MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) freeze with Yosemite

After installing the OS X Yosemite my MBP Retina starts freezing due to graphic problems. The only option is to restart the Mac

How to find the problem and solve it?

Have a heart Level 6 CT. I agree its not true to the subject but it is somewhat related. And people are humans, not robots.

The lack of relevance in some of the posts is less of an issue than Apples tight-lipped response to people having trouble and becoming frustrated. My steer? Lets spend our time lobbying Apple and collaborating rather than exercising our Forum OCD on what represents a poor match for posting.

(CT, before you ask, there are some people in other forums that actually like me! And I don't mean no harm here either. :-) )

had same problems like most of you. my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Early 2013) always get stuck, specially when i try to play a game like wow.

then had to restart 2-3 times to get it work again. i tried clean install etc. but nothing helped. talked to apple but had no more warranty .... they wanted 500 Euro for logic board replacement.

somebody in this thread said that he opened his mac, cleaned it and replaced the cooling paste. i tried it on my own. i opened the mac and it was so dirty, really really dirty and the pasted was like dry. i cleaned it and replaced the paste. now the mac is working for 3 days and no problem. before i was not able able to play world of warcraft for 10 min ... now i can play for hours and no problem. its like new !

hope could help somebody and sorry for bad english ....

You saved my day. When I went to Apple, they suggested to replace the mainboard, in fact it's just a matter of dry thermal paste !!!

Mine would crash more and more until no boot possible (from once per week to more times per day). I thought my nvidia chip was burnt and now after thermal paste replacement : magic.

Since my first boot after thermal paste replacement I could start a music in itunes, put the animation on, play with gfxcardstatus (switched more times between the 2 cards), attach a thunderbolt display (while itunes animation playing)

Hello, everybody!

Today i've got my laptop (MBP late2013,nvidia 750) from Apple repair with the new mainboard.

First thing is i tried to freeze it usual way by switching between cards (enable/disable Automatic graphics switching). And i could not!

I tried several hundred times. Before repair i always could to hang it their.

Hello to everyone who thinks that this is only software problem.

I'll write here if something changes.

Jan 13, 2015 6:45 PM in response to TLFonseca

Hello

I have a Mid 2012 Retina MacBook Pro too, and also upgraded it to Yosemite.

I met same problems ( sudden freeze, black screen, etc), and had to do hard reset. Recently it is getting more frequent, several times one day.

Now I tried to lock it to integrated graphic card or NVIDIA G650M by gfxstatus, and it seems worked.

I'm not sure if it is software problem or a hardware problem, and I will take this to apple store for a diagnose.

but if so many people met same problem with same Mid 2012 retina macbook and with same Yosemite, it looks like a software problem or a low-level software driver problem. ( when using 10.9 Mavericks, I didn't meet so many crashes and freezes. maybe only twice per year ).

so please apple check this issue and make a fix if possible.

I post the error log here that I met yesterday:

Hello, everyone.

Less than a week passed since i changed mainboard on my MBP late 2013. I try periodically to hang it. And today it was success. I could hang it several times by switching between discrete and internal cards (all is freeze, only mouse cursor is moving). I noticed 1 thing that this is can be happened only when temperature of the laptop is high. (Temp above top buttons).

I don't know what to do. I can change mainboards every week. But is it make any sense? Or may be change MBP to one with one card only. I don't know.

And now i agree that this is software problem. Or almost all of the mainboards are defective.

Anyone has success try to change driver to Mac Pro, as somebody wrote above?

My MBP Retina Mid 2012 has this issue... I think it is an hardware related problem, because I noticed it with Lion too (red orizontal lines working, and gray display on boot).

Now, with Yosemite, the display hangs on, sometimes the mouse still move, and if, for example, I am in a skype call or using a music player, I still hear (and talk on skype).

Frequently it appens opening Photoshop; other times, if I have Firefox (with a lot of tabs opened) and other software developing tools...

Nothing from Apple?!? There are a lot of discussions on this problem....

We have to produce without loosing our work!!
