Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

After installing the Yosemite the wifi drops suddenly and unless and until i switch off and switch on the wifi, it wouldn't reconnect automatically. On top of this the blue tooth connection is worst. Now my magic mouse wouldn't connect to my mac though I deleted the device and tried to search again, but the mouse wouldn't show up in the list.

Have been a Mac user for over 10years and its more frustrating to see such issues happening on a Mac. Shouldn't everything "Just works"

Not sure for how long to wait for my mouse to get connected

I've been monitoring this thread for a few days.

    I have tried everything suggested:

    Reset PRAM

    Reset SMC

    Delete System Preferences

    Rename WiFi.....

    ........

My issue got better after I got rid of DropBox, but this was not the solution.

I would always lose connectivity while performing a Time Machine Backup.

    --------

I read GiveACrap's post and decided to wipe the PLIST files under my user profile and reboot.

Since then, my WiFi has not dropped while performing a backup.

    ---------

I cannot say this is "The Fix" as I have to give it time, but I can say this is the one change I have made that has allowed me to stay connected while backing up.  The change is significant enough for me to endorse this step as a "MUST TRY".

One thing that should be mentioned id that you do get the first time logon tutorial you got after you upgraded: Log into iCloud, etc.

Don't panic when you see this - all your data is intact.

    Thank You, GiveACrap!

    Instructions:

Finder ==> Go To Folder "~/Library"

    Look for PREFERENCES subFolder

Delete every file with the .PLIST extension

    Reboot

Ironically I had to type this whole thing out again because I hit reply and didn't have wifi connection so I lost everything I wrote. Woo

Same issues. I am a college kid with a Mid 2012 Pro and my roommate has a 2013 Pro. We both did the Yosemite update at the same time. His was fine and mine was not. Wifi drops every 30 seconds but reconnects instantly when I hit the icon and select my wifi. I have tried everything people have suggested. I added this site to my favorites on day one of the update and have checked every day to see what I could try next. So far nothing has worked long term.

However, I can see what Apple was trying to do. I was reading about the update on my iPhone while my computer was updating. They were saying that the new update would offer native support for popular video websites, like Netflix, so you could have longer playback time. I can watch Netflix and YouTube just fine. The wifi would let me watch videos while it buffered, but as soon as it was done the wifi would quit. I can surf the web just fine but only if I am constantly scrolling on sites like Reddit or Facebook or if I am constantly clicking links to keep the wifi loading stuff. But as soon as a site is loaded, the wifi quits but I can reconnect it instantly with two clicks. It gets really old really fast doing that every 30 seconds. Some of my college classes have online quizzes that require steady connection because they are timed and only attemptable once. I am unable to do these quizzes on my laptop since I installed Yosemite.

Bottom line, I just think Apple was trying to be more efficient but there is a gap in the software that kicks some off but not others. I'm going to keep trying new suggestions to try and fix it. This is on Apple and I hope they fix this soon because it is really inconvenient.

I have had the same issue.  I have a MacBook Pro Retina (early 2013).  One thing that I have just changed that appears to be working is to do the following steps:

    (1) go into network preferences

    (2) Select Wi-Fi on the left side

    (3) Click on advanced

    (4) Click on proxies

    (5) Unselect all proxies (mine was set to auto proxy)

    (5) Click ok

    (6) Click on apply

I was loosing my connection every 30 seconds and would have to turn off Wi-Fi and then turn it back on in order to have internet connectivity.  After turning off the proxy setting, my connection has been up now for four days with no issues.

EUREKA! IT WORKS! 3 hrs without a dropped wifi. Speeds are good.

Ok, I've been trolling this forum for 3 days trying to figure this out. I have a Mac Mini 2012, and ever since the upgrade to Yosemite from Mavericks, my Wifi would drop all signal every 1-3 minutes, and immediately reconnect when I selected my wifi network again. I couldn't stop bluetooth because it's the only way I can have a keyboard/mouse with my mini, so that possible solution (turning off bluetooth) was off the table.

Things I tried to fix this (you can read through the thread to see specifics on each of these steps) Of course rebooted the computer after nearly every one of these steps:

    1. Reset SMC/PRAM. Still didn't work

    2. Deleted system config folder. Still didn't work.

    3. Reordered the wifi network to have wifi both above and below bluetooth (based on 2 different posts which recommended different things, ultimately left it above). Still didn't work.

