Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

I'm having similar issues. Every few minutes my 15" MacBook Pro keeps losing the WiFi connection

I am genuinely happy for those who have solved this wifi problem, but I am the admin and I am lucky if i can get internet access for more than three minutes at a time. Sending an email is like watching a horse race, staring at the activity progress bar and shouting " Go baby go!" and praying the email will send before the Internet kicks off. More often than not it just ends up in the outbox.

Do you have a dual-mode network? If yes, can you test after you turn off the 5Ghz SSID on the network?

I upgraded my MacBook Air to Yosemite and WiFi issues began immediately.  No problems with Mavericks or the earlier OSes.  And, also upgraded iPhone 5S to IOS 8.1 and have major WiFi issues - spinning circle, not connecting al all, sometimes connecting, but then dropping out after only a minute or two.  I have a Verizon account and a Verizon-supplied router.  I have my iMac hard-wired to the router and have no problems getting onto (and staying on) the Internet.  I know the router's WiFi works because my MacBook Air and iPhone 5S do get onto the WiFi network - it's just a question of staying on.  This seems to be a classic case of if it ain't broken (Mavericks), why did you change it (Yosemite).  Somebody played with the WiFi code in Cupertino and messed up.  Looking for Yosemite 10.10.1 and IOS 8.1.1 real soon.

This workaround from vishvas_new_mac worked for me too.  I am having the same issue.  My administrator account connected just fine but my sons user account would not connect.  After giving my son admin rights the WiFi issues were solved.  This is not a good long term fix since doing this disables all parental controls.

MBPr Mid (2013) - Running in Clamshell mode.

My Problem : WIFI Drops when connecting Bluetooth Keyboard / Mouse.  No divices connected it seems ok.  but for clamshell, that's kind of difficult with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

In Frustration i've written a little script to run in the background which Is now on version 3,  but keeps me running with everything appearing to work ok and i don't have to worry about clicking / restarting anything the script does it all.  I offer no guarantees, and the script may change a little over the day  but it appears ok so far,  with having to automatically reset the wifi 3 times in just under an hour.

Edit the script and put your own router id in it  :-   YOURROUTERID=192.168.1.1

What it looks like running in a terminal :-

echo "Lost WIFI Connection, Big Bounce Try"

    ifconfig en0 down > /dev/null

    ifconfig en0 up > /dev/null

    sleep 4

    sleep 1

    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Apple80211.framework/Versions/Current/Resource s/airport  -s &> /dev/null

    done

    Steps

    • Step 1: Create shell script from above code.
      • use your favourite text editor, and save the file in your home directory ( wifi.sh )
    • Step 2: In Terminal chmod +x your shell script
      • chmod +x  ~/wifi.sh
    • Step 3: In Terminal, sudo run the script so it can call the ifconfig command to bounce the wifi.
      • sudo ~/wifi.sh

In our house we had 3 MacBooks and after upgrading to Yosemite two of them would loose WiFi connection after 2-3 minutes.

I went into my Cisco router settings and changed the network security from WPA2 Entreprise to WPA/WPA2 + TKIP/AES. Rebooted the router and now all our MacBooks do not loose WiFi connection anymore.

This is my experience - a router specific issue.

I really don't think this issue is exclusive to Yosemite, although it may seem so if if first appeared when you upgraded to Yosemite.

It started for me with a Mavericks upgrade about 2 months ago. I searched for a solution then and found similar discussions concerning Mavericks and WiFi on these fora

    Maverick Wi-Fi keeps dropping!

Apologies for repeating that as I posted it earlier.

None of the fixes suggested in this thread are a solution for me. I hoped an upgrade to Yosemite might be.

I wonder how many users this affects when you combine various OS ?

    Hi,

I also have the wifi problem too.

The problem occurs since the update of Yosemite and iOS on my devices...

    1x Mac Mini (Late 2012)

    1x MacBook Pro 13R (Late 2013)

    1x iPad Air

    2x iPhone 6

After restart of my WiFi-Router everything looks fine.

But after a few minutes the wifi on every device drops again...

I hope Apple will fix that problem as soon as possible.

I had seen this solution in the past, and thought about trying it.

But again we are trying to fix Apple's problem, and we don't know what other issues are going to be introduced by replacing a file with an older version.
