OK, OSX Daily also said install Java 6. So I did. As yet I’m uncertain if it has worked as the pop up has been intermittent & unpredictable.

Terminal shows

java version "1.6.0_65"

Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_65-b14-466.1-11M4716)

Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.65-b04-466.1, mixed mode)

but in Sys Preferences/Java/About it reports I have Version 8 Update 25 (build 1.8.0_25-b27) installed.

So now I have no idea which version I have, or as yet, whether the pop up nags have been dealt with. Sigh.

hello arrmp,

After spending a combined 5+ hours on the phone with Apple Support, it turns out that, so far and until they come up with a permanent fix, your solution is the official Apple fix for the problem. I did it several hours ago and have yet to see the pop-up again.

While Java v.6 it is not a supported version, Apple assured me that Java isn't used in the Mac OS the way it once was, and that hackers can't use it to exploit weaknesses in Java to hack the system. I'm not a programmer, so I'll have to take their word on that.

In any event, Apple's engineers are aware of the problem and I'm told they're working on a permanent solution. Thanks for your contribution.

For me I tracked down the offending application to be Symantec Endpoint Protection, specifically LiveUpdate. My SEP was not updating since installing Yosemite. I solved it by downloading the entire Java JDK. There's some kind of issue with the Java 8 JRE (I believe it's not setting environment variables correctly).

It was easier to install the current version of JDK, than trying to debug the JRE.
