Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

To Apple and whom it may concern,

It is of my personal opinion and experience with Yosemite that basic Network settings should be out of the box - ready to go for the Average Mac User without having to dabble with their Network Settings. That being stated, I would also like to say that Discoveryd is not the choice for OS X Yosemite which is a Mac OS X not an iOS. Keychain and other features of OS X Yosemite under Discoveryd renders a Mac Desktop into nothing more than a glorified iPhone screen with some "cool" stuff for the kids. When ALL options are used, this is NOT a functional Desktop Environment for the serious Mac PC User who needs Functionality and Productivity. mDNSresponder of Mavericks and earlier versions of OS X is the only reliable way of succeeding with the Consumer and Business as a whole. Discoveryd IS broken, mDNSresponder IS working fine. Update it, sure. Do not fix what wasn't broken or reinvent the wheel. Just making matters worse.

Workaround not yet published in this thread:

Not particularly to you John, but to all concerned here, particularly to those who may have performed a clean install, but migrated old troubles afterward from a Time Machine backup, possibly using Migration Assistant:

Please search for IO80211Family.kext on your Mac. Especially if you have multiple copies of it, check their version numbers. There may be a clash going on here between identically named kernel extensions with different version numbers (7.1 being the most recent) . Revert to IO80211Family.kext 7.0 any way you can, and see what happens. Thrash all other versions, empty thrash and restart. And only 1 version of IO80211Family.kext should reside on your system! Even if you decide to stick to your resident v.7.1. Any duplicate antiquated kext is bound to cause havoc.

Except for 10.10.2 WiFi issue dupes: their salvation may lie in IO80211Family.kext 7.0.

Re: wifi keeps dropping since Yosemite upgrade

Kernel Extensions tend to show up very well in an Etrecheck report. Why not post one? This thread has been bereft of those mostly, whereas it should facilitate diagnoses. http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

Thanks PJF30 for pointing this out to me via mail!

First and foremost, I would like to extend a big congrats to you and Paul for sticking through this. I, for one, can say I have learned a lot. Hex even with us in our times of off the cuff venting, you still maintain on-track with this thread. I have seen these etrecheck reports as well in different posts. These reports would be nice in this thread. In my Yosemite I have not Set Up Family or Keychain, etc. I should generate a report as soon as possible just out of pure curiosity. Create an Account for my wife again and enabling Keychain and other features one at a time to see what is really going on in Yosemite.

This may not have anything to do the weather, but, I discovered as my batteries get very low in my Magic Trackpad, TX Rate tends to start getting on the low side. Maybe I'm hypersensitive, just seeing things or Discoveryd with Bluetooth are acting up. Maybe I'm just seeing things and it's a coincidence. Hmm? You and Paul are keeping me posted and posting. I'm just an average guy with a Mac, that can be dangerous to myself and others.

I had indicated last month that I would post back with a report about my employer's impending "roll out" of Yosemite. We have several thousand Mac users (mostly engineers) where I work and a similar number of PC users, all sharing wireless and wired internet. I believe some ~ hundreds are now on Yosemite.

    Typical Mac setup:

    * Macbook Air running Yosemite, with SSD and full disk encryption, including brand new Macs as well as older ones just upgraded to Yosemite

[other older Macs on the network are up to 3 years old, running 10.7, 10.8, 10.9]

    * Anti-virus and anti-malware installed by company IT team; also installed is extension to enable them to push out updates to company computers

    * Cloud backup software, which works over WiFi or wired ethernet

    * WiFi N connectivity on all computers. Many employees use WiFi exclusively to connect.

    * Wireless mouse and keypad with bluetooth on all the time

    * iPhones with iOS 8 most common but there are numerous other Android-type smartphones as well, all on WiFi

Yosemite was "rolled out" here February 12, so it has been out here for about two weeks. I am on our IT advisory board and asked to see statistics on user trouble tickets for Yosemite and wireless access. We are very heavy network users, constant WiFi activity. Very few tickets submitted, no more, and even apparently less, than older Mac OS. The IT crew told me that they have been very pleased with the transition to Yosemite here. This company would grind to a halt with even a hint of the problems reported here in these forums.

I'm just reporting data here, and can't claim to understand why some people report trouble here. I don't doubt the reality of what they have experienced, but have noted a number of people posting that a change to their router or configuration "fixed" the WiFi access issues.

YYour comment about low battery... when my printer resumed working yesterday I had given the power lead a good push as well as holding WPS for 3 seconds... There was always enough power to input commands on the printer and it printed each error report but could an imperfect power cnnctn cause a WPS handshake failure?

I'll add my experience to this painfully long thread.

    Current setup:

-Late 2013 macbook pro retina running 10.10.2

-AP:  have both an ASUS RT-66U and a ruckus R700 routers, both using 2.4 and 5ghz radios.  Was hoping the new Ruckus would fix the issues (didn't)

    Symptoms:

    -Intermitted WiFi disconnects, packet loss

    -slow association after sleep

    Testing Method:

-running frequent ping to various known-good point on network such as router or other wired endpoint.  ping -i 0.2 192.168.1.1 for example

-While running ping I can force it to drop the network connection by doing the following:

-Turning bluetooth on or off (I leave it off)

-doing a file transfer or running iperf to generate network load.  Iperf at full speed causes nearly immediate disconnects, iperf at limited throughput (say 10 or 25mbit) still causes disconnects but not as immediate.  Measuring disconnects by observing packet loss/timeouts in the ping window

-Note that both APs are in the same room as the rMBP and have extremely strong signals (the R700 is amazing)

    Other observations:

-Behavior seems more frequent on the 5ghz radio.  Running the iperf test (at any speed) on the Ruckus or ASUS 5ghz band causes almost immediate disconnect.  Makes me think it is possibly a hardware issue with the 802.11AC portion of the wifi adapter.

-This same behavior was observed on a mid-2014 retina pro as well which I no longer have (so maybe it's software)

-Opened case with apple support and spoke to the "wireless team".  They had me delete some plist files and then drop into the recovery partition and ping.  Still saw some dropped packets but no ability to generate real load to stress things, so inconclusive.  They suggested testing in a whole different environment.

-Running the same frequent ping test and wide-open iperf on an endpoint running windows generates zero lost packets, even though it's quite far from the AP and running the test for 10 min straight.

    -

    Additional testing plans:

-Walk across street and test in neighbor's network

-Bring late 2014 retina pro from same neighbor to my network and reproduce test.  If exact same behavior exists then i highly doubt it's hardware.

Welcome any comments or thoughts and will post results of additional testing.
