Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

I have two Macs - one is a 2012 Mac Mini and the other is a 2009 iMac.  Both on Yosemite.  My router is a Linksys EA4500.  They cannot join either the 2.4GHz or the 5GHz network (in the case of the Mini) if I have said network set to "N-only" mode.  Both of them can connect to the 2.4GHz in auto mode, but they both connect at 802.11g with a link speed of 54.  The Mini can connect to the 5GHz network but it connects in 802.11a mode, again with a 54mbit link speed.

My iPhone 5s and 2013 iPad Mini (retina) both have issues with my 5GHz network on iOS 8 so I had to rejoin them the 2.4GHz one.  I've been tempted to buy an Airport Extreme, but now I see it's a software issue that so many people are having so I won't be spending money any time soon.

Same issues, updated to 10.10 on 2010 21.5 iMac - I use a Polycom internet business phone for work, and it is impossible to have a stable connection for the phone!

On my early 15" retina MacBook Pro, updating to Yosemite completely broke WiFi- it never worked even after trying all of the "fixes" found in the various forms. The updating of my 2010 MacPro & 2011 iMac by installing over 10.9.5 worked fine for both the WiFi and internet.

If I wipe the disk & do a fresh install on my MacBook Pro using the default install values, the WiFi works fine. As soon as I either migrate my 10.9.5 or try an install over- the WiFi is broken.

Its always the same- strong WiFi signal, gets IP address, but never connects with the  DSN.

I have filed a report at the Apple Developer Bug reporter & they have responded with a request for more info. Hopefully they can quickly track down the problem.

This was a long-running issue with some MacBook Pro Retinas (2012), and it was never addressed. I am having the same issue now with Yosemite. This article compiled all of the "fixes" from forums, and when I applied all of them, it seemed to do the trick. I do not know if it will work for Yosemite, but I am going to give it a shot:

What do you do when any of Apple products start to lag, malfunction or perform badly? You solve problems in the "Apple way": by purchasing another product/device/accessory from them!!! In my case i had to purchase an USB Ethernet Adapter and totally give up on WiFi so i could at least keep doing my work.

People should remember that this exact same problem also happened with Mavericks initial versions and Apple took almost a year before fixing it.

And people used to say that Microsoft did not test their products... :-S

    Hey there,

I have a similar problem. After updating to Yosemite my wifi goes down approximately once every two minutes (I use a Macbook Pro 15”, about six months old). Neither my wifi at work or at home work.

I work with online marketing / content marketing and I depend on a reliable wifi connection so this is very frustrating indeed.

By the way, I had to write this post in Pages, then copy and paste the text into the reply box because when I wrote my original reply I lost the connection and the message was lost.

I am, and have always been an Apple fan (I have an iPhone, Macbook, Imac you name it) and I really like Yosemite but this is so unprofessional and after the last issue with IOS 8 I am starting to wonder what is going on at Apple at the moment.

I hope they will resolve this issue very soon.

    BR,

    Bob

Apple definitely need to investigate and fix this

I see 5Ghz connections drop speed, even though there are no other devices in that band

I see 2.4Ghz SSID's drop out periodically (use Wifi Explorer app and you'll see this)

Yosemite Wireless is definitely broken, I am unsure if it's because of the bits they've added for Continuity, or if there are conflicts with bluetooth

Either way this is not good, and should have been picked up and fixed in Beta

WiFi connection keeps dropping and then the system can't find it, resolution is to turn on and off wifi and it works for a couple of minutes...

At home I am using the following configuration:

    - Frequency: 2412

    - Band: 2GHz B/G/N

    - Security: WPA2 PSK TKIP

and it works without problems. At the office we have Auth: Radius, EAP: PEAP and MSCHAPV2 and it keeps disconnecting every 20 seconds (worked fine on maverics). Any ideas?

Has Apple at least acknowledged they know there is a problem and are going to fix it? Cause if they haven't **** you Apple...get in line and fix this. Now.

Same issue here.  Every time I wake up my MBP I have a wifi connection but no internet.  I then have to turn off the wifi and turn it back on and it works for a little while.  At this point I'm done with Apple.  Putting all my Apples on Ebay.

FWIW, I spoke with an Apple Support tech a couple of hours ago. When I explained the issue, her initial response was that a router reboot usually resolved the problem. I then referred her to the discussions on this site (and MacRumors), indicating that the router reboot has no effect, and she asked me to wait while she checked with a senior advisor.

When she returned to the call, she said that Apple is aware of the problem, and is working on a fix. Although she said we might expect a revision to Yosemite, she could/would not provide an estimate of the timing of its release.

OK, I have a solution via one of these threads that FINALLY worked for me.  Everything is up, including Safari, and speeds are great.  I have a Macbook Pro with Retina Display and I'm connecting to a public network at my workplace:

    1.  Go to system preferences

    2.  Go to network

    3.  Hit the little cog icon

    4.  Choose "set service order" and move wifi to the top.

    5.  Press Apply

I forget if I restarted.  If you don't see a quick improvement, do that.

    Bingo!
