Q: MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) freeze with Yosemite

After installing the OS X Yosemite my MBP Retina starts freezing due to graphic problems. The only option is to restart the Mac

How to find the problem and solve it?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

I have the same problems. My Macbook crashes when switching from iGPU to the GT650m and sometimes I have strange artefacts like in the post above.

Macbook Pro Retina 15" Mid 2012

It can be fixed through disabling the automatic switching to the iGPU, but it shortens the battery time.

So it just happened again. I got this file sysiagnose_date.tar.gz. It seems there is too much private information stored in it to upload it. However I also would not know where to upload it.

All of these three reports have a long tail. I could send it to your E-Mail. I think it would just be too long for the forum.

It happened while surfing with Safari.

I hope Apple resolves this asap. I am experiencing this same exact issue on a macbook pro retina mid 2012 with 10.10.1. I am seeing every symptom mentioned thus far from sudden freeze (except for mouse) and having to shut down the machine cold to fuzzy looking images like the so many attached to this thread. Freeze happens at least once a day. Fuzzy screen will happen on sites with video and javascript like yahoo, cnn, youtube and soon after playing any of the videos - not before. Sometime I would hear the macbook pro make a chirp like noise at it freezes even when audio wasn't playing prior to the lock.

Bro, just click on "reduce transparency" in accessibility settings. I have no freezes since I've done it.

    Hi AdrianFK

Could you provide me your emailadress, so I can send you credentials of my ftp server where you can upload these files...

    Looking forward to your reply.

+1 here with all the funny symptoms described in this thread: mid-2012 rMBP freezing all GUI access when Safari comes across fancy jQuery stuff.

I also had the impression that LittleSnitch contributed to crashes in the background, and have now disabled it.

Just to be sure: Romanist10 do you suggest reducing transparency in addition to turning off graphics switching in Energy Saver?

No, I don't. Just reduce. As I said, not a single freeze. I have installed Gfxcardstatus(just to know which one is working) so I see that my mac switches cards often at "heavy" web sites but no freezing. Try it out and post your results here.

Freeze happens to me when showing video content on cnn.com using Chrome. MBP 15-inch Mid-2012

    • Intel HD Graphics 4000
    • NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 512MB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.3GHz configuration) or NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M with 1GB of GDDR5 memory (15-inch 2.6GHz configuration) and automatic graphics switching

Apple, you have a problem either introduced or aggravated by Yosemite, and it needs to be fixed ASAP. People are losing work.

    Hello everyone!

I was experiencing some hangs overall, in addition to some odd graphic behaviors (only in safari) in one tab or another, since updated to Yosemite.

Now after updating to 10.10.1 the freezes began on my MBP Retina 15.4 Early 2013.

Hoping for a fix from Apple soon... It's getting complicated to work like that!

My Macbook Pro Retina Mid-2012 is experiencing hangs and hard crashes and just today started with graphics corruption (mine is black and white and effects only part of the screen.)  IIRC I started having problems with an update just before Yosemite.  In two years previous I don't remember more than one or two crashes and since Yosemite it has been happening a least every other day.  Occasionally since Yosemite my macbook has been able to recover enough to recognize there has been a Graphics Error and send a message to Apple.  I tried turning off Transparency in Accessibility earlier this evening and still saw graphics corruption.  My wife's early 2008 Macbook Pro went splat with some kind of drive corruption three weeks ago and after many hours I was finally able to put that back together. She is running Yosemite without any problems.  Our bullet proof MacBooks pros have been uncharacteristically giving us grief in the last month. Hoping for a solution to the graphics issue.

This is an example of what I'm seeing in Safari on a mid-2014 Retina 15" with discrete graphics. This is after a PRAM reset and file permission repair.

    Hi all,

    for update :

    - mine is a aMBP mid-2012 15"

    - I'm now on 10.10.1

    - I did several times fixing SMC + PRAM + disk + permissions

    - I kept the "reduce transparency" option activated in "accessibility"

    - I didn't keep the "switch" option in the power settings

although, I have a "quite" stable solution (definitely not stable as macbook air should be)

    - I have apparently two types of crashes that occur :

    >> "small" crash : then, I have the big black screen of death "a problem occured, type any key to reboot", then the reboot occurs properly and I get this

    *** Panic Report ***

    panic(cpu 4 caller 0xffffff7fa6377f63): "GPU Panic: [<None>] 5 0 a0 d9 9 8 0 3 : NVRM[0/1:0:0]: Read Error 0x00000100: CFG 0xffffffff 0xffffffff 0xffffffff, BAR0 0x104000000 0xffffff8213400000 0x0e7150a2, D0, P1/4\n"@/SourceCache/AppleGraphicsControl/AppleGraphicsControl-3.7.21/src/Apple MuxControl/kext/GPUPanic.cpp:127

    >> "BIG" crash : in such case, happening (I think) more when I connect an external screen on thunderbolt port, I sometimes can't get the macbook booting, and have to do several SMC reset / PRAM / boot fails / SMC / PRAM.... gray screen / boot crash / failsafe mode (keeping "shift" while apple shows up).

I'm very fed up with these and will again call apple care to ask for a REAL solution...
