Q: MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) freeze with Yosemite

I'm picking up my 2013 MBPr later today after the motherboard swap (and whatever else they did to it.)  I'll report back on whether it's any better.  In the interim I have been using mo old, trusty, 2011 MBP 17" all decked out with aftermarket SSD, 16GB RAM, 1.5TB HDD in the OD space, etc.  I noticed that it too had some odd video glitches.  No show stoppers.  No crashes, but I guess the best way to describe it is just little abnormalities that made me say to myself, "hmmm, Yosemite graphics drivers must not be very good."  I still think that ultimately this is a hardware issue that is exacerbated by poor software drivers.  If it were ONLY a hardware issue, I don't think it would cut across so many hardware lines.  But if it were ONLY a software issue, then 1) more people would be on this thread screaming, and 2) seems Apple would have issued a fix in 10.10.1.  I mean, they're one of the world's biggest companies.  They have the resources to write code when necessary.  If it were that simple, I think they'd have done it if it affected everyone.  But it doesn't seem to affect everyone...so bad/suspect hardware must be a factor.

I dunno...that's what it seems like to me!

I'll let you all know if my fixed MBPr is better.

@teamcrisis were you able to verify from the logs that it was the same kind of crash hanging on the Intel  GPU?

@stefpac no I wasn't able to verify they are the same thing. There are many similarities, but there was no GPU hang log.

Got my logic board replaced, will update the thread reporting whether I will experience new crashes. Also, if you bring your laptop in for repairs, make sure to show them the syslog files reporting the failure to restart the Intel cards, so that there's no confusion about what the problem is.

Well, after doing all of the trouble shooting steps I was crash free for about 10 days and then I had another one today. The screen flashed amber around 4pm. At first I thought it was flux related and then it froze with the mouse still working. I've removed flux and I'll be running gfxCardStatus to turn off graphics switching when I'm doing serious work on the machine. I'm in touch with Apple. They have requested more logs. So, let's hope this issue is fixed in the next update. Obviously some people might actually have bad logic boards, but it's most likely a driver issue of some sort.

same here. 10.10.1 on Retina mid 2012, screen messed (same as @helloworlde) or freeze as others do. this is really crazy bug

I'm seeing this exact same issue.  Early 2013 MBP.  Called Apple, said it was hardware.  Ordered a brand new MBP -- got everything re-installed.....  EXACT same issue.  Latest version of Yosemite on both.  It's not hardware unless my brand new MBP has the exact same issue as the Early 2013 model.

This needs to be addressed by apple very soon!

Other than disabling auto graphics switching -- does anyone have any additional fixes/work-arounds??

I had a client presentation using a projector with an HDMI connection. Everything was running great until the display went to sleep, on wake-up, the projector went green and required I unplug the HDMI cable and plugged it back in. The HDMI port didn't re-initialize while the projector kept looking for a signal. Restarted my rMBP, the graphics error popped up on restart (...great...). Plugged the projector back in and it showed green again, guessed it had to do with the graphics card not initializing properly. Completely shut down and restarted, no errors, plugged the projector in, everything worked great as long as I didn't let the display go to sleep.

I really hope this is a software issue as I can't run a business without it to get the logic board replaced. Definitely doesn't look good in front of my clients during design presentations either.

I have MBPro Late 2014, 16GB, 512 GB, Nvidia GT750M

I Have the same problems when switching between cards. For testing i Use Photoshop (when it starts, it use GT750)

What helps: restart MBP in safe mode and reboot. The problem is gone until start using the external monitor(TV) by HDMI for a while.

I used my mac several months before i started using the HDMI port and never had a problem with switching. And now i try to switch several tens time and have no problem until i'll use HDMI. In my opinion it's some mix of HDMI using and sleep/awake mode problem, cause the first time i had this bug after i shut the top of the laptop ant it didn't go to sleep.

I have a 2012 Retina Macbook Pro and I really can't believe that Apple still hasn't solved this issue considering, this is a really expensive machine. My Mac since I updated it to Yosemite has been constantly freezing randomly, mainly while watching videos. Also some graphics sometimes fail and thing do not look well.

I have a doubt if I take my computer to an Apple Store, how can I show the problem if it only fails sometimes? Second thing is, if they offer a new logic board, will they charge me for that for being out of warranty?

That would be unacceptable.

I have been pretty disappointed with apple, as a Mac user for years, with iPhone, iPod, iPad, Mac, iCloud etc. And I really expected more.

@frookt I have the same specs as you. I've experienced the same issue with and without an external monitor using HDMI. Disabling the graphic switching help for 2-3 weeks. Didn't have any issue.

Now in the past few days, I'm having the issue again even though graphic switching is off. I've experienced the issue once with no HDMI and twice with it.

I'm reasonably certain this is a Nvidia driver issue. I haven't yet installed the app people are recommending in order to force the on-board graphics to be used, but I think doing so prevents me from using the HDMI with 4K, no?

I'm using gfxCardStatus. But you can only use Nvidia all the time (it's copy of setting "Don't switch between cards").
It's impossible to use onboard card only, cause some applications need it and gfxCardStatus can't prevent using it.

You must pick Intel in gfxCardStatus when there's no app using the Nvidia. Then whenever you run some app that requires Nvidia, it won't switch.

Just a quick update.  Got the MBPr back from Apple on Saturday afternoon.  So far no issues.  I haven't really taxed it too hard yet, but no issues so far.  Fingers crossed...

I am also experiencing this problem on my rMBP 2012.

However, I've also noticed that, as of 10.10.1, my rMBP is no longer using the integrated graphics.  I've checked that "automatic graphics switching" is enabled, I've reset both the SMC and the PRAM, and no matter what I'm doing, my rMBP always seems to be using the discreet graphics card, even when I've just booted the computer and haven't yet opened a program.

I also checked in Activity Monitor to see if any running applications were requiring the "High Performance Graphics", and none of them do.  So I'm not sure why my rMBP is choosing not to use the integrated graphics anymore...

I know it was switching between them in Mavericks, and I'm almost positive it was switching correctly with 10.10 (although 10.10 was when I started seeing the various other graphic artifacts and freezing issues discussed in this thread).  It seems like, with the 10.10.1 update, something has changed that no longer allows my computer to use the integrated HD4000 Intel graphics.
