Mar 2, 2015 6:54 AM in response to Adam van Gaalenby PFJ30,Thanks Adam. Is there a similar rule about whether there should be a blank?
But would you also agree with the earlier poster that I wouldn't have been successful anyway cos the download had already installed?
I am advised in another_place_of_we_may_not_speak that only a full install can be directed to a different disk than the one you are booted in when you download so I am now waiting to get clarification on meaning of "full install" - does that mean I have to wait for 10.10.3 or 11?

Mar 2, 2015 7:12 AM in response to tomstephens89by bibsys,My MacBook Air (11-inch, Mid 2012) would disable my whole home network forcing me to restart the whole thing. None of the tips have helped me and neither was the 10.10.2-update. I simply had to stop using my MacBook.
The very unsexy solution for me was to buy a USB wifi dongle. But hey, it works like a charm.
Still hoping that the issue will be solved though.

2.4 rock solid; internet blisteringly fast (ethernet on in tandem) 5ghz old nonsense of invalid password; systems pref>network dialogue box says connection but wifi icon still cycling away. WiFi diagnostic usual Environment, Best Practice and Lan Connectivity: standby for news after shutdown/ router restart.

Mar 2, 2015 10:17 AM in response to lee.oby Peggy330,I now know that I'm not the only one has this problem.
I had this annoy problem forever. I had latest OS installed but it keeps dropping the connection and wants to connect to something I don't want. It seemed to that if I was not on my laptop for 3 minutes, it will drop the connection. Annoying as ****!!!

What does it want to connect to, Peggy330? Your problem may have nothing to do with the Yosemite WiFi issue. Sounds more like adware to me...
Please elaborate. Thanx!

Mar 2, 2015 12:39 PM in response to PFJ30by Adam van Gaalen,I don't know if that would have solved the problem, just wanted to make sure you had the right command available.
I just came to your discussion because I have networking-problems too since upgrading to 10.10!
ONE big difference is that I see problems in wired connections and a temporary workaround that seems to help is use 'caffeine' to prevent system sleeps (at random occasions)...
You could try to type (in Terminal.app) like (I wonder if that would fix WiFi problems too):
sudo /usr/bin/caffeinate -s -t 3600 (1 hour, 36000 for 10 hours, etc.) -

So I come home after machine has been sleeping for about 4 hours, touch BT keyboard, desktop lights up and there blinking loud and clear is the wi-fi icon. Great I think: odd but great. Ha! I type in my password, the windows open up and there is the wi-fi icon flashing away as it looks for a signal. 60 minutes later it's still looking. Does ANYBODY understand what the F*** is going on?

Mar 2, 2015 2:36 PM in response to PFJ30by jndupuis1,Hi Paul,
Assuming your 5 GHz SSID is the same and you only changed the password. Or you renamed your 5 GHz SSID and changed the password. Wi-Fi may be trying to connect to pre-existing Wi-Fi Network that your router used to broadcast.
Go into System Preferences>Network Highlight Wi-Fi (one click) click Advanced Button on the bottom bar of Preferred Networks window, use minus button and remove all of the previous connections. Shutdown your Mac. Unplug Ethernet. Power up. Then log into your 5 GHz band before attempting 2.4 GHz. If successful go 5 GHz only on your Mac if all is well. Make sure your password (passphrase) is correct in your router. You want to be WPA/WPA2 Personal. I know you know this. Just trying not to leave out an instruction. Keep me posted. Cheers!

Mar 2, 2015 3:36 PM in response to jndupuis1by PFJ30,Hi JDP
Before I saw your reply HEXDIY had suggested a switch-off. I deleted the service, added a new one (Usual name 3) and all beautiful since.... This must be the 4th / 5th time I have deleted/ added Network services, why does it keep reverting? No need to answer - just a rant
Thanks

Mar 2, 2015 3:38 PM in response to Adam van Gaalenby PFJ30,Thanks Adam, I recognise the caffeine fix from similar ones posted earlier, with the basic intention of stopping machine from sleeping? As I have never had problem losing/reconnecting to wi-fi after sleep I will give this one a mix
THanks
Paul

Mar 2, 2015 4:18 PM in response to bibsysby HJS880,PFJ30 - I too am totally frustrated. I'm not a system guy, but I have tried virtually every suggested fix that i could understand (about 90%) - and none have permanently worked. They are all bandaids on a much larger problem, an essential flaw in the upgrade downloaded from Apple. I therefore have given up and will doing, from what is my perspective, a hail Mary - doing a reinstall via USB. This makes me totally nervous; I have backed up all my files on a flash drive since I cannot access my Time Capsule as part of this problem. Time Machine has been rendered totally useless (just received another notice that my backup has failed). I have tried all the Pondini suggestions for fixing TC and they don't work either. This problem only exists on my laptop - Late 2012 MBR. My 2 IPads and 2 iPhones (5S) both work flawlessly on my network. I will post following my big undertaking and hopefully will not be using my laptop as a brick any longer.

Mar 2, 2015 5:22 PM in response to PFJ30by hexdiy,This must be the 4th / 5th time I have deleted/ added Network services, why does it keep reverting?
That, Paul, is the main question now... To revert or not to revert. Do you have any iCloud synching services active?
If yes, temporarily shut down any iCloud services for testing purposes. Isolating some factors will surely do no harm amid all the confusion here.
That being said: with the many network changes you have performed, iCloud may still be trying to synch to your original network name or some remnants of it. I thought iCloud solely depended on Apple ID but who knows?

Mar 2, 2015 5:53 PM in response to HJS880by hexdiy,Can't you- for testing purposes and for the time being- run an RJ 45 network cable directly from your MBP to a LAN port of your Time Capsule, HJS880? Ought to work. Run it over Ethernet only until this WiFi storm blows over. At least you will have a valid backup.

Mar 2, 2015 6:54 PM in response to hexdiyby hexdiy,Never forget what we are trying to do here: isolating Yosemite and third party WiFi network gear variables.
We cannot replicate the issue. Mario Ciabarra can. For the umpteenth time: https://medium.com/@mariociabarra/wifriedx-in-depth-look-at-yosemite-wifi-and-aw dl-airdrop-41a93eb22e48
