Q: MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) freeze with Yosemite

After installing the OS X Yosemite my MBP Retina starts freezing due to graphic problems. The only option is to restart the Mac

How to find the problem and solve it?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

    I absolutely agree with you,man!

When i was at genius bar and tried to make crash on Mavericks(on Yosemite i freezed it), there was sometimes a little freezes for 2 seconds. Remind you, i enabled/disabled checkmark Automatic Graphic Switcher. I think that small freeze is the thing that is processed like crash in Yosemite.

So, this is combination of some HW defect and bad code.

Having the same problem here; Macbook Pro Retina 15-inch, Mid 2012 2.3Ghz.  Kernel panics and reboots, with blank screen, sometimes 4/5 times per day. I went to the Apple Store and The Genius offered me the substitution of the logic board because of a faulty GPU, with a cost of almost 500€ (easily a quarter of the total computer value) and I rejected arguing the computer was just two months after the warranty expiration date and the similarity with all the cases of kernel panics and reboots in the same model of computer that are shown, for example, on here. The Genius talked to me about a 6 month after warranty expiration date "courtesy" and after talking to a supervisor, they offered me a 25% discount in the reparation, which I was not satisfied with.

They told me about writing to Apple Feedback and also Apple Care to report all this cases and try to achieve a Substitution Program.

Apple Care Senior Advisor was pleasant and he told me he was going to talk with the Apple Store technicians and a superior but he phoned me later saying he could not do anything and I would have to pay the reparation.

This is an example of a kernel panic log:

Can anyone confirm whether the latest developer beta solves this problem? I was reading the comments on Macrumours and some posters were saying that this issue is solved under the new beta released yesterday, I believe. For most users this is absolutely a software issue. Pretty obvious. Everyone had a working machine before a software update. Right? Right. Good. Of course some users may also have bad logic boards. But this is going to be exceptional. Besides, Apple has to do something for people under Apple Care. What can they do except swap out logic boards with a board until the update is released?

Just to keep this thread on track, I'd like to remind everybody that the original scope of discussion for this thread was specific to the situation where the screen freezes and the only thing you can do is move the mouse pointer.  Furthermore you will have an "Intel GPU Hang Summary" reported by that exact name in your Console.

I am just hoping that when we report that step X resolves a problem, that we remain focused on the problem we are trying to solve.  We are specifically focused on the "Intel GPU Hang Summary" / frozen screen / mouse pointer still movable issue here.  Other problems probably warrant a new thread.

Yes, this is exactly my problem.

Macbook Pro Retina Mid-2014 (the newest for this days) with Intel Iris Pro AND nVidia GT750m, 16GB of ram, 512GB SSD HDD and 2.5Ghz i7.

No loaded aftermarket kext's (only this from apple).

For real? Are you on a 2012 rMBP? If they don't fix it I'll just go back to Mavericks. I've learned my lesson updating with these flakey releases.

I logged a bug and provided sysdiagnose output. It was closed this morning as a duplicate of 18323051. (Of course I can't access 18323051 to see progress.)

Anyway, I suppose that's as good a confirmation of any that Apple is aware of the defect and is working on a fix.

If anyone can access bug 18323051 and can provide commentary about what's in there that'd be great.

Just chiming in - same problem here!  I experience it a lot when photoshop is active.  Extremely frustrating since never experienced the issue with Mavericks.  Good to see I am not the only one!

So -- I decided to put my pentalobe screwdriver to some good use and removed the back cover.  All I can say is "HOLY COW!"  The thing looked like a pig sty inside!  I spend all this time cleaning my screen and the exterior, thinking I am babying it, only to find mounds of dust inside clogging the heat sinks and the fans.  Mind you I work in a clean office environment too!

I used a can of compressed error and carefully removed all the dust.  Ran my "Click graphics switching on/off" test 450 times... no hangs yet!

This can't be source of basic problem. My mid-2014 is less than 30 days old (10 battery cycles).

Waiting for replacement unit next week - we will see if another new macbook will do the job (solve this problem - i hope!).

Yah -- it's probably wishful thinking... I'll update if it hangs again!  Good luck to you too though!

    Thanks, wish You too.

I'm completely disappointed of buying 3000$+ macbook (in poland) and having this kind of problems

I need platform stable as rock - this was one of reason to use Visual Studio and windows INSIDE parallels in OS X...

Interesting... I use mine for the exact same reason.  I wonder if Parallels is related?  Anyhow I'll keep that in the back of my mind!

No, I don't think so. Parallels in my configuration cause to use only nVidia card (full graphic acceleration). I use sometimes macbook without parallels powered on with Photoshop only, or working on VS via RDP.

Switching between graphic cause problem - when using only one graphic card (example with parallels) system is stable as rock. When switching (example: opening Photoshop or sth similar) - random freeze...
