Q: No internet connection after installing yosemite

After installing Yosemite, I have no internet connection. If I hold option key, my wifi description shows Internet as unreachable, although all my bars are dark and the rest of the settings  look the same. When I connected via cable, it did not show an Ethernet connection. My pc and iPad work fine,so it isn't my carrier.  Anyone else have this problem and know a fix???  Thanks so much for any assistance..

    HI Joe,

i went to /System/Library/LaunchDaemons folder, then looked up these 2 files: com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist and com.apple.mDNS_helper.plist. (made a copy of both and put them aside in a folder on my desktop just in case) then deleted them. I then restarted and voilà, working internet.

Uh-oh - I don't have these two in the /System/Library/LaunchDaemons folder. Now what?

Hmmmm... Does the sudo thing for you work? If not then you might have a different Internet issue altogether and I'm sorry I don't know how to help you there.

No worries - Thanks again. I'll continue to search for a solution. I'll reach out to Apple Support tomorrow.

in order to determine whether or not you do actually have the same issue as witchmd I suggest you do the following:

    1. Restart your Mac so the error will occur

    2. Log in and start Safari ... enter http://74.125.224.72/ into the address bar and see if that takes you to the Google website

If it does you actually have the same DNS error brought on by mDNSResponder still being active on your installation of Yosemite.

DIscoveryd and mDNSResponder should not be running side by side. Only discoveryd should be running. Use activity monitor and the console to make sure mDNSResponder is not active but discoveryd is. Hope this helps.

I had a file named com.apple.mDNSResponderHelper.plist, which is slightly different.  I deleted it and com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist.

I rebooted and still had internet access.

I read somewhere online that the file you had to load with sudo replaced the mDNSREsponder file.  I bet what was happening is that the install did not properly delete the DNSReponder file, and the system was getting confused trying to use the mDNSResponder file, which no longer works.

    Or something.

By getting rid of the old version, the conflict is removed.

    Just a guess.

I'm in the same boat. No internet at all. No mDNSResponder files in my LaunchDaemons folder. Sudo fix didn't work. Let me know if Apple Support helps, or you find a fix.

Replacing the entire LaunchDaemons folder is the only thing that has worked for me - thank you! Individual files strangely made no difference (and I tried all the ones that have been mentioned!)

    Many thanks for this!

Safe or Recovery mode provides me internet access but I can't use some of my apps so that won't help. I've been fighting this issue since Sunday and Apple Support doesn't seem to have a solution.

Can you provide us a step-by-step procedure on this? What do I replace the LaunchDaemons folder with?

    Thanks in advance.

Same results for me. I don't have mDNSResponder files in my LaunchDaemons folder and really need a fix ASAP.

    Hi csukale,

the IP address does take me to the Google website. So what should I do next? I don't know how to read the Activity Monitor. Ugh. Thanks in advance.

    Hi everyone,

I was struggling with the same (or similar) issue ever since upgrading to Yosemite.

    Here's my scenario:

    • Upgrade (not clean install) to Yosemite
    • Could ping/browse/etc by IP, not by name
    • Bonjour services also affected (ie: Airport Utility)
    • Booting into Safe Mode did allow the DNS stuff to work (although everything else pretty much sucked)
    • Doing the launchctl unload/load DID resolve my issue, albeit temporarily.
    • Killing the discoveryd process (via terminal -- kill -9 -- or via activity monitor) DID resolve my issue albeit temporarily
    • I did not have the plist files mentioned earlier in this thread
    • Replacing my LaunchDaemons folder caused my Mac to hang on boot (I had made a backup, and fixed by booting into single-user mode and moving the old files back into place).

I'd written a script to run the launchctl load/unload stuff every 5 minutes.. but this isn't a fix to the underlying issue.  I decided to work with apple support. I had a few chat sessions with them, to no avail. I kept being referred to the "wireless and multimedia" team to resolve issues with my Time Capsule.  Finally, I got someone who was willing to escalate the issue, and had me call in with a case number.  I spoke to someone on the phone for about 45 minutes, and did the whole song and dance with them.  After about 2 or 3 times being put on hold so that they could confer with a colleague, I was sent to an escalation point.

The person I ended up working with on the issue was adamant about getting my issue resolved.  We did a screen sharing/troubleshooting session. A lot of the stuff seemed odd and pointless (ie: "You shouldn't have anything in your home directory except for 5 folders"... which is completely arbitrary...), BUT... after a 1.5 hour screen sharing session, and some instruction from the tech, my issue seems to be resolved. I've not yet had to do any of the work around/hack "fixes".

    Here's what we did:

    • Remove contents of /Users/<myhomedir>/Library/Caches
    • In my "Macintosh HD" folder, I had a folder called "OS X Install Data". Deleted that.
    • In /Library/Internet Plugins, I had a few plugins that I was asked to delete. The ones that caught her eye were named Sharepoint*
    • Removed everything from /Library/LaunchAgents
    • Just for giggles removed preferences for a couple of applications like Spotify and Adium.

I then rebooted, and everything was back to how I'd expect.  The tech is (supposedly) going to call me back and follow up sometime today.. but at this point, I'm happy. I'm not sure which one of these changes actually solved the issue... but I'll take it.

I hope this helps someone else. I'll post follow up if anything changes!
