Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

This worked for me, on both at 2012 Mac Mini and a 2012 Macbook Pro 13". I've had over 24 hours of rock solid wifi:

MacDailyNews Take: This is not a new issue. It also happened with OS X Mavericks. We had this problem on one of our Macs running OS X Yosemite and fixed it the way we always have, by resetting the SMC (System Management Controller).

We don’t know precisely why this works, only that it has worked for us in multiple cases of wonky Wi-Fi with iMacs and MacBook Airs running OS X Mavericks and OS X Yosemite.

Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

Resetting the SMC on portables with built-in batteries:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
    3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
    4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
    5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it’s connected.
    3. Remove the battery.
    4. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    5. Release the power button.
    6. Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
    7. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Unplug the computer’s power cord.
    3. Wait fifteen seconds.
    4. Attach the computer’s power cord.
    5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

Note: Resetting the SMC does not reset, or otherwise change, the contents of PRAM, which is also known as NVRAM on Intel-based Macs.

My network has been fast and stable for hours now.

    I did the below.

    1)

    HD -> Library -> Preferences

    Rename "SystemConfiguration" to "SystemConfiguration.OLD"

    Restart

    2)

And then I change the country on my AirPort Extreme.

AirPort Utility -> Wireless -> Wireless Options -> Country

Changed from Austria to my country.

But my hunch is that it was more the restart of the AirPort than the country setting that helped.

I am not sure that it will work perfectly, but is a LOT better than before.

I just upgraded to Yosemite, and everything got slower. You would hope Apple would stop releasing glitchy updates and operating systems.

This worked perfect. Now to figure out WHY discoveryd is crapping out, and how to slay this beast permanently. The alternative is simply not using any Apple software.  It IS a little alarming that ONLY Apple software seems to be affected by this (iCloud, App Store, Safari), but everything else does perfectly fine resolving DNS hosts as usual.

Well, not 100% true. In my case, I was only using ping to www.google.com and, after ~20 seconds, my connection is lost. So, only apple apps are facing dns issues. The connection is really dying.

I have lost the network only once in the last few hours. This is not good, but it is leaps and bounds better than before. And it is a lot faster.

Mine was great two Springs ago, then dead until Mvrx, then it was intermittent at best. Just bought a dongle, one week old and now with Yoz it's on, stable and great so far. Although, the speed is only 130Mbps where it could be up to 217Mbps. But I now have WiFi in three separate partitions with OS installs: SLS, Mvrx, Yoz. So it does seem to be a software issue that is realized across the board in all installs. And is caused from one spot and infects all.

So far I am not impressed with a clean install of Yoz. Up from a Public Beta mishmash. Lots of holes. It's nothing like I have ever seen in a clean install. Will probably go back to Mvrx to Yoz upgrade. that install was far better.

Day 4 after changes as per my post. Everything Is Running Perfectly!  Did you try what I suggested?  Every problem I had was rectified after I tossed the plists in my Home/User/Library/Preferences folder and did a reboot.  I don't know if the PRAM really accomplished anything, but it only takes a minute to do.I highly recommend you look there for problems. If it is invisible do the ~/Library thing and it will be visible.

I am having bad problems with dropped wifi. I am very unhappy with Apple because of this issue. Will try wiping the plists, I guess.

Ignore your system library, it's fine, the plists to toss are in your Home Library. This is what my Home plists looked after I downloaded Yosemite.

This is how it looked after deleting and rebooting

Everything is working well since then. Of course you'll have to reset your personal prefs in the apps, but it's

worth the effort and it will relieve the aggravation.

Hi everyone, in my case everything star when I turn on my Macbook Air and I notice it was really slow, I did a lot of things to find problem, and when I check the storage my memory was completely full by the "other" category. This problem happens in two different macbook in the first one I solve the problem downloading two programs, one with the name CleanMyMac and the second one disk inventory X. This programs help me to find files there are not visible. I start the process in one macbook first and I found some weird file with the name "core" and that file was duplicated by himself and the 80% of my memory was full of that file. With this two programs working at the same time I erase avery single file with this name. This solve my issue in the first macbook pro. But in the macbook air I try to download the disk inventory X but when I tried to use safari didn't work. The macbook air appear connect but the internet is not working at all. I open the app store but doesn't work either, I thought it was the router but the internet work in the previous macbook pro and work fine in every other devices. I restart the macbook air, I went in the safe mode but nothing work. If any of you have a solution I'm going to be very happy.

    thanks