    4. Deleted all the wifi options, then joined my wifi network, re-entering the password. Still didn't work.

    5. System Preferences -> sharing. Stopped all sharing. Still didn't work.

    6. Utilities -> Keychain Access -> First Aid repair. Still didn't work.

    7. Utilities -> Keychain Access -> Double-clicked my wifi network under system and for access control made it accept from all applications. Still didn't work.

    ** Now the magic step.

    8. When I was on the phone with Apple care, they had suggested power-cycling my router (unplug it for a few minutes, plug it back in). I argued against it as my iPhone's wifi was fine, my Macbook Air was fine, and all of the other networked devices in my home were connecting to the internet fine. If the problem was so clearly with this one computer from upgrading to Yosemite, what was the point of power-cycling the router. Well there I was in my TV room watching TV, and the router was just a few feet away, so I power-cycled it. 2 hrs later I go upstairs and I'm surprised that the wifi is showing full bars on my monitor for my mac mini, and it's not losing connection. Now 3 hrs later, it hasn't dropped.

So I don't know which one of these steps was the magic step, but somehow the power-cycling of the router enabled some reset of the connection. So try it.

THINGS I DIDN'T DO, BUT OTHER PEOPLE HAVE (mainly because I'm not technologically that savvy and I didn't want to screw anything up): Mess with kernels, run scripts, use random apps created by other people from the interwebs (I'm paranoid about hackers/viruses), delete .plists (worried I'd cause irreparable harm somehow).

At some point I *might* try to roll some of the changes back (re-enable sharing, re-limit the access to the wifinetwork through keychain) to try see if progress reverses and if I can isolate the issue, but for now I'm leaving everything as is and enjoying getting my computer back.

I had the same problems you had, the wifi dropped every 30 seconds or less. I did all of the above suggestions, I read all the comunnity messages ALL

And finally get it working, I call to the internet provider and change the router (Arris) wich I tested changing channel, key and name rebooting etc. For a new Cisco, ever since no wifi drop.

Maybe the problems are with a specific configuration or router brand and obviosly Yosemite.

    I hope it helps.

My friend and I updated at the same time.  After the update, his computer worked nicely, while mine was dropping wifi after a few minutes.  It is a problem I have had for the last week.  Today, I logged into my admin account and went through the iCloud Drive set up before it went to the desktop.  When I set up the update Mac last week, I clicked yes for iCloud Drive set up.  Today, on my admin account, I clicked no.  When it finished logging on, I had great connectivity.  So, after this, I went back to my usual account and disabled iCloud Drive.  Now I have connectivity.  As soon as I yelped in glee, my friend said he never clicked yes for iCloud Drive.  His has been working since updating.

Redman480 I think I'm in love. You have restored my faith in humanity (except for those Apple coders, they can go .............themselves). After trying every (yes EVERY) tip here you have saved the day. Now Apple people, heed this young persons words and go fix the issue.

I have tried everything mentioned in these various posts and nothing seems to work. The only way I can get a stable wi-fi now is to have Network Diagnostics open continuously as soon as I close this the signal drops every 5-6 minutes.

I have the same problem on 5.0 GHz Wi-Fi Network, dropping out every couple of minutes, but at the moment seems stable on 2.4GHz. I have tried every suggestion that I can find online but none have worked. I am currently speaking to Apple care who claim to not know of any such issues. Seriously??!!!!

    (Macbook pro retina, late 2012)

I update from 10.9.5, failed because of WIFI drop and not able to initiate setup wizard, and reinstall 10.10 with merged back user data. After that I don't have major issue with WIFI at home and at school.

My case here is when I travel to a different county yesterday and being a guest with my host, the WIFI drop happen again. It is so annoying and I am so afraid that the nightmare of WIFI drop comes back again. Tried almost everything in the thread and nothing works. Today I bring my mac to a coffee shop with their free WIFI and it works without any issue. Here is my small input:

    • This issue might related to different wireless router and configuration.
    • Or, just related to the WIFI encryption.

I tried redman480's suggestion (switching off iCloud Drive) and it didn't work at all. I've tried everything else as well (I think there's been about 20 suggestions so far.. none of them work for me).

I have been experiencing this problem (Macbook not connecting to Wifi), ever since the public beta of Yosemite.  I tried to focus all of my feedback reporting on the problem, hoping Apple would create a fix, but as we can see that never happened.

Restarting my macbook twice or three times helps serve as a remedy, though that is very annoying and time intensive.  I am not having the interference of bluetooth with wifi however.
