Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

    - 10.39 GB of page-ins is enormous as well as unlikely. That is an improbably high amount. First thing that needs investigating & fixing ASAP! Any page-in larger than the physical amount of ram in your Mac should theoretically be impossible. Paul, please check Activity Monitor to see if it is also stating these excessive page-in numbers!

I think this is not correct. I just did an experiment with my Macbook Air running 10.9.5 with 4 GB memory.  I see in Etrecheck Page Ins growing as I open and close more and more applications.  It was 3.6 GB and it slowly grew to 4.2 GB as I open some Microsoft Office applications and several others. The Mac seems to be working fine, yet the Page Ins did grow to more than the 4 GB memory I physically have. I believe this is a cumulative count (Page Ins) that will clear upon reboot.

That said, 10.39 GB is a lot of Page Ins.  PJ30's Etrecheck does show Microsoft Office and Adobe applications, those applications do pull in a lot of memory and could lead to large amounts of Page Ins and Page Outs.

Hi John & 626, sorry about not hanging around last night - was beat.

My problem was not recognising when to quit the download/install.  I stopped myself downloading when I saw the "restart necessary" in the app store but must have overlooked the reference material saying quit in the middle of download  to prevent install

Are you sure that that a seed install can be broken off so as to leave it downloaded but not installed?  No sooner had I said download than it was showing "installation in progress - 7 minutes" or it restarted immediiately - can't remember which.

Paul, once you do create a USB Installer of Yosemite. Tuck it away for safe keeping. You will need to sacrifice an 8 GB thumb drive or 16 GB. I recommend not writing to it at all. Safe Keeping for internet free smooth clean installs, if needed.

    Take care.

Happy to do that --- when I am sorted

Nothing afwul Paul, just some awkwardness that needed more research. Didn't have much time for research last night. Sorry!

Johns Etrecheck needed no research whatever.

    A few things:

    - in general looked like a rather neat report, but with a few puzzling anomalies which need further evaluaton.

-" [failed]    com.brother.LOGINserver.plist": this may be about some antiquated software that came with your printer; it being only a preference list and it not loading anyhow, I suggest you thrash it and restart. Preference lists will auto-rebuild themselves anyhow.

I TRIED TO UPGRADE BROTHER PRINTER FIRMWARE AND DRIVERS LAST WEEK BUT FAILED AND JDP SAID NOT TO WORRY... SO I DIDN'T BUT HAPPY TO DELETE THE .PLIST ITEM

BUT FOR 2ND TIME - LIKE FAMILY.KEXT SEARCH, I CAN'T FIND ANYTHING TO DELETE ....

You are having trouble finding those items because the built in Spotlight or Find for OS X does not search all locations. Try downloading and using Easyfind (or some similar program), it will find those items if they exist. Search by file/folder name, e.g. in Easyfind.

And it can't be "helped to find them?

Thanks Steve, you have described both what I was trying to do and what I didn't do. AT EXACTLY WHAT point after pressing Download should I have interrupted it and how? Before or after the Restart?

Paul simply Re - Download Yosemite 10.10.1 from Apple Store and copy it from your Downloads Folder to your Applications Folder. Then from there follow Mac Worlds instructions from the link I posted you. Like I said, you'll find the Mac World instructions and the Highlight, Copy and Paste Terminal Commands to be intuitive and the commands assume your OS X Yosemite is in the Applications Folder. Piece "o" cake. Cheers!

HA! we will see - think we have different tastes in cake.... Q1 why would I download Y10.1 when I am seed testing versions beyond 10.2? (and Yes you're right I should NOT be beta testing and will not again) Q2 at what EXACT point in the download AND HOW do I interrupt to keep it in downloads folder?

    Ciao x

    EDIT

I have an uptodate TimeMachine - -15 mins before downloading X.X.3 -- backup (which I have isolated so it can’t be overwritten.

Can i revert to x.x.2 using TM, then download x.x.3 again but with coitus interrupt us this time -- and direct it to the USB?

How do I stop TM from updating when i plug it back in to revert?

