Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Tom

OK, link seems fixed. Anyone wants to post an illegitimate link here? Seems the bots mainly search the URL, so make a tiny change after "www" after pasting the original. As a test: the rest of my post above:

Do not click on the highlighted  link to "Kext Utility" in the quote. The "narod ru" source is not trusted at least by me. An alternative download from the mhackintosh scene: InsanelyMac.com: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/topic/140647-latest-kext-utility-yosemite-super -speed-edition/

I'm fine, and have been for some time now. Not sure if it was 10.10.3, changing my WiFi signal to static, or the 'delete-and-add-a-new-wireless-service' hack, but I'm happy. Now, that said, I only connect at 2.4 GHz, don't use Bluetooth (never have, so it's always been disabled), and my MacBook Pro's too old to use AWDL0. Throughput's never been an issue for me, and only sporadic, infrequent drops -- all seems good. Cautiously optimistic.

    MacBook Pro 6,2 (Mid-2010)

    OS X 10.10.3 (14D87h)

    Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (5.106.98.100.24)

Good to have some positive feedback here. And thanks for the technical details! Are you saying you are actually running 10.10.3 beta? Would be good to know, not much feedback on that here either.

Hello Hex, Here is what etrecheck took of my system. I am running Yosemite 10.10.2 off of my WD ext. HD. I have Keychain set up and am using Firefox as my non default rogue browser. So far I'm still in the game with this thing. Wake up from sleep checks good, Airdrop checks good and Bluetooth is fine. Wif-Fi is holding stable through it all. I still will not let go of Mavericks it is on the primary HD, just can't let go of it.

Sorry you are experiencing problems. The fact that you are having difficulty on WiFi with such a wide variety of devices, including those NOT running Yosemite (iPhone 6, iPad) makes me wonder if maybe the common thread for each of your problems is not Yosemite, but rather your router setup or local environment.

    Right, John,

that is 1 spotless, super clean Etrecheck. Reads like a clean install. And no migration bollocks. Praise yourself lucky! Except 1 thing: wanna configure your Time Machine sometime?

Not needed if you have your own way of backing up, you know! Congrats! And Thanks for the feedback.

Hex, I'm just old fashioned, I guess, I created a different Apple ID just to play around with Yosemite. My original Apple ID is for my Mavericks only. So my Yosemite install is on an external USB drive isolated from my main system HD and logged in to a different Apple ID.  Over the past couple of months it is quite apparent that Apple is going full launch with Yosemite. I can no longer download Mavericks under my new Apple ID as I was able to just a few months ago. So, that said, I will not let go of Mavericks as my primary OS X. If I don't want Yosemite or don't want to boot it up. I simply pull the plug on the WD My Passport USB HD. I do not need Time Machine for Yosemite right now.

To all who are reading this, it my hope that some of you will try out and are trying out Yosemite on an External USB HD before you go and make it your Primary OS X. You may not be able to get back unless you save your original OS X Full Installer to a Thumbdrive, Disc or other removable media. Back up your original install and have a current Time Machine backup. Upgrade to Cloud Drive, and risk losing your iCloud. Test drive Yosemite first by isolating it to an External HD - No Upgrade necessary. I believe this was a recommendation published in just about every Tech article from the beginning. OSXDaily, MacRumors just to name a few.

    Hex,

In comparison, you can see here that my Primary HD OS X Mavericks is healthy as well. Just note how CPU and RAM hungry Yosemite was in my previous Etrecheck as compared to Mavericks. Good Stuff, man!

What type of router do you have? How old is it? Have you customized it? Do you have security enabled, MAC address filtering? Adjustments to the router settings can make a big difference. For instance, if the bandwidth is set to 40 MHz or "auto," some environments experience so much RF traffic that reliable connections are impossible on 2.4GHz until the bandwidth is set (reduced) to 20 MHz. The iPad and iPhone do not have as many options for WiFi setup and should connect straightforwardly. The fact that they don't makes me worry about your router setup. Can your iPhone and iPad connect easily to WiFI in coffee shops or other networks? Is the 10.6.8 Mac running wireless-n or wireless-g? What year and model of Mac is that?

It might not be surprising that the new iMac is not connecting as the fact that the iPhone and iPad both won't connect reliably indicates something in your network might be needing adjustment.

If your new devices are new enough, they should still be under warranty and applecare and you can take them to an authorized center to verify that they indeed are working properly.

    Hello Steve,

My situation when I first bought my Mac Mini is an example of what you are saying. My ISP was advertising and delivering speeds that I could not achieve and never gave any thought to upgrading my Cable Modem through them until I bought my Mac Mini. To avoid ISP charges I Upgraded my Cable Modem, myself, with a Motorola Arris SURFboard capable of Gigabyte 10/100/1000 Ethernet. Of course, my Router had to be upgraded from a Linksys EA2700 10/100 Ethernet to a Linksys N750 (EA3500) 10/100/100 Ethernet with Wi-Fi speed of over 300 Mbps and Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Technology. A little manual configuration of the router and changing some Network settings in OS X, I was in business. All my devices and Apple devices capable of connecting to 5 GHz, are, and reliably. The other devices that can only connect to 2.4 GHz do it reliably as well.

I agree with you 100%. It all starts with the Router and the Cable Modem. To experience today's ISP's advertised speeds, may require upgrading equipment one or two years old or older in some cases. Wireless AC is coming up fast. So even my Router may need upgrading within short amount of time.

    Hi All,

Here are my weird observations. I am not tech savvy so have stayed pretty much out of that aspect on here.

This past week my iMac has seemed somewhat better. I didn't have any downloads that didn't finish, I didn't have to reboot my computer once this week. This past week I have been getting the message that my Keyboard and Track Pad batteries were low. I usually wait till the last possible minute to change them.

This afternoon I changed the batteries on both. trackpad was at 5% and Keyboard was at 3%. Right after changing the batteries went to download a file. I watched it slowly decrease in speed from 3.1GB down to 250kbs. Knew it wouldn't finish so stopped it and rebooted. Once rebooted web pages taking longer to load, wifi froze had to reboot. Decided to take the new batteries out and put the old ones back in. Have not had an issue.

So it does sound like the issue is for me is bluetooth related and possibly because the old batteries don't have as much juice they don't seem to be interfering with the wifi? I'm trying to find my old wired keyboard and mouse to play around with.

Does this make any sense or just coincidental?
