Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

I've Used CleanMyMac (along with appropriate updates per operating system)  A hundred times and along with Onyx... over the past 2 years with ABSOLUTELY NO Problems on the Cheapest MacBook Pro:  a 2012 Non Retina 2.3 Ghz..  (16GB Added a Year Later)

My System Runs Like a Greyhound... and I use very intensive Apps Every Day Like Adobe Creative Cloud 2014... Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro... etc.

People gotta understand that the postings here are a SMALL MINORITY of Mac Users... what 10 - 20 postings about CleanMyMac and other APPS out of Millions of Happy Macsters... I believe 90% of the problems posted are people tinkering around like I used to do and got Bit now they wanna Blame someone.

Blame Obama, he seems to handle it with ease.....

    Tom

    Just for your info

A few days ago I applied the Kext file suggested in this thread and this resolved the issue I have had for the last 2 months of WiFi dropping after a few minutes or seconds of connection. I see someone else on this thread has now reported similar. (I had tried all the other fixes suggested with no improvement in WiFI stability).

However, there now appear some other WiFi issues which may not have appeared so obvious because of the predominance of the WiFi drop outs I was experiencing, and which may explain some reports on this thread.

I have now noticed that if I close my laptop down and reopen it the WiFi will have turned off and it will not then turn on from the menu bar or system preferences>network>wifi. I need to restart the mac to be able to turn WiFi On. (NOTE putting the laptop to sleep from the Apple menu does not seem to interrupt WiFi). This is reproducible.

(I haven't had the inclination to try all the various fixes on this thread for the latter issue as it was the WiFi drop outs that were most problematic for me; I rarely close my laptop down without shutting it down first)

I now suspect that there are a few (different) bugs around WiFi that are hardware, OS and router specific and require a certain combination of those three to be manifest, and which are understandably, creating a groundswell of mixed experiences and frustrations that are appearing on this thread.

The "thelma & Louise" comparison does not appeal to me.

It would be the END of Apple if the customer had to take such precautions before any install.

If the steps in your post that are really required for a correct install they should be performed by the install script.

That being said, I followed your procedure but unfortunately it did not solve the problem.

Note that I did not do the periodic maintenance before the Maverick install.

The status: the wifi (g) connection drops after 10 seconds on a MacBook 2009.

The problem is does not occur on my iMac 2013.

Also, the MacBook operates without problem with a different (n) router.

Neverthelees, thanks for your good intentions!

I think your comment is non-productive and insulting.

Are you the Apple cover-up team?

Your problems are very similar to the ones I was experiencing, repeated drops that were a combination of machine and router (one machine, Macbook pro 15" early 2011 connecting to one make of router (BT Home Hub, models 2, 3 and 4). The Macbook had no problems with other routers. Other computers (Mac OS and Windows) had no problem with the BT Home Hub.

The difference between us is that the problems for me started with a Mavericks update and persisted when I installed Yosemite.

I installed the kext file in this thread and it cured the drop outs on the 2011 MacBook Pro

    https://sites.google.com/site/osxyosemitewififix/

You can see some background here (Apologies for repeating information I have already posted)

    http://brielle.sosdg.org/archives/542-Fixing-Wifi-Isses-On-Some-Macs-10.8.x-incl uding-10.8.4.html

    Maverick Wi-Fi keeps dropping!

I have had stable WiFi for 2 days now. I remain concerned that I installed a fix from an anonymous site. DYOR.

However, I now find there is another WiFi issue.

If I close the laptop and reopen it while it is running, I find the WiFi has turned off and will not turn on. Only a restart cures this.

In contrast, putting the laptop to sleep from the apple menu does not cause the wifi to turn off or drop.

I think this issue was also probably present among the drop outs, but I saw it as 'one and the same'. I have not tried to fix this problem as I rarely close my laptop without shutting it down as well. That doesn't excuse it though.

I think there is "a bit of a coming together" of lots of issues around WiFi in OS and hardware, that needs attention from Apple.

