Q: Mac Office 2011 & Yosemite

Has anyone tried using Mac Office 2011 (14.4.5) on Yosemite?  Particularly interested in whether Outlook, Word, Excel and Lync function as expected.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9), MacBookPro11,3 16GB, 1TB

    I am using that also ;( works fine for me...

     

    I think you should try a clean reinstall...

    I.e. completely delete everything.. Then reinstall..

    Is anyone else having issues in Office printing? I can use the quick print feature without issue in word. But if I try to File>Print, it crashes. It does pop up the print preview screen, but crashes once I tell it to print to our Sharp printer.

    I have installed Yosemite.  Outlook 2011 version 14.4.7 is working but outlook 2011 search function is not working.  Anybody have the same problem.

    I have just upgraded from a Mac Pro on Mavericks to an iMac 27" Retina on Yosemite.

     

    I have been running Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac and since upgrading to the iMac on Yosemite I can no longer open Word, Excel, Powerpoint etc. I have reinstalled but no luck.

     

    I just don't know what to do next, it's odd given that many posters have had no problems at all. Has anybody any other hints? Thanks

    You could try download the office preview for 2015/2016  version...

     

    its it's free at the moment. It's a beta. But it works. There will obv. Be bugs.. But it is completely workable/functional imo

    Better than nothing. If other users can't help you fix the problem.

     

    if you have done a clean delete and reinstall... (By clean I mean deleted all trace files and completely removed from system - googling around will explain how to do that) - I think my link above explains that, if I remember correctly.

     

    another her option is to clean re-install Yosemite. But that's a headache for people like me, esp if there is a chance of not working.

    maybe a visit to a professional tech guy may be warranted too.. I mean for many of us office not working is not negotiable.

    Thanks, but in the meantime I did uninstall Office for Mac 2011 completely using online instructions and then I reinstalled from the original disks. This time it worked!

    Office 2011 for Mac mostly works for me. For reference, I am using OS X 10.10.3 (Yosemite - all updates applied) on MacBook Pro Retina with 16G memory. Latest version of Office 2011 for Mac with all updates applied.

     

    I should note:

    • Apps crash quite a bit, but not unusual for Microsoft apps. I've never seen a stable version. Just learn to save often.
      • It is worth noting that stability has improved over time.
    • PowerPoint doesn't seem to work with menus on external monitors, so I turn that off:
      • System Preferences -> Mission Control -> [_] Displays have separate Spaces UNCHECK THIS
    • There are minor font differences between Windows and Mac, so I usually have to adjust text boxes on slides slightly bigger to avoid ugly wrapping.
    • Links to local documents are stored as full paths, which means if I move a linked document elsewhere I have to updated all the links

     

    Office 2016 Preview is seriously broken, and the so-called improvements are steps backwards. For instance they removed customizations that sped up my workflow. Also, they don't appear to care enough to take feedback or provide information on updates. I sure hope they address these issues before release, but I am not too optimistic given their track record.

    Something is not right with your setup if the Office apps "crash quite a bit". I've owned every version of Office for Mac since Office X. Not one of them has crashed - ever. Just saying what you're experiencing is not normal.

    My Office 1011 is solid, no crash issues like you stated.  Also I have used Office 2016 preview with word and Excel and found no issues although I have not tried any custom work like you have.  However I do not see any Office 2106 features that would want me to purchase when finally released.  MS has not yet fixed the Excel red negative numbers in ( ) feature that disappeared when Yosemite was released.

    I had a constant lockup/crash with Office for Mac 2011 on Yosemite - specifically PowerPoint. And so, I hired an Apple certified consultant to replace the hard drive with an SSD, thinking it was a corruption issue reloading from discs didn't fix. I had similar problems with LR 6, and Adobe explained that there was an incompatibility with the Yosemite graphics driver, and to shut off graphics acceleration in LR preferences.

     

    Even with a new install of both Yosemite and Office on the new SSD resulted in occasional lockups and crashes with PowerPoint

     

    Another certified consultant suggested we remove Yosemite and reload Mavericks. Not much help.

     

    Needing a working machine, I bought a new 13 inch refurbished machine from Apple. It also crashed with an Office download install from Microsoft.

     

    An Applecare tech advisor ("Harley") may have found the problem with both machines. Apparently Office 2011 generates a raft of permissions errors on the hard drive every time you run it. To reduce crash risks you have to run disk utility almost daily.

     

    I never had problems with any other Office program except PowerPoint.

    Absolute nonsense rubbish. I’ve running Office 2011 on both Mavericks and now Yosemite without any issues what-so-ever since day 1. The part about permissions and running Disk Utility daily is total B.S. You’ve been given completely bogus advice by someone who doesn’t have a clue.

    I have to agree. That sounds like total made up crap to me.

     

    Sounds like the person they 'hired' to help hem is a fraud.
