Mar 25, 2015 3:40 AM in response to JWDemonby ecotecit,Definitely software related.
Report Data:

Intel GPU Hang Summary
version 1.0.0
===========================================================================
-- Summary of Status for ALL Rings --
MAIN Ring is hung in a batch buffer <-- ROOT CAUSE!
MEDIA Ring is idle
BLT Ring is idle
Looks like it's the Intel card, and the batch buffer that's causing the problem.

Mar 25, 2015 6:30 AM in response to ecotecitby peetbarker,Mine has been away for 2 weeks and today I got an email from the technician:
Your MacBook Pro was received and checked in the workshop.
Unfortunately your machine's Logic Board is not covered for warranty replacement under the extended replacement program as the machine consistently passed Apple Service Toolkit's Video System Test which ran a comprehensive set of tests to determine eligibility.
Your computer is not eligible for this repair extension program because it passes these tests.
We did confirm the intermittent fault with your machine's Logic Board and we would recommend pursuing a European Consumer Law claim to have replacement of the Logic Board covered under warranty.
You will need to fill in the Customer Details and Customer Acknowledgement sections of form attached to this email and you will need to provided Proof of Purchase for your machine.
So, rather strangely it isn't covered under the replacement program, but they are going to claim on UK consumer law for it.
They've also identified a dead 'bug' (yes, an insect) trapped in the display and will be claiming for a new display, as it is supposed to be a sealed unit, so the bug must have been there a very long time!

Mar 26, 2015 1:42 AM in response to peetbarkerby EmilUSA,I have a short question regarding this issue.
If you change your display resolution from default to scaled "looks like 1080x1050" (one option to the right, beside default) and afterwards toggle the automated graphics switch button in the energy saver settings, does this also make your whole display flicker black for a wink?
I am able to reproduce this issue on two Mid 2014 MBPrs. If you toggle the switch extensively, on both machines the whole screen freezes (only cursor can be moved) until forced restart. Apple replaced the main logic board – without any improvement.
Here you find an old video of the problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jFvbc6kzyFs
Many thanks!
PS: If you stick with the default / native resolution, nothing flickers on both machines.

Mar 26, 2015 2:53 AM in response to JWDemonby AndyXL,Hi, I've been reading through hundreds of posts in this thread!
I'm now confused whether I need to take my Mac to a store to get repaired, or just wait for the 10.10.3 update.
I have a mid 2012 Macbook Pro Retina (so once of the machines which qualifies for an update).
I get the graphics problem, where my Mac frequently freezes when using Safari, and I have to force switch it off and then back on. This happens about twice daily.
I just tried the test whereby I toggled the graphics setting in the Energy Save mode, and it crashed my computer after about 3 toggles!
The crash sometimes happens when I use pages too.
Even if 10.10.3 fixes the problem, would you advice to get the Mac repaired (my computer doesn't exhibit any of the video problems which Apple mention makes your computer qualified for a repair).
Thanks for any help :-)

Mar 26, 2015 3:53 AM in response to TLFonsecaby Jimaroid,I'm now running 10.10.3, build 14D113c, which is the latest developer preview and I've just had two identical hangs in the space of an hour. Exactly the same symptoms I've always had with Yosemite (and reported earlier in this thread) when graphics switching is enabled.
No diagnostic info in the log, no GPU hang reports. Nothing. Just a complete freeze and reboot as usual.
I've disabled graphics switching again now. Infuriating...

Mar 26, 2015 6:15 AM in response to TLFonsecaby mariusa,I have been on the beta 10.10.3 since the release (about 1 month ++ ). No problems at all.! Graphics switching turned on, no freezes or hangs.
Even with "dumb test" like clicking on an off graphics card switching, no freeze occurs. All these post with "download CUDA", or like monitoring things dont work. Just get in the beta program or wait to the final release og 10.10.3. No more problems.
There is nothing wrong with your mac, and a repair of your mac will not do anything, (like all the people that got their mac repaired).
The repair program is actually not for this spesific problem (freeze "just mouse pointer respons", auto reboot), the program is for MacBooks that the graphics card makes distortions, like ripple effects on screen and makes it impossible to anything (even not the mouse pointer works)..

