Nov 13, 2014 7:47 PM in response to Alex_2008by doctor.energy,Similar issues here. Word crashing when attempting to add a comment in Track Changes after recent Yosemite install. I installed the Microsoft update located here:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=44920
Crashing has stopped and I am now able to add comments and changes to MS Word documents. The install took roughly 10 minutes. Good luck!
Thank you to other posters on this forum.

Nov 17, 2014 7:31 AM in response to doctor.energyby helenlotus,Thanks doctor.energy,
The latest Word update 14.4.6 finally worked for me. I had previously tried the 14.4.5 update but it just made the problems worse. The 14.4.6 update came out on Nov 11, 2014, and I haven't experienced any crash since the upgrade (fingers crossed!). Good luck everyone!

I tried re-installing MS Office 2011, and the crashes continued.
But when I clicked that little blue double-arrow box in the upper right-hand corner before trying to close a doc, Zowie!
Thanks again for your help.

Nov 23, 2014 12:59 PM in response to M9100009by MACARONnotMACAROON,I'm in my last month of my PhD and had I not been strapped into my seat on the plane two weeks ago, I would have jumped off something when my Word started crashing every two minutes.
Headed straight to an Apple store with my luggage in tow, after a bout of crying, a manager agreed to squeeze me into their schedule and fixed the issue in about five minutes. Although he accessed the Microsoft site for a patch, all anyone needs to do is open up Word, click on Help, and check for updates.
I have updated three times since my trip and continue to do so, i.e. today, when my cursor function was disabled.
Upgrading to Yosemite was a mammoth mistake both functionally and aesthetically.

Nov 24, 2014 2:32 PM in response to M9100009by mediashrink,Having trouble with Microsoft Word 2011 continually crashing--it's always been a bit unreliable but it has been consistently bad after Yosemite upgrade. Also does not save at time interval set in preferences (I have it set at 3 min but have tried other time intervals as well) so I've lost tons of work. Back up copy is seriously out of date compared to current work. Have tried updating, am currently in most recent version. Documents created before and after Yosemite upgrade perform the same. I never work in full screen mode, but I work across monitors from MacBook Pro to Thunderbolt monitor. Anyone tried Microsoft Live?

Nov 25, 2014 10:37 AM in response to M9100009by ChrissyOne,I'm running at 15" MBP Retina with 10.10.1 Yosemite, and Office 2011.
The problem first manifested itself when I tried to edit Word documents that I'd created on the Mac and then edited on the PC. Since the Mac version of Word leaves out a few pretty important functions like, oh I don't know, FONT EMBEDDING, I took the files to the PC to resave them with fonts embedded. I also wanted to set the order of Styles based on priority, which you also can't do on the Mac.
When I open one of these edited files back on the Mac, Word will crash when I click on anything in the Styles palette. "Show Style Guides" for example. Instant crash
I've tried everything above including a full reinstall, and the problem persists. I have tested my files on a Mac running Mavericks and they open and behave correctly with no crashes, so this is definitely a Yosemite problem.
This is a big problem and we don't seem to be any closer to finding the source. Please help Apple.

Dec 5, 2014 7:44 AM in response to M9100009by ibmontgomery,I had a similar problem. It would open but then I could not type -- either in an old or a new document. I moved office to the trash and downloaded it again -- Office 365 that is. It now works.

Dec 5, 2014 9:00 AM in response to GrantusMby Lisobelle,I have had my MacBook Pro 15" for 5 years and I never had a single problem until upgrading to Yosemite. Since the upgrade, I have experienced a multitude of problems.
I am having a similar problem with Microsoft Word 2011. Every time I open it, it immediately crashes. I can't even use it for 10 seconds.
I also am having problems with Excell 2011. It is not able to calculate things anymore when I type them into a spread sheet, even when I manually tell it to calculate. For example, I will type "=1+1" and instead of changing to "2" upon calculation, it still says "=1+1". It does not do this all the time. Sometimes this happens out of no where after it has been calculating things for half the spread sheet, than all entries go back to "=1+1". The only way I've been able to solve this is by making a new spreadsheet. It has wasted a LOT of my time.
I am having problems with several other things as well, including browser plug-ins. I have been posting elsewhere about these issues and I have tried EVERY potential solution without luck. If Yosemite is not the cause of all this, then maybe I have a virus? How can I diagnose whether this is an issue with the upgrade or something else?

Dec 5, 2014 11:56 AM in response to M9100009by fraserfromedinburgh,I've been having the same problem (office 2011). Open word then cmd + q, crash. Edit a document then some while later it just freezes, crash. Useless.
My solution has been to re-install and so far seems to be working. The procedure:
1. remove office from my system. I used appcleaner to remove all linked files from every office app.
2. delete microsoft user data from your documents folder.
3. restart
4. empty trash
5. install from original disc or image (it now works perfectly)
6. accept request to install update 14.4.1 (still works)
7. accept request to install update 14.4.6 (hold my breath)
8. accept request to upgrade database when starting word for first time
9. relax and wait for MS to throw and spanner in the works

Dec 5, 2014 1:56 PM in response to fraserfromedinburghby GrizzleyCoot,This workaround stopped the crashes on my Mac: Just make sure you don't have a MS Word document open in full-screen mode when you try to close the doc or quit the app. Mouse up to the top right corner and click on the blue diagonal-arrow box to come out of full screen mode. With that done, I can close the doc or quit Word without a crash.
Now let's get a real fix for it so we can abandon the workaround.

Photos for MacI'm able to quit in full screen without crashing since this workaround. That's using cmd + q or file > quit.

Dec 5, 2014 2:21 PM in response to Lisobelleby Sparkleberry,Remove MS Office 2011 for Mac and reinstall it. You need original install disk so you get the license number from it.
After installing anew, update that version, repeat, shampoo, shower, and rinse and eventually update to the current version.
See here for instructions from MS:
