Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Yes always uptodate. I used to be a proponent for such activity. these days I'm leaning to staying with what works and stuff the new features.

Yea the energy settings thing gets tried often here since is quick and easy one to try after all the updates. Wake is generally off any way.

Ok... As said earlier I'll unhook everything and unbolt the iMac now. Not convinced it will work unless the issue is the main extension router which it could be I guess. So here goes. Also. the third router that the iMac is tethered to does the same thing if the iMac connects to it via WiFi and that lis about a meter away.

    Hi,

Seems like an awful lot of routers and router changing. You seem to have done enough Techie for a lifetime. This seems to me like it's pointing to your iMac's Broadcom card. Taking a wild guess here:

Have you tried using a USB Wireless G/N Dongle? Example: Linksys Router use a Linksys USB Dongle. Then you would turn off Wi-Fi in OS X. At least you would know that it's Yosemite related or hardware. The Dongle is relatively inexpensive considering what you've already gone through. Even though Yosemite ran good for me, I had my issues with it in the beginning on my Mac Mini (late 2012). I seriously had to wipe out everything and start on a clean slate with Yosemite. The Wi-Fi never was (and never wil be) 100%. I reverted back to Mavericks, but, I had to pay the piper. I had to do a secure erase, NPRAM Reset followed by an SMC Reset to irradicate all signs of Yosemite to Internet Recovery back to Mavericks. Anyway.

I hope the USB Dongle suggestion works -or- you have already gone that route. Broadcom boards do go bad, keep that in mind. Take care and hope you find the problem.  Cheers!!

    Oh!!

Don't know how far you are from an Apple Store. The "Genius Bar" should be able to give a free diagnostic. Although, I'm sure, their tests will show everthing okay.

Well, at least you smiled! Cheers!!

Roll up yer sleeves, Pilgrim! You might be changin' a Broadcom Board!

If you do replace it. Do a clean install of Yosemite, or, the OS X that was purchased with your iMac. Double Cheers!!

Hmm... I haven't tried a dongle yet. Non on hand; no I lie, I do have a tiny one stuck to my Raspberry Pie. That completely slipped my mind. Actually didn't occur to me; my thinking ran with replacing the card itself.

As for shifting to the house to be near the main router. I'm going to try again since I realised our internet was shaped as a result of all the updates and streaming  in the last couple of days. Lucky I don

't have a 16gb iPhone because my connection isn't lightning quick... Anyway. I didn't have a single wifi drop while the iMac was in the house. But it may not have been optimal to know because of the slower speeds and even just luck since I have the odd day where things are fine.

The weird thing is if this is my router or wifi card all this started just days after I installed the First Public Beta...

I live in rural Australia. The nearest city with any kind of Apple care is a two hour drive. It is an actual apple store though.

Somewhere, a thousand years ago in this thread I wrote my procedure for clean install of Yosemite. I think you've done some "bit building" in your upgrades with Yosemite. In other words, residual bits of old upgrades are not being reset and some old bits on the HDD are not completely overwritten. Now, some will argue this. I have been dealing with Operating Systems for over 24 years. Upgrades have never been 100% successful. Just ask Microsoft. why do you think they recommend a clean install?

Try performing clean install after you test the Dongle. If need be, I will transcribe the steps I personnally took on my Mac to "wipe it".

At work right now. I'll monitor. Cheers!!

Hi same issue here, closed to the router it is ok. Otherwise, wifi symbol shows full bars but the browsing experience is awful. Have to disable/enable wifi permanently. My mbp is nearly useless. I guess that if I go to an Apple store the wifi will working fine. I wonder if there is a way to record wifi status in order to come with some kind of evidence ?

Was that the convoluted reinstall you came with with in discussions with Apple? If so I recall it. I'm extremely reluctant to do any kind of wipe of my drives, even though I have two separate backups, onsite and off site. It's probably going to have to happen eventually. Will have to wait till I close my office for a break or something.

Haven't been able to find any OS X drivers for my Edimax dongle yet. It wasn't recognised automatically. So working on that for now.