Can everyone that's having the problem of reduced bandwidth and slow internet please just do one test.

Test your speed with bluetooth on and then turn off your bluetooth and test it again.

I'm 100% certain my problem is related to bluetooth and it would be interesting to see if anyone else's is. I suspect it has something to do with the auto hotspot integration in IOS but not tested that yet.

I have had the wifi problems but have never had Bluetooth on. I think there may be multiple issues that are confusing the picture. Unfortunately, a lot of people on this thread are suggesting solutions without diagnosing which problem they are dealing with. We need concrete evidence of exactly which scenarios are causing the problems and, just as importantly, which do not.

    As per MacAwesome88

Go to system preferences network settings and make wi-fi inactive then delete the wi-fi service.  Reboot. Go back to system preferences and network settings and add the wi-fi service back and change it's name to something other than wi-fi. i.e.; Wi-Fi2 will do the trick.  Given that my MBP 17 would connect at home and not at work after updating to Yosemite, the afore mentioned did the trick.

Reading all these fantastic emails, popping about,  could we start having a little bit of conformity, about what you have and what you say is working / not working

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013)

         2.8 GHz Intel Core i7

         16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

         Wifi 2.4 GHZ

         Bluetooth Keyboard

         Bluetooth Mouse

         Failures :   WIFI

-- Stuttering WIFI Connection (drops but returns)  50 Times in 3 Hours

-- Lost WIFI Connection Total (wifi connection goes blank and requires manual connection)  20 Times in 3 Hours

         Failures : Bluetooth

              --  Mouse : Jumpy Movements.

--  Keyboard :  Unresponsive at times a few seconds at a time.

        Fixes Tried :

              SMC  Reset

              PRAM  Rest

              Leaving Airport Open

Delete WIFI Settings Reboot & Create New

Delete Bluetooth Settings Reboot & Create New

Allow Handoff Between MAC & iCloud  (Tried on & off )

              Reload discvoryd.plist.

              plist removal com.Apple.Bluetooth.plist from /Library/Preferences and/or ~/Library/Preferences

Still Unhappy,  automated batch script keeps me reconnecting when things drop.

I have read the thread and have the same problems. My question is: Is Apple doing anything about it? Did Apple comment on this issue and proposed a solution? Does anyone know?

Strangely enough the deleting of the Wifi network, then re-adding with a different name has worked for me now. I tried it once but I must have done something wrong because it wasn't working but now it is.

For f**k's sake, Apple! People are screaming all over Internet about the WiFi problems with Yosemite, and you are not even acknowledging that there is a problem. That if anything is dismissing of your customers! Come out of your closet and act like you're on top of things.

I'm trying to do WORK with this laptop and the WiFi drops all the time. It started the moment I upgraded to Yosemite. I know, stupid me, why did I upgrade in the first wave. Should've waited for a couple of weeks..

Jesus I'm frustrated.. Dear Apple, at least say that you're working on this.. That'd make the wait for a fix so much easier.

It´s sad to say... but, I don´t even remember Apple saying anything about a bug or error. Never. Apple never says anything about errors in their Software until they release a fix for it.

They never say: "We are working in a solution for this specific problem."

The only thing they ever say is: "We just released a new release of our OS with a lot of fixes: Here is the list: ... .... ... ... "

So, I think we won´t receive any word about it until they really release a fix for it.

And checking at Apple´s history, they´ll only release a fix one month after the original release. So, we´ll still have to wait for a few weeks.

Unfortunately, simply deleting the wifi and renaming it, as per macawesome, wasn't so awesome and didn't fix the problem.

Neither did ddid resetting the PRAM

    Neither did resetting the SMC

Neither did deleting the .plist files

Neither has any of the other items suggested. Sometimes after playing with the system it appears to be stable, I've had 3-4 hours of solid connection, but sadly the problem starts back up again and the wifi keeps randomly dropping out.

I'm not on twitter but if enough people on here who really know what they are talking about would tweet about all the faults on Yosemite, then Apple might have no alternative but to admit to what is happening.

AND THEN DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
