Q: OSX Yosemite Wifi issues

Hi there,

I upgraded my Macbook Pro Retina 15" (mid 2014 revision) to OS X Yosemite last night and am now having issues when using my home WiFi connection. Whilst it connects to either the 5Ghz or 2.4Ghz network, it is basically unusable. Web pages take minutes to load (if they even load at all), dropbox doesn't sync because it can't get a connection and even trying to get to the router config page is extremely slow and hit/miss.

Tethering to my iPhone seems to work ok, as does using my home network via wired ethernet.

Are any others having problems with Yosemite? Wifi was working fine on Mavericks.

Tom

I also have A MAJOR change in my wifi connection ever since i downloaded Yosemite. Normally my wifi speed runs at 30 Mbps now it runs at 5 Mbps. Im trying to fix it, but nothing seems to work.. I am loosing faith in Apple products and I am seriously considering changing company. Every new download they bring out weather its IOS8 or Yosemite or whatever new update they release, it keeps getting worst. I'm impatiently waiting for them to take responsibility for this and fix it.

After two weeks of working with Apple support, sending them packet traces from a diagnostics program called Capture Data and running multiple tests, my main contact called me yesterday to let me know that Apple engineering is aware that there is an issue with WiFi and Bluetooth in the latest OS release (Yosemite 10.10), that they are working on solutions (he used plural) and that they will be released "soon" as an update (maybe 10.10.1 will include a partial fix and more fixes later?).

He also said that, unfortunately, they don't have a workaround for me at this point, that they appreciate my patience and help with this matter, yadda, yadda.

In other words, there is a problem...there is nothing you can do about it because it's a software problem (proposed solutions in this thread are temporary)...they are aware of it...they are working on fixing it and they're going to release the fix "soon". When I said it was a bummer I had to wait another two weeks I got the sense from his tone, although he didn't say anything specific, that it may be earlier than that.

I'm not part of the Mac developer program so I don't have access to the recent Beta that was released, which includes fixes to WiFi.

As I posted elsewhere, I'm able to consistently reproduce interference problems between WiFi and Bluetooth while using the 802.11n 2.4 Ghz band. If you reconfigure your WiFi access point/router to use the 5 GHz band you will get less interference from Bluetooth, although it seems like other issues with power saving may still affect WiFi connections when the laptop is not plugged in.

I would like to stay on a positive side believing that Apple will eventually eliminate all WiFi issues crated by or during the Yosemite install. I'm wondering; why Apple so frequently affects WiFi functionality? During my personal, brief experience with Windows and information of experiences provided by many Window users, some of them from this forum, none of them were experiencing similar WiFi problems on their machines. I would never return to Windows because Apple OSX system superiority to any version of Windows, however when loosing functionality of a core operating future as WiFi make me wonder why Apple doesn't realize that without a fully operational WiFi our computers, especially portable are crippled and in many cases useless. So, now many of us have to wait patiently weeks if not months with hope that Apple will correct something which should be fully operational from the beginning. I know that I contributed to my misery by pushing the button, however on another hand shouldn't I have a trust and full confidence in a company I have been supporting for so long?

Having the same problem where Wifi connection drops every few minutes. Was not an issue before I upgraded to Yosemite. Turned off blutooth, tried diagnostics (option click on wifi icon). Tried creating new location. Thinking of downgrading with my timemachine backup.

all i I can say is I am sooooo happy I didn't update!!!!! I'm usually on board from day one, but ive thought Mavericks was already glitchy, so I hesitated. I've had more performance issues with Mavericks then any other OS, and figured it had to do with no more Mr. Jobs.....  . Maybe standards are slipping, I hate to say. Been a Mac user since '07-not as long as many of u, but still a long time and am really bummed to see how this has been handled. I'll keep my eye on this thread before I take the plunge.

I received an update a couple of days ago to 'Pages'.     Wifi seems OK now although I am reluctant to say this.   I did do a system reset as well about a week or so ago.   Fingers x-ed

    I have only one statement:

    APPLE PATCH THIS, NOW !

Occasionally a capslock is useful after all.

    HI...

I have been on Yosemite with Network Issues since a month. Done numerous of own as well as suggested fixes. All of which have been working for a foreseeable time only. Yesterday, morning I tried another (Don't know whether this has been suggested or not) but it has put my Yosemite into another gear where sleeping the computer won't even interfere with Network after wake. Nor would I loose Network while doing heavy Dropbox syncing. Latter had almost always caused a network drop.

The Network (WLAN) I had been using was generated by an Airport Extreme which had been configured 6 months ago as I was still running Maverick.

I decided to reset the Airport Extreme to its factory default settings. So that is what I did. It was the only thing I had not attempted in dealing with the network issues.

After being reset, I entered my WLAN along with Password and set it to operate @ 5GHZ only (To eliminate Bluetooth Interference).

After that, everything just seemed to work. Sleep, deep sleep, streaming, syncing, iPhone 6 Plus sitting next to rMBP, Girlfriend talking on her phone, etc.

This has probably been suggested but this thread is too big to read thru' - so I thought I'd post is here. If I encounter the issue again, I'll report back and flag this as another temporary non-solution.

We, the users are able to influence those standards by coming here and posting and reading. Standards should rise with a future 10.11 ! As Yosemite has proven, beyond a doubt, that hitting the upgrade button the minute it arrives, is quite the dangerous thing to do. So people will think twice (or three times) before upgrading next time.

If a company strives to, as fast as possible, move the majority of its user base to the new version of its operating system - it should be employing  immaculate quality-control before releasing such an upgrade. And forums as these provide excellent statistics for such endeavours.

I tried this, along with all the other suggestions I found and nothing seems to be working. So frustrating

Yeah, disabled Handoff first and this seemed to help a bit. Handoff wasn't working on my homenetwork anyway (2.5 and 5G), at the office it did. Now I have reset the SMC and turned Handoff on again. Works now in my home network and Wifi seems stable. Fingers crossed... (tried a few other solutions before like dumping some plists but that didn't seem to to the trick). Am I a bit of a bigmouth if I say that Apple should address this problem a bit more actively?

The 10.10.1 Beta did not solve the problem. I'm always cannot connect to my 5GHz wireless connection on my MBP but I can on 2.4 GHz.

No problem for my MBA where both 5GHz and 2.4GHz worked perfectly.

    Strange!!!!!!

    cnour78,

I believe that you are violating your NDA by publicly discussing Pre-Release software. I could be wrong but that would be the first NDA which allows public discussion of beta software !

    Just saying....

Yes, this is very true MortenJamesCarlsen....however, not possessing the level of expertise that many of the users have here, my contribution is limited to sending error reports that are generated by the system. It's a foreign language to many of us, and while I've picked up a lot over the years, I'm definitely not experienced enough to articulate exactly what the issue is.....other than "****, this thing is slooooooow!"

However, your post helped me to realize I need to at least post a "THANK YOU" to all of you who can articulate the issues to Apple. So....THANK YOU TO ALL THE SAAVY PEOPLE OUT THERE! (no sarcasm at all....i really am grateful)

I will say that I have been so spoiled over the years with my Apple products and how they "just work", but I am not as enchanted as I once was......:( I hope they turn it around soon....that said, I can say with 100% certainly, that I will never return to a windows environment...EVER.
