Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Tom

it's been a stunning fail, made worse by stunning stonewalling

maybe now the geniuses at the genius bar will stop saying they haven't heard of any issues

I've had this nightmare of some mismatch between Yosemite and BT, (plus all the yahoo password hassles). Finally I decided the only way forward was to ditch BT. This week I start with a new supplier. My advice is leave BT now, because eventually, you will.

I've been having WiFi trouble off and on for a few months, but this entire week has been truly awful. Every 5 to 7 minutes I have to turn WiFi off and then back on again, since I'm getting zero throughput. In fact I had to turn it off and on multiple times just to post this comment!

I have been a Mac user since the days of System 7.5, and I cannot remember a problem this annoying and crippling to the OS.

I finally have a fix for the wifi issues... Unfortunately, Apple does not want anyone to know right now, so they are deleting post, I thought we have moved beyond censorship.

Anyway, Im happy that someone is listening to the customers, it only took a year to do it.

Yes I have been sensored a few times also. Since my issue is not resolved by the discoveryD removale I am starting to go through the old fixes to see if any of them work. The one that worked for me just before this last update no longer works. That was the manual ip on both routerand iMac. My business is suffering due to this. I was thinking of just buying a new iMac but Apples sensorship infuriated me and I have decided not to buy a new mac this time around. The iMac will get moved closer to the main router where itcan be wired and avoid the issue and just used as a NAS iTunes server for my variouse AppleTV's. I'll check up on the wifi issue on it after each update. But after the next full release I will no longer participate in the beta program since all my hundreds of reports in their report app don't afford me any slack from Apple and I continue to be treated like neusance to them. Good luck to everyone, I hope you all get some proper resolution even if a bit late. Thanks for all thereaf ideas and information to compare with. Youhave done more to help than Apple apparently has. Iasume that because they have not been fourthcomming with any news or updates on the issue.

For several days, I was unable to view this thread, I was getting "Content restricted, contact administrator" or something to that effect, after clicking on the discussion updates links in my e-mails (my account was not blocked, I could view other discussion threads just fine). Now it is working again. What is going on, Apple?

Yes that happens to me. The message you are getting is probably because you are clicking on the link in the email and it takes you to a censored comment. Possibly mine since I have had about three or four removed over the week end. If this happens click on your name at the top left and a menu pops down. Top of the menu click Manage Subscriptions. Then select the thread from there. Or look through your history for an earlier entry. It happens because their notification system for subscribed threads will immediately mail everyone unless there is an automatic removal or ban. I stopped getting notified of my comments being removed. I assume they flagged me and added some key words that would automatically put me on a moderate list. That way the subscribers were not receiving my inflammatory comments. Sometime when I get that message I log-in, then click on an old history link and and it will come up with a message saying joe95 (name is made up) is banned from commenting or something to that effect. I really thought that was going to happen to me. So much for freedom of speech; but I seem to have not been banned so that's something I guess. Actually for a bit I thought the message meant my browser was mistakenly connecting to the wrong account or something. But I think it's just telling us that message was removed and author banned.

    Hope this helps.

<vent> I am still hoping that 10.10.4 will finally fix the wifi issues on my mid-2012 MBP for good; I haven't dared to update since 10.10.1 since there always seemed to be quite a few people for whom each new release screwed up their wifi connection (for the first time since Yosemite came out, or even more than before.) And now comes OSX El Capitan...

Never again will I be an early adapter - Apple lost a fangirl with Yosemite, - so if 10.10.4 does work out, wifi-wise, I guess I will have to stick with it until, I don't know, forever. I'd much rather have the same OSX for a few years, with minor tweaks, as long as it doesn't make my MBP completely useless, than having to keep experimenting with a new one each year - or, like with El Capitan, after ten months?! Ugh. </vent>

Well this last public beta release also didn't help me. To make things worse something happened that is going to prevent any computer hardware replacements for some time, of any kind Apple or otherwise... Feel like crying really.

Ugh. I am sorry you're still struggling with Yosemite. I see they released the fifth 10.10.4 Beta yesterday; is that what's giving you grief, again?

My wifi connection is still icky, and really only works within no more than 20 feet of the router (it's really a toss-up beyond about 10 feet,) but at least works if I stay nearby (may as well have a desktop, I guess,) so I am completely weary of updating...

Yea the fifth released testerday. Your remedy is something I haven't tried. But it's not really easy and perminantly is not possible since my office is way down the back of the garden. My iMac, one of the AppleTV's, a small PC, raspberry pi 2 plus often my iphone and ipad and sometimes my kids and or partners ipad and iphone are all about 10 meters from the main extension router. Of all these my iMac seems to be the only device that has an issue. I've avoided the issue by adding an additional router near my iMac and ran an ethernet between that router and the iMac. Such an ugly mess that created. I'm still wondering if swapping out the wifi module would help. I wonder since my issue persists and seems to only ever show any hints of change with fix attempts that have a close connection with the hardware. Been very busy lately to have much time to shut my computer down and unbolt it from he wall and take it into the house to try it right near the main router. Not gone to the effort because both extended routers in range of the iMac result in the same outcome. Possibly the maine extension router is at fault in such a way only iMac shows the symptoms. Since you say yours works closer I think I will go to the effort tomorrow if I get a quet time.

Hi Do try this as it worked for me. please let others know if it works. Click System Preferences. Click on Energy Saver. Uncheck the box 'wake for network access' and restart your mac. This was one of the first fixes I tried and it has worked ever since apart from a single occasion. I was dropping connection almost every page before that after purchasing a new mac (2013). I'd never have bought it if I'd known. That's all I've done and it worked, thank goodness. Good luck.

First, change your DNS settings! I recommend Open DNS.

Second, if it happens periodically, restart your machine. I had the same problem when I kept my MacBook Air on 24/7. It would cause the wifi to slow to a halt if it was on for anytime over 5 days in a row (with sleep).

    Try restarting your router too.

Also, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE LATEST VERSION!!! Sometimes people overlook that there is an available software update that would fix the problem.

    Hope this helps!

Yes, this seems to have been my issue (that I could pinpoint) from the second I downgraded to Yosemite when it came out. If I move more than about 10 feet from the router (whichever router,) while the wifi symbol still shows full bars, the MCS index starts dropping dramatically until it reaches 0 and then I can't load a single website. I have tried all the fixes from the past six months, but nothing really ever changes. It's a pain in the backside.

I really hope yours works better, too, closer to your router.
