Oct 26, 2014 10:08 AM in response to tomstephens89by cephalopodix,So I shelled out a vast amount of money for my very first Macbook on Wednesday and received it on Thursday. I was expecting it to come with Yosemite, but it came with Mavericks. I foolishly updated to Yosemite and since then the wifi hasn't worked. Given everything in this thread, should I just return the laptop and ask them to send me another one running Mavericks?

Oct 26, 2014 10:20 AM in response to macelangeloby Lexiepex,It is reported as a possible solution.
But most of us upgraded over Mavericks as the quickest, and found no issue.

Oct 26, 2014 10:23 AM in response to cephalopodixby Lexiepex,Your mac was delivered with Mavericks, so it is easy to revert to Mavericks.

You can download Mavericks from the appstore (again, it will stay in there).

Oct 26, 2014 10:29 AM in response to Lexiepexby cephalopodix,Thanks so much for the quick reply. But I didn't set up Time Machine (only had the machine for three days and all my data is backed up on an external anyway), so I don't think this is possible for me

Oct 26, 2014 10:33 AM in response to macelangeloby macelangelo,i spoke too soon. A clean install DOES NOT fix the problem. I did a clean install last night, and although it worked last night and this morning first thing, when I tried to get on the laptop at noon - three hours later - I had no network connection and my connection to the 5ghz network was dropping constantly.
2.4 giz sort of works for now.
At this point I'm rolling back to Mavericks -

Oct 26, 2014 10:38 AM in response to macelangeloby Lexiepex,Again, as said before to you, your 1 person result is not specific. It helped some people. But by coincidence probably.
Stop being so specific, you make yourself ridiculous.

Oct 26, 2014 10:58 AM in response to Lexiepexby OceanDrifter,I have tried everything suggested in this thread. Nothing has worked for me.
As far as I am concerned the problems first started with an update of Mavericks about two months ago, and I was not alone.
Maverick Wi-Fi keeps dropping!
(note the similarity of the fixes)
I was hoping Yosemite might have resolved the problem. I am disappointed.
So, personally I don't think this is a Yosemite specific issue, although it may seem so if it first appeared upon your upgrade from Mavericks.
What I find strange is that when the WiFi drops it is impossible to reconnect without a restart (or repeated restarts). Why ?
The problem for me is also very router specific, and other computers running Windows or devices running iOS are unaffected on the same router.
So the problem seems solely related to Mavericks and now Yosemite OS on some routers.

Oct 26, 2014 11:29 AM in response to tomstephens89by Dondaan,When is the fix coming for this terrible issue? I have o bps of internet connection most of the times.
-
Oct 26, 2014 11:29 AM in response to OceanDrifterby Lexiepex,-- I do not want to critisize, but in general we always advise to solve issues before upgrading to a new OS.
-- A restart corrects all "fallen" bits.
-- Try this in your specific case:
Startup while holding the Shift key immediately when you hear the startup sound: this starts the Safe boot, slow and only basic OSX, start Safari. Same WiFi problems? If so, start a new thread (this is way too long to attract enough help), copy your above post, and explain what happened in the safe mode.

Oct 26, 2014 11:33 AM in response to tomstephens89by DRIVEPILOT,Had perfect WIFI connection in my studio where I primarily use my Macbook Pro. Upgraded to Yosemite, and amongst other problems, now I get terrible speeds on my wifi, can barely download anything at a 100kbps and even that will freeze the rest of my internet- whereas I can go upstairs and get 25mbps. It used to be nearly identical performance. Also, the connection will randomly drop, and sometimes the router cannot be found without cycling wifi on and off a few times.
Yosemite fixed the random rebooting/USB issue that I had on my MBPr with Mavericks, but now I'm stuck with this. Please apple, this is a productivity killer and a glaring problem.

Oct 26, 2014 11:40 AM in response to Lexiepexby OceanDrifter,Can take criticism, (no problem).
I joined in simply to indicate that the issue may predate Yosemite (Yosemite presumably borrows Mavericks' code) and that the numerous fixes suggested in this thread with 'it works', may be misleading and have been tried before, albeit on Mavericks.
I spent far to long trying to fix the issue in Mavericks and so I hoped for the update. Apple suggested disabling WiFi on the router and adding an Aiport Express. That did not solve the problem for that location/router. What is strange is that only my devices running Mavericks and now Yosemite have an issue.
So, I'm resigned to a cabled connection to one of the routers I use.
Can take more criticism :-)

Oct 26, 2014 11:51 AM in response to chotty1by itzvij,This issue is definitely because of the DNS handling of Yosemite. Because even if my internet in Yosemite never work, the internet in my parallels virtual machines work without any issues.

Oct 26, 2014 12:03 PM in response to itzvijby PJWilkin,DNS is a red-herring .. the issue is Wifi and the surrounding services (discoveryd) are broken
I have poor Wifi signal on boot, and cannot see my Time Capsule
Turning Wifi on and Off means my signal gets better, but I still cannot see my time capsule (via finder, or time machine)
restarting discoveryd daemon lets me see the time capsule (until the mac sleeps, then the issue starts again)