Mar 26, 2015 9:28 AM in response to ecotecitby Symanski,A couple of observations.
Firstly, I think one problem may be that with the crashing the cache in Safari may be getting corrupted, and that further creates other crashes. So best to clear the cache. Switch on the "Develop" menu option by going to Safari -> Preferences -> Advanced and at the bottom ticking "Show Develop menu in menu bar". Then, Develop -> Empty Caches. If you use other browsers then probably best to do similar.
Secondly, if you look at the activity monitor's Memory option you may see the WindowServer using up GB of memory, not MB. I read somewhere this was to do with how the windows are presented by Yosemite. Last time it was up to 30GB of memory, so it's obviously leaking somewhere. I killed the task, which effectively logged me out and I had to log back in, but now it's using just under 500MB. That does seem more reasonable!
I'd imagine that if the Intel video driver is leaking and it's trying to switch over to the Nvidia one, those memory leaks would create problems.
Also keep an eye on the memory use by Safari and restart it if it starts to grow.

Mar 31, 2015 7:33 PM in response to TLFonsecaby rogerfromsouth,I'm also running into the same problem. Apple please fix this issue.

Apr 1, 2015 7:32 AM in response to rogerfromsouthby eepgmik2,I just got a new 15" MBP and had the same issue several times in the same day as described here. I have subsequently turned off transparency in the Accessibility settings and have not experienced the hang since. I've been switching between battery power (no external monitor) to connecting to my Elgato dock with external monitor. I saw the crash logs for the GPU switching failing and have submitted it to Apple bug reporting. I'm using Yosemite 10.10.2
Therefore, I can confirm that the transparency workaround works and still allows the auto-switching of GPU when connecting a monitor.
Let's hope that Apple finally fixes it in 10.10.3 but according to the post above it doesn't look like it has...

Apr 2, 2015 11:13 AM in response to brianjswby Gregg_B,New board does not fix the problem. I had, and still have, the same issue. The computer would just freeze, and then restart, when I simply navigated to a website. The mouse pointer would stop in the middle of the screen and after about 20 or 30 seconds the system would restart on its own, or just shutdown. I went to see a so called "genius" and they run some tests but they all passed. I explained to them that running some hardware tests will not detect the problem, not when they run them for 10 minutes, or even an hour. In the end they agreed and actually replaced the logic board in my MacBook Pro late 2012 but a day after I picked it up the system would crash all over again, and the same thing happened. The mouse pointer froze, the keyboard didn't work anymore, and the system just died and power itself down. So don't count a new logic board will fix the issue. It didn't in my case so probably it won't in yours. It looks like the issues is related to how the graphic chips switches between intel and nvidia. I can't of course say this is in fact a 100% true, but looks this way. Or, Yosemite is doing something dumb on the top of that. However, what I have seen so far is that this freezing and restarting (at least in my case) is happening when I run my mac on batteries. The inter chip is used to save the energy but when I navigated to a website that required more "graphical power", the nvidia chip would kick in, crashing the system. Again, I can't say this is always a case and everyone has this issue but it looks it's what causes crashes on my system. So in the end this is maybe a combination of things. What I have noticed also is that when the system crashes the log files are not being written. I see some of you do have them, strange, because I could not find anything between the time the system crashed, and time I restarted it. It has to be so severe all I/O operations also froze. This computer is a disaster, and as far as I'm concerned Apply should re-purchased them back from all customers. The testing was not performed correctly/extensively. It's a lemon product in my opinion, and all Apple wants from us is to feed them with more money to cover for their own mistakes. I agree with lots of you here that the computer this expensive should not crap out after just 2 years of usage? What is Apple thinking?
Can someone please sue Apple?

Apr 3, 2015 5:37 AM in response to Gregg_Bby filippo1982,Same freezings for me!
Sometimes during Safari surfing my MacBook Pro Retina 2012 freezes (Yosemite 10.10.2)!
Ones happened also during an image processing session with Digital Photo Professional 4.
I always use the automatic change of VGA setting.
