Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Hold your horses, John! Are you pretty sure what you have seen at work was not simply Spotlight re-indexing? It will touch all your files for sure. MobileDeviceManagement worker is the associated process, to be seen in System Profiler.

And another blatant one we must have missed all along this long thread: a major network change in Yosemite, according to the master authority Linc Davis @ DNS overrides not working in Yosimite:

The "local" TopLevelDomain is reserved for Bonjour and shouldn't be used for unicast DNS. It seems that Yosemite enforces that restriction where earlier versions of OS X did not.

(redacted to expand TLD to TopLevelDomain)

I am trying to put the question to Mr. Linc Davis as we speak: "how do we keep Yosemite from using TLD names for Unicast DNS on some problematic WiFi routers?"

There may lie the cause of many Discoveryd malfunctions. Well, touch wood.

hexdiy, my humble apologies! Spotlight was re-indexing. Bad week at the office and having one of those days. On topic I do have to report that I could not duplicate reported issues in my installation of Yosemite 10.10.3. Airdrop - works. Bluetooth - works. Wi-Fi - works (TX Rate: 365 - 405 Mbps). Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and USB 3.0 coexist and play well together. Wi-Fi upon sleep and awake - works. WINS NetBios .local - works. No Wi-Fi dropouts during Safari web browsing or downloads - works. Finder and Spotlight - obviously works. Installation and use of MS Office for Mac 2011 - works. IPv4 - works. IPv6 - Set to Auto in router ( no IPv6 ISP support in my area ) works? My HP all in one 6520 wireless printer bonjour enabled - works. Yosemite dock and icons - suck. Otherwise 10.10.3 check good. No defect noted.

iCloud not upgraded to Cloud Drive

Keychain I will not set up

User Account log in using Password not Apple ID

Mac Mini (late 2012), Motorola Arris Surfboard SB6141 GB Modem, Linksys N750 (EA3500) Dual Band Wireless N router, USB SuperDrive, Magic Trackpad, 1TB LaCie Rugged External HD.

    Cheers!! John

I must express my fondness for Mavericks!

I haven't posted here in a while since my issue was resolved by deleting and re-adding WiFi under Network Preferences.
Happy to report that after upgrading to 10.10.3 everything is still OK.
BTW, for those of you who have made Yosemite work, but aren't happy with the performance check your memory.
Yosemite seems to use quite a bit more memory than Mavericks. My mid 2012 MBP was fine under Mavericks
but was never snappy under Yosemite even when WiFi became fixed. It used to have 4GB. Now it has 16GB.
Yes, you can add 16GB to a mid 2012 MBP. Now it is snappy again. Only a little over $100 from Crucial via Amazon.
I think Apple could do a better job validating the hardware config before pushing you to upgrade. 4GB is not enough
    for Yosemite.

Well with 8GB in my rMBP 2012 running 10.10.3, not only have I had to power cycle my WiFi 7 times this morning, now the Macbook is "freezing" once per day, screen then goes blank and it shuts itself off. When I switch the Mac back on the login screen blurred wallpaper is the default even though I don't use the default on my desktop once logged in.

The AM and PM symbols in the menubar frequently instead display AN or PN.

Using Bluetooth immediately prevents WiFi working at all.

The top half of this rMBP is brand new too - that includes the battery. Hardware test results state nothing faulty.

Never had a single problem ever with Mountain Lion on this mac, nor Mavericks. All these issues started with Yosemite. I can revert to Mavericks and all issues disappear. I have also tried reverting to Mountain Lion and all issues disappeared too.

Yosemite is still a step backwards; a long way back.

I'd prefer to see a retina version of Snow Leopard.

Now for another go at posting this - the WiFi died again when I initially tried.

(previously i could not select my 5ghz network, only the 2.4ghz on the same apple router).

how can you solve this problem?

Since Apple's 10.10.3 Supplemental update my WiFi is fine.

WiFi went from needing to be power cycled every 5 to 10 minutes to being faultless for the last 5 hours of operation.

Still can't use Bluetooth and WiFi together though but I could in Mavericks.

Apple isn't it about time to offer Mavericks as a download? You have to admit, this is becoming unprofessional.

    Sadly I have to agree.

The media bangs on about how great Tim Cook is leading Apple and all, but by 2010 MBP was solid as rock and yet my late 2013 rMBP 13" has been plagued with software bugs right out of the box starting from the trackpad and keyboard lock-up issue that gapped every single late 2013 rMBP 13" released to banking security software sleep conflicts and now this charade.

Not at all impressed with Apple's software in years of late

I think what's needed is Apple to simply demonstrate some honesty in this matter, such as: "We've experienced some difficulty ensuring compatibility between Yosemite and some non-Apple routers and modems. Whilst we're making every effort to correct this, for the interim we offer Mavericks as a download from the Apple Store."

Surely this would ensure greatest customer satisfaction under current circumstances?

Isn't customer satisfaction Apple's and shareholders' highest priority?

I agree. I must add though it's happening with with my All apple ecosystem. Also, Apple Wi-Fi technical department has contacted me directly and retrieved detailed information. It's no a public acknowledgment but it is at least evidence they are taking it seriously. Apparently they responded to my posting here.

I doubt Apple will ever finally just own up to this publicly, they do not want another embarrassment after Maps and iOS8.

It is a real shame, it has made me disappointed and distrustful of them. A real shame. Self inflicted.

I've not been able to post any of my findings on the Apple seed variants for obvious reasons, however I now have the latest non seed version installed so I assume I can say what I like.

In simple terms mine is still broken and I can't have both a reliable WIFI connection and use bluetooth at the same time. Bit of an **** as I use my Macbook primarily on a desk plugged into a monitor.

    Here are the numbers

    Spec

    2015-04-20_13-16-29.jpg

Bluetooth switched off and connected to a BT Homehub 5 2.4Ghz home network.

    Bluetooth Off.jpg

Bluetooth switched on, connected to the same network with apple trackpad, apple keyboard and Bose Sounlink Mini connected on Bluetooth.

    Bluetooth On.jpg

I'm not going to try the 10.10.4 seed update as I'd like my computer back and to be honest suspect that this is a Broadwell hardware issue that won't be solved.

Yes, wouldn't it be nice to be able to use our Bluetooth Magic Mice again? What a novelty that would be.

    I miss mine.

Offer Mavericks please Apple; we've persisted long enough; Yosemite's undergone four updates now and WiFi is *still* dysfunctional.

Feel your pain, My Imac which was the best computer I ever had, until Mavericks started to loose compatability and forced to install yosemite, nothing but headaches and finally crashed, in the meantime I figured I get a macbook pro till i was ready for a new Imac. This mac book is just horrible. Slow isnt the word, I even got a Hotspot device from verizon,. When it works its great, but a 4g hotspot isnt helping like it should..

My question is why is it my problem. I spent the money and as far as Iam concerned have a lemmon. And from what I hear, Apple is not standing behind their product or any problems related to yosemite or what ever the real issue is..Who has time for these headaches after shelling out good money for bad.

I think they are sending all the good resources and techs over to Tesla

I think it may be time to replace every Iphone from the employees and family go Droid, and go back to PC, personnel and business...could use the write off's

Does ring a bell! Anything with the word 'well' at the end of it chipwise has been a nightmare for Apple. Haswell, Broadwell, Not-well. Your theory there wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.

Apple being at the forefront of technology does equate to a lot of 'guinea pigging' with tech. That's becoming clearer everyday since getting my late 2013 rMBP