I had the same wifi dropping connection problems with my brand new retina macbook. I tried all the fixes I could find online and the one with the custom locations in network settings seemed to work for me. At least for about a couple of days. Then the issue came back and it was worse. I couldn't hold a wifi connection for more than 10 seconds without being disconnected.

I even tried to restore OSX but without an internet connection that is not possible since I couldn't download the OSX image from Apple's servers (thank you Apple).

I was worried that this might be a hardware issue so I decided to take drastic measures. I came across this article (http://bleeptobleep.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/mac-install-windows-7-or-8-on-externa l.html) on how to install Windows on a USB drive. I thought that if wifi worked in Windows then this would indicate a software issue. And that was the case. I install windows and the bootcamp drivers and the wifi worked flawlessly. I tried it for 3 days and no disconnections what so ever.

Then I decided to boot in OSX and try to find another solution to my wifi problems. But there were none anymore. It seems that the Windows installation might have played a part in fixing the wifi adapter (maybe reset or something). But I took no chances. Since wifi was working I went on and restored a fresh copy of Yosemite installation.

Its been 1 week now in OSX without any wifi issues. I hope this fixed the problem.

If you are in a similar position as I was and you ran out of options consider giving the above a go and see if it helps you.

    Hi Paul,

You will have to use Time Machine through System Prefs to get a back up copy of the OS X Install App. This way you are only restoring the App. not your entire system. That's the beauty of Time Machine. If you download Yosemite from Apple, let it download. Just don't follow through with Installation. 10.10.1 is what is available for download. After a new install you simply update to 10.10.2 through App Store Updates. If you already have a copy of OS X 10.10.1 full installer, copy it to your Apps folder. Erase your USB and name "Untitled" and follow the steps for createinstallmedia.  If you have the 10.10.3 App saved some where just copy it over to an ext drive or like you said download it again. Createinstallmedia needs a the usb stick all to itself during it's process. Cheers!

    Hi nhcowboy,

Glad to hear it! It was amazing when I did the simple NetBIOS name change for myself. I left my Computer Name as is, but either way it seemed to resolve addressing issues to my Router.

Through it all, though, I feel quite somber about purchasing my Apple Mac Mini. OS X Mavericks or Yosemite isn't quite what I thought it would be. I'm glad mine is not for any use but leisure/home. If I had to depend on this thing for Business use I would be furious. My IT guy at work won't even bother with Mac. Our Corporation is Windows Server Domain. Well, expensive lesson learned. That is why I am NOT budging from OS X Mavericks and why I am running Windows 7 Pro in Boot Camp. My silent rebellion and defiance to Apple. I have a case of the 3D's against Apple Macintosh: Disappointment, Disheartenment and Disillusionment. Yosemite is a play toy for me, not to be taken seriously as a true Desktop Operating System and for testing purpose only. If I knew I could run Snow Leopard with no glitches, I would. However, SL is not a valid option for a Late 2012 Mac Mini. Alright. I got to get back on the topic of this Thread. Glad that name change helped.

    Hi jndupuis1

I have a case of the 3D's against Apple Macintosh: Disappointment, Disheartenment and Disillusionment.

This about sums up my feelings. I'm a user, I spend "extra" to avoid this never ending world of forums, talk rounds etc. Now it's a daily business. I want to get going, first I need to check my emails. Mmm? will I get a connection? sometimes after mucking around it works after a few minutes. Sometimes it's 45minutes. Sometimes it's fine and then at the crucial moment when it's vital to be online... you are not connected to the internet. My 3 D's are in capital letters. DISAPPOINTMENT, DISHEARTENMENT AND SEVERE DISILLUSIONMENT. How is it possible that a company with the resources of apple cannot at least say they have a problem? APPLE - I want this fixed yesterday!!! I have no interest in technical solutions - I didn't give apple my money to become an IT technician. I want to switch on and go - as promised in the adverts!!!

You got the "no such file or directory" message in Terminal because you forgot the \ character following the X.

    So: /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Yosemite.app/etc.etc.etc.

    A \ should appear before each-and-every blank-space-character
