Q: Bluetooth pairing and so handoff does not work

Hi!

First of all I have a Macbook Pro 15" Retina late 2013 (bought at in the first months of 2014) and and iPhone 5s.

rMBP has installed OS X Yosemite since yesterday and my iPhone iOS 8.0.2

Positiv checks:

- both devices support Bluetooth LE

- both devices are on the same wi-fi network

- rMBP support handoff and instant hotspot as displayed in system information screen

- rMBP could "out call" over facetime and my iPhone to anyone

- bluetooth is activated on both devices

- airdrop (for everyone) is activated on both devices

- handoff in settings -> general on rMBP ist actived

- handoff in settings -> generall -> handoff & ... ist activated on iPhone too

Problems:

- handoff does not work between my rMBP and iPhone

- in bluetooth settings both devices see each other, but they cannot connect to each other

if I try to connect bluetooth from rMBP to iPhone I get: network not available

if I try to connect bluetooth from iPhone to rMBP I get: connections failed

so what can I do to pair/connect them both to each other for these incredible handoff features I want to use?

things I tried out:

- switching airdrop on and off on both devices

- switching airdrop off and on on both devices

- switching bluetooth off and on on both devices

- clearing bluetooth device cach on rMBP and fresh select (pairing) in the settings

- multiple trys on my iPhone to connect with my rMBP

- resetting network settings on iPhone

- resetting all settings on iPhone

I run out of ideas .... can anybody help me please!

MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Great. It works for me too.

    1. Turn off Bluetooth
    2. rename or delete ./library/Prefenences/com.apple.Bluetooth.plist
    3. switch on Bluetooth

Somewhat similar experience. I can pair and connect and, presumably handoff, between iPad and MBP, but not with iPhone 5c (in a lovely green, LOL). All three devices were updated with new OS today. Logged in to same network, same iCloud ID. So where do I go from here, and why does iPad Mini (8.1) pair and not iPhone 5c (8.1).

Well handoff sort of seems to work between my iphone 5 and my MacBook Pro running Yosemite. When I start using a compatible app on my iphone the corresponding app on my mac pops up an icon with a small iphone image on the app. However, I am not seeing what I type on my iphone on my mac until I hit Return on my mac keyboard, so handoff doesn't seem all that useful. Also, if I start something on my Mac my iphone isn't showing an icon on the lock screen on my iphone. What's up here??

Dosen't work for me I'm afraid. The only way I can get hand off to work is to sign out of iCloud and Sign back in again. However, once the Macbook is rebooted, it stops working again.

I had/have the same problem but it doesn't really matter. It seems you cannot actually pair iPhone and Mac devices in the usual way. You just need to have Bluetooth active on both devices then any app that needs them paired does it on the fly. So, Handoff, SMS, Calls, Airdrop etc. work OK without you having to manually pair the devices - just carefully follow the instructions in MAC Help. You need IOS 8 (maybe IOS 8.1 - not sure) on your phone and Yosemite on your Mac and Bluetooth active on both.

I wish the iMac Help actually explained the Bluetooth part It would have saved me a lot time playing around.

I've send a file with AirDrop on my iOS devices and now iPhone <> rMBP works in two ways, iPad <> rMBP works in one direction(from iPad to Mac) and iPad <> iPhone works in two ways

With all of these actions taken for the f..c.k.ing function to work, go tell Apple to fck themselves for releasing a half baked product. I saw the Hot Spot sign once when I updated the OS and never since. Continuity works on some, not all applications described on Apple Website and only works one way Mobile -> Mac...let me see: Note, Safari and iMessage only so far.

My mystery is solved. Handoff from iPhone and thus answering iPhone from MBP doesn't work on my 'old' MBP because the bluetooth protocol is 0x04 and should be 0x06.  Phone call will come in on my iPad mini which is nice. Don't need to carry two devices around the house.

    HI all

You don't need to connect your iPhone to the MB via Bluetooth in order to use Instant Hotspot, in fact you cannot, you'll get a message on the iPhone saying that this device is not supported. It took me a long phone call with Apple Support to find out how this really works.

In order to use Instant Hotspot, both devices must be logged in to the same iCloud account, support BT LE and have it activated (but not connected!).

If the Hotspot feature is enabled on the iPhone (but not activated), the MB will detect the vicinity of the iPhone thru BT LE and show the Personal Hotspot connection in the Wi-Fi menu (on top of the other wireless networks). Clicking on this connection will then send a request to the iPhone to activate the Hotspot feature. This gives the same result as manually activating the Hotspot on the iPhone, but without you needing to take the iPhone out of your pocket and without the need to enter a WPA password.

The bottom line to remember is that the two devices only need to have BT activated, but do NOT need to have an established BT connection. BT LE allows them to see each other even without having been paired.

After spending 2 hours of trying everything I read here in these posts...nothing seemed to work.

BUT, when I went to iTunes to turn on some music, I thought, lets go crazy and login to my apple account from there, to see what devices are registered. Then, immediately Handsoff worked.

I have handoff working on Macbook Pro, 2 different iMacs, and all pads and phones. But I still don't really know whats needs to be done in what order... Just don't give up

    edit.

What I do know, forget about save mode, forget about pairing bluetooth, its not needed to get it to work.
