Q: Handoff option not available on compatible Mac

I am working on a Mid-2011 MacBook Air with Bluetooth LMP Version 0x6 (with Bluetooth Low Energy Supported).  I am logged into the same iCloud account on my Air and on my iPhone 5S running iOS 8.0.2.  Both have Bluetooth on and are on the same Wifi network

When I go to System Preferences > General there is no"Allow Handoff between this Mac and your iCloud device" option.

I have restarted my laptop and iPhone, logged out and back in to iCloud on my iPhone, turned Bluetooth on and off on both devices, but nothing has changed.  Am I missing something that would allow me to turn on Handoff?

I double and triple-checked, and all the sources I've looked at say that the mid-2012 MBP is supposed to be supported; is this no longer the case?

Even more interesting is this: even though I'm missing the option to enable/disable handoff in settings in OS X Yosemite, I'm able to make and receive phone calls using the MBP, so something's not quite right.

I think mine is April 2012 so not mid 2012 and yes I can receive phone calls as well. Very strange.

I have a mid-2012 Macbook Air that I just installed Yosemite on and Handoff is working perfectly with my iOS 8.0.2 iPhone 6 .

Agreed. On my 2011 Mac Mini, I recall that on an early Yosemite Developer Preview, the Handoff option was there; it is now gone. I'm still searching for a hack to enable it.

It bothers me that Apple would make such a tentpole feature so exclusive.

Apple doesn't have a history of intentionally blacklisting computers solely to make people upgrade, but on the other hand, I don't see what good reasons there are to disallow so many computers from having these tentpole features.

Why did they present this at WDCC 2014?  This shows an MBA Mid-2011 as being supported

I have a MacBook Pro mid 2010.  While I'm also missing the enable/disable handoff feature in Yosemite, I can still make/receive calls and SMS via my laptop.

This is in line with the Apple support page here, which states the Phone Calling (iOS 8) and SMS (iOS 8.1) features only require a Mac that supports Yosemite.

I think that Apple have got this so wrong.

Forcing people to upgrade a Mac product that is barely 3 years old.

I bought a MBA in April 2012, unfortunately I was obviously caught out as it turns out that I have got a 2011 version.

    Tricked again.

Apple should have released Yosemite HandOff for all models that were able to upgrade.

    Disgusted.

I'm in the same boat... April 2012 MacBook Air with the originally-documented requirements (Bluetooth LMP Version 0x6). Phone calls are working just great, but I've got no option to turn allow Handoff. What's really frustrating is in the System Preferences search box, when I type handoff, it directs me to the General settings, but when I go there the option is not showing. Sooooo close!

Handoff is flakey, just like AirDrop.

I downloaded the patch just to enable Handoff so I could turn it on and off, trying to reset it. My mid 2011 Mac mini server had phone handoff and SMS forwarding working automatically when Yosemite was installed, but sometimes the Mac doesn't sense that my iPhone picked up the call, so it keeps ringing. Once I enabled this patch, AirDrop finally sorta worked between my Mac Mini and my iPhone. One way. My Mac can see my iPhone, my iPad and iPhone can see each other, but the iPhone can't see the Mac, and the iPad and Mac aren't speaking. Also, app handoff works fine between my iOS devices, but I get no such luck with my Mac mini, even with the patch and a reboot.

    Flakey.

I experienced the same until I used the continuity hack. Very frustrating.

This has to be untrue or either that Apple have changed the feature in one of the updates. I have a Mid-2011 iMac and it worked perfectly. Now they've removed it..
