Bonjour- or DNS-Issues.

Only thing that won`t work is Airdrop between iOS 8 and Yosemite. No problem thanks to DropCopy, Instashare and others.

BTW: No problems after updating or reinstalling 10.10.2 combo ... mDNSResponder stays active.

    Try it.

    In a word - NEVERMIND!

    One big false alarm.

Still doesn't work - this was clearly an aberration.

This piece of crap software still does not do what it supposed to do. I give up. I'm reluctant to do the reinstall of 10.10.2, but Ijust might have to bite the bullet and do it. Not exactly how I want to spend my time.
