Q: MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) freeze with Yosemite

After installing the OS X Yosemite my MBP Retina starts freezing due to graphic problems. The only option is to restart the Mac

How to find the problem and solve it?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Going to the website www.gilt.com , to browse/shop, brings up the graphics issue BIG TIME on my RMBP.

Come on APPLE, time to get a patch out or new update for Yosemite and the Graphics Issue ASAP !

For everyone still reporting freezing issues when mouse is the only thing that moves (not flickering, messed up images, faulty media displaying etc).

Have you tried PRAM and SMC Reset and update to Yosemite 10.10.1? I did reset and installed this update two weeks ago (I am developer, so I had beta version) and I haven't had a single crash ever since. Not sure what helped the most but I am safe to say that it does work.

For those having distorted images and other media on websites:

This thread is not relevant to your problems. Yes, it does involve GPU but it has nothing to do with GPU switching. Maybe it is at some level but it the problems looks completely different, so you should look up other threads for help.

Viesis, great to hear 10.10.1 fixes the freezing.  I can confirm at this point, after a week or so of forcing integrated graphics only, that the problem is definitely related to the discrete GPU and/or the switching to and from it.  As for the graphics distortion/artifacts, I can also confirm that it continues to happen even when forced on integrated graphics.  Visual glitches I can live with.  Regular, consistent instability I can not accept.  Looking forward to 10.10.1 (hopefully SOON) and hoping and expecting it will fix both of these issues.  (I'm also experiencing serious wifi issues on certain enterprise networks since 10.10.  That better be fixed too!)

    Dansmacbook,

Did you try PRAM and SMC reset too?

Luckily I never had problems with distortion/artifacts though, so maybe I had a "lighter" issue.

I have my MBP on discrete -- which is a NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1025MB -- for two or three weeks and so far no hanging.  So if it's also been on the Integrated graphics setting too, with you, and also with no problems it has to be something to do with the switching between the two cards.

1 week today with the GPU switch disabled and I've had zero freezes or crashes. Unfortunately the battery life is really short, too short!

Download GFXcard status and lock it to integrated card mate.
also, I have ticked "reduce transparency" and using dark mode. I doesnt freeze anymore even I dont lock it to any graphics card. Try and tell me the result.

I frequently need to attach an external monitor so I cannot use the integrated card only.

    Hi!

I had the same issue. Freezing, scary gfx - failures,.... Anytime I tried to use my external projector these problems occurred.

I tried everything I could possibly think of (Reboot, PRAM Reset, Use only one gfx - card, etc...).

The simple solution: Switching "off" the translucency in the accessibility section.

Everything works fine now. And I even allowed the automatic switching of gfx - cards. Still stable.

But to be clear: I want a system that just works. I do not want to work hard to get my rMBP (2012) ready to use. I could by windows if I wanted to...

    Apple fix this!

Become a regular occurrence... mostly on Chrome with graphics switching, crash reports all submitted.

No mention of graphics switching fix in the release notes.  Bummer!  I have a big presentation tomorrow and I'm not going to install a new OS revision before that.  So any reports from others willing to dive right in would be great!

--Does OSX 10.10.1 fix the problem? -- A big fat NO!  :-(    At least in my case -- I was hopeful for about two hours but then the computer froze while I was away from the screen.

Locking the graphics card helped me so I'm doing that again now.