****! I just dropped my iMac carrying it back to the office. It's ok by the looks of it.

The procedure I outlined, is, in fact, taken from all the Apple Knowledge Base documents I printed up for myself, tested and outlined for myself. Then when I thought my outlined instruction worked, I tested it for myself again. I was my hope that my outlined tutorial would help all to prevent the pages and pages of Apple Knowledge Base documents to be printed, read and studied. As convoluted as it may seem. The first thing to do before a reinstall is get a working, bootable Yosemite Install USB Thumbdrive. OR revert back to OS X that shipped with your Mac via Internet Recovery. No matter.

Yes, all the steps I performed are outlined across numerous documents in the Apple Knowledge Base.

The beauty of the Mac is, you have the Internet Recovery "failsafe". I was reluctant as well. Once I had all my personal data stored on readable removeable media, I was good. Take care. I'll keep a watch! Got to go for now. Cheers!!

Ok, when you have some time compile it into a PDF and I'll give it a shot when I have sufficient time as to not impact work. Thanks.

    osihara,

Can you please explain exactly what the wifi issue that you are having.   There are over 200 pages of responses to different issues.

I posted the fix that worked for me a couple of weeks ago, that came up after working with an Apple Wireless Senior Advisor and Engineers for over a month. But since there are so many people that have different issues, I do not know if this fix would help you with your issue.

The issue that I was having with my WiFi network is that I would have slow throughput when connecting to a router on the 5Ghz band with an 802.11ac connection.  My LAN is wired with all Cat 6 cables and gigabit hardware, and I have a 15Mb DSL connection, but the max throughput on 802.11ac was between 5 and 7Mbits whether it was to the web or locally to another computer.  As stated, I worked with Apple for over a month with a Senior Advisor and a couple of Engineers, and we were able to come up with a fix for my issue which to this day is still working.  I am now getting about 60 - 70MB throughput on my LAN, and the full 15Mbit download speed from the web.

Yea... I have a new ac Airport Time Capsule (bought late last year) as the main router in the house connected to the net via ADSL2+. That has brand new cat6 run out to the outer edge of the patio where it connects to an older 2.4ghz airport extreme. This is bridged and wirelessly makes up the remainder of the distance to my office. All device in the office run fine, except the iMac of course. Will just ad right here that I just found and installed the drivers for the EDIMAX dongle I bought for my RPi2 and with the third router now unplugged the driver software reports about 70% signal strength and the iMac has not had an issue yet. But as sort of mentioned above, I haven't had any issues today at all; so that might be luck. Our ISP account turns over tonight to I should have a better idea tomorrow.

The symptoms I get are; it works as expected until it stops dead in it's tracks. The Wi-Fi menu-bar extension indicates it's still connected and working but nothing will get access. This includes access to other devices on the network. It's devices loosing connection that tells me it's not working. As far as I have seen the menu-bar extension never indicated no connection to the router. I get this behaviour with the airport extreme (bridged) and the airport express that I have used to tether the iMac. That is to say if I connect to the airport express via Wi-Fi I get the same results unless I use an ethernet cable;e. The ethernet works as expected.

The consistency of the issue in terms of times between drops is extremely unpredictable. I can go a couple of days with no issue and the next day it can be every few minutes. The following day maybe a mixture of nothing for hours and then a few rapid drops and then a bit of stability and then more drops and so on.

Apple have been in touch with me and gathered data, so I was pleased when I heard DiscoveryD was back-burnered because I thought, as always and optimistically, it's was the light at the end of the tunnel; but not for me.

I have been offered another oldish Airport Time Capsule by my folks who don't need theirs anymore so I will give that a shot in place of the other as well. But again it's over 3 hours to get to their house, so that hasn't happened yet. I do feel more and more that in some way my wi-fi card was damaged by the first Public Beta... I have looked and nearly bought a replacement just to try a few times. Looking again. Will see how the dongle goes under full load tomorrow before I make such purchase.
