Q: MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012) freeze with Yosemite

After installing the OS X Yosemite my MBP Retina starts freezing due to graphic problems. The only option is to restart the Mac

How to find the problem and solve it?

MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

    As an update,

I was looking through Diagnostic Messages and I found ReportCrash with "com.apple.message.signature: hasplmd". I have had this message about every 10 seconds for almost 10 minutes just until it crashed. I found that "Hasplmd" has to do with dongles and I think this crash has to do with USB connection between my Logitech Ultra Think keyboard cover (for ipad 2,3,4) at the time. It was merely charging from the port as it have no data connection but the Hasplmd errors seem to have begun since when I plugged the USB.

Just wondering if any of you had anything connected to your rMBP when crash happened? May be there is a problem with Macbooks handling accessories and it may treat discreet graphic card as a "dongle"?

I doubt they could do much..Nor do I want to go through the time consuming and difficult experience again. I had to go through some hassle to get apple to fix the logic board. They said that my MBP was excluded from the approved serial number for the official extended warranty program because it was custom ordered.. I want to see what I could do on my own for now..

I would suspect that dongle, unplug it and see how things go for a few days. I've had no problems with anything plugged in to my USB ports.

Agreed. So far so good.  But no hint in any of the release verbage that this issue was addressed in the update.

On the other hand, I noticed some references to GPU stuff when I repaired permissions, and I don't recall seeing this before - so maybe something was indeed changed.

    I've also just installed 10.10.3.

It seems to have resolved the problem :-)

Before, if I toggled the graphics switching in the Energy Saver mode, it would crash the computer almost instantly. Just tried it now, and it didn't crash!

    Same here.
The problem seems to be solved. It's strange, if I plug power it switch to Nvidia, if I unplug, on Intel..

Photo app require Nvidia maybe, it seems that.

My story was short, when i found this post some months ago.

I disabled the WebGL on Safari, because that generate less switchs between GPU.
But often I had switch with particular software. Example CORD, and I was causing freezing...

Upgrade to 10.10.3 doesn't help much. It just freezes less often, than before.

10.10.3 also seems to have fixed my 15" rMBP from 2012 from the graphic card switching freeze. It switches between the hd4000 and nvidia gt 650m card without any issues now.

    Hi,

I have the Retina Macbook Pro Mid 2012 and I am experiencing the same issues. Compete freeze. Grey screen with some message like "something unexpected has happened... reboot your computer" or something like that. When I attempt to reboot however, the OS (Yosemite) white line gets half way along and then stops. The only way I have found to recover is to reinstall the OS from the Recovery disk!! This has occured twice in the last couple of weeks.

I took to the apple store and they want to see video evidence of this before they replace hardware.

    So Question:

Is there any way to force the crash as I would like to force recreate the problem under test conditions and not working on something critical?

My Mid 2012 15' MBP Retina keeps freezing for no consistent reason. I have not been able to determine what causes the problem but since I installed the first version of Yosemite (Beta) it freezes sometimes three times a day other times it does not freeze in a week but it makes me really unsure of when to use my mac because I may lose all the info. In my case computer completely freezes including the mouse and after some seconds the computer turns off.

I've tried everything including formatting the hard drive and reinstalling OS X with no results.

It's pretty frustrating for a machine this expensive to have this kind of problems and receive no kind of support from Apple, I even bought a Surface Pro 3 because I can't use the MBP to work anymore.

Does anyone have any ideas on wether is possible to fix this or not?

You might be having hardware issues. That happens sometimes. If that is true, you will need to get the laptop repaired.

I reinstalled the OS and that fixed MY freezing problems (mostly). It still freezes once in a few months, but then unfreezes.

You should read some of the extensive discussion in this thread. I had hardware repairs under an Apple recall (also cited in the thread) and installed 10.10.3.  My machine is stable but experiences occasional crashes, maybe once a week. The traffic on this thread has declined dramatically in the last several weeks; my guess is that many others have solved this problem one way or the other. Good luck

I've been reading the post and I will be taking my MBP to be checked with the Repair Extension Program this week, that thing is that most people that I read on this thread, said that they changed the logic board with no results.

So should I take it or is it pointless?

    Thanks

I did it but they changed out the NVDIA video board as well. But my repair was done as part of their official recall.

I am also sending it as part of the official recall. I hope they are able to solve the problem. Many here say they sent it but still are experiencing the issues
