Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Can the cause of the wifi problem be hardware?

I just got tired and this is the first time I've tried all troubleshooting that i know or read but no luck. Anyway there's a first time for everything. So the wifi crawls that its not usable on both my iPhone and iPad but luckily i have parallel access remote app subscription so i just remotely connect to my Mac and do heavy internet stuff on the Mac. Not your ideal  solution but at least it works for me for now and seeing how long this has been going on, am not holding my breath for a solution anytime soon from . Good to know some have gotten a solution working for them thou.

empty case, and check settings, I had mine at Best buys where I bought my macbook from, now this location in south jersey I have had no luck with computers, PC or mac, I have my theory on it getting old stock or returns. Anyway Best Buys in Paramus I have bought 5 or so Computers with no issue, plug and play. Anyway I had their Geek squad go thru my Mac Pro, they had it for a week. When I got it back all th pop ups were gone but still had wifi fi issues. Finally I broke down and did extensive trouble shooting, I have found most of the settings needed changing . The biggest culprit for changing networks by itself, was order of wifi's used was not set, after giving them that info, something they ask for, also check the boxes that system admin is required for changes, and save it. Case was flooded, there is a good how too vid, just google it. And finally , in system pref under network assistant, had me connecting to an airport automatically, ewhicha neighbor has. Since these changes it has been fine. Until it decides to change settings again. Hope one of these help u out. Check experience of tech u bring it too. Just because they all where the same uniform hame a well recognized name ,doesn't mean they know *** THIER DOING!

That was what I was thinking, mine was starting up using different wifi in area at times, and even using the right wifi was taking forever to load if it loaded at all, I really suggest using diagnoses, thru system preferances and make sure your wifi is #1 in listed wifi's available, and make sure all boxes are checked on system admin must allow changes, and clear cache

Dump cache, make surveyor wifi is first on list, drag to top of list, and check all boxes require sys admin needed for any change, this helped my night a lot

This sounds like an issue with your WiFi signal itself (maybe your router) but not Yosemite. An issue with Yosemite would not affect the iPhone or iPad.

Thanks for response. I use my iMac and MBA as wifi hotspots. So I plug my usb modem then share that internet connection via my iMac or MBA to my iPhone and iPad at home. I've never had issues with slow wifi till i got unto Yosemite and have tried all from this thread and search on Google but the wifi is not usable at all on iPhone and iPad. Also connected a windows machine to see if it was the iPhone or iPad but got the same result. Also tried sharing my connection from iMac to MBA, same result and also doing the reverse of sharing from my MBA to iMac. Will be glad if it's not a Yosemite issue but so far, this has been going on since i got unto Yosemite.

There is another wifi/yosemity-issue that many people might not even be aware of. I should have 120 Mb (~15 MB), but whatever I do the download is ALWAYS capped at 5,0 MB. Not 5,1 or 5,3, but 5,0. That's on 5 GHz, on 2,4 GHz it's 2,5 MB. First I thought my provider was responsible, but they said it's a yosemity-related issue. For the moment I can live with that 5,0 MB.

It strikes me that people who report this issue all seem to have ± ⅓  of their capacity left. A friend has an old 10 Mb-subscription and has ALL the reported problems. He can't even email. Is my impression right that the problems seems less for people with large bandwidth, because they at least have something to work with? I have large bandwidth and DO have fluctuations, sluggishness, disconnections after wake from sleep and the reported 'download'-issue, but apparently it could have been a lot worse. 'Fortunately' there are still plenty of other issues with yosemity for me [off-topic, but in this case not really off-topic]:

    • Crashes, sudden restarts, kernel panics, freezes
    • Graphical artifacts on screen, temporarily disappearing when moving window over it.
    • Disappearing menubar-items.
    • Appstore-updates that do not update
    • Crashing launchd-services, e.g. softwareupdated and SystemUIserver.
    • Mail: disappearing content in smart-mailboxes.
    • Graphical scrolling-bug in itunes.
    • Audio/midi-device disconnected after wake from sleep.
    • RAM and cpu-usage sometimes go through the roof.
    • Probably forgetting some of the 'minor' issues.

We're 7 months into yosemity. It's an absolute scandal.

I cannot believe how many bugs Apple has released in the past 2 years. Jobs must be turning in his grave. I am so very frustrated with the WiFI issues that I am just about to jump out of the Apple ecosystem. I have a business to run and when web conferencing, I get disconnected MULTIPLE times and look like a moron with my clients. Apple, get this right soon because I understand I am not the only one who has had about enough of this bug, also its been around for close to a year with no resolution? really??????

Please get this fixed ASAP. I like Apple, but feel like I am being cornered into jumping ship, so PLEASE HELP!!

My macbook pro has been working fine, for quite a few months, after adding Airport Express to my network. Before this change was experiencing same problems as you and only got good high speed reliable connection at Apple Store. Looks like Yosemite has problems with some wireless routers; mine being a Belkin.

Im having this same problem since upgraded to Yosemite..frankly, Im getting sick n tired of this.

its NOT a problem related to my router or computer. I have an Imac and a MacBoock Pro, both running Yosemite 10.10.3 and both having the same issues after installing Yosemite.

I have other laptops running windows and none of them are having any issue..so Its not ME, its APPLE. So please, SOLVE IT!!.

Same case here...Im loosing money just because Apple dont let me conncect when I need to. Im considering leaving Apple too, because this is unnacceptable. They just broke my two computers, its as simple as that.
