Q: Does Yosemite Improve or Reduce Performance?

Hi there,

I'm a user of a Macbook Pro 15 Retina from 2013, and I'm considering upgrading to Yosemite. Although I do want to upgrade for the new look and features, I do have one major reservation. If Yosemite is going to make my computer less responsive, laggy ect. then I'm going to hugely regret the decision. For me Mavericks is a great OS, and so a performance hit would seriously put me off. Can anyone share some experience they've had with the full version please?

Any and all feedback is greatly appreciated!

Then looking at my old late 2008 macbook, which was given to me with Mavericks on performed poorly, and when I downgraded it to Mountain Lion, it ran faster and more reliable with memory management. Yan you explain what I experienced ?

Catch 22, can't download Etrecheck 'cause I don't have Java 8, can't download Java 8 'cause Yosemite wont let me! I do appreciate your advice, shall ditch Mackeeper.......oops didn't realise it was nasty. Thought I was keeping mac tidy. Bought first Mac in 1986 - yes the original, been with them ever since, have iPad, iPhone & MacBook Pro. Is there an easy way to go back to Mavericks? Yosemite won't recognise my time machine.

Have you tried booting into Time machine ? To do this you press option key , and it would give you boot option icons

Etrecheck doesn’t use Java. So, there is something else causing problems in your Mac. Do you have some sort of java-based download manager installed?

For me personally it has drastically diminished the performance. I'm running a Mid 2011, 27in with upgraded 12GB of RAM, still have well over 700GB [out of 1TB] on the system and the OS seems to suck most of it dry.

I do run CS5 Suite Photoshop, Illustrator, some video programs a lot and they are 'ram suckers' to begin with. After 15 min of Photoshop especially, it almost becomes unbearable. Cursor is choppy, selecting a tool then wait a few seconds when the spinning wheel stops. It was never like that.

Odd, because they ran flawlessly, extremely fast when I originally had factory installed Snow Leopard (before I even upgraded any RAM) - I skipped Lion, upgraded to Mavericks. Slightly slower but still very manageable. Now..I don't know. Few bugs also: Sleep mode, I have trouble waking it up. Volume settings changed out of the blue a few days ago. The "pop/click" sound when I adjust the volume on my keyboard stopped working, I fixed that issue a few hours ago in System Preferences - someone from another forum gave me the answer, he had the same issue. Booting up used to take 15-20 seconds at the most, now it's around 90-100 seconds!

So if this keeps up, I will revert back to Mavericks or wait patiently and hopefully Apple will update to 10.10.1 VERY soon.
And then from there, I just hope the performance is improved.

I know some have no issues and love it. Sorry, for me this really is a bummer.

I have the same opinion of MrHoagie

Graphical 2D performance of Yosemite is terrible in compare with performance of Lion. I have an iMac 2012 i7 with 12GB of RAM.

If you try to resize windows is very terrible and poor performance of redrawing.

Iconize windows shown lack sometimes clearly.

Very poor interface and this design is very terrible. In my opinion minimale interface is a ****! This desing from Apple is a return to the past that never existed.

    Terribile!

The same things for iOS8 with iPad 3 and with iPhone 5.

With iOS8 ipad 3 seems to be a very old device simply by typing an email or an URL address in Safari

With iOS8 iPhone5 ever time I open Mail the app hangs on the rotation in portrait mode..... any time settings option crash....

    Terrible

It seems that this OS and iOS version are only for latest version of iDevice with new hardware.

It 's very sad because all this seems to be a policy to encourage customers to always buy the latest hardware available in the market

Sorry but the new design is very advanced design work... Its absolutely stunning...

I didnt think i would like it.. In fact when I first joined Public Beta some months ago I thought it didnt look nice...

Then it grew on me... Translucency is subtle but there... flat look is stunning...

Its just one of those things that you dont realise how much work has gone in by top designers...

The more you look at it the more you like it...

Their focus on design is something lacking in both windows and android...

They have made a huge leap too compared to past ver. of OSX

My experience with it is not good.

I've lost E:Mails and files since downloading, and my Macbook Pro is only a 2011 but I also experience it to be slower than Mavericks.

    Good evening Darklykoz

The graphical issues such as translucency, they are completely subjective.

    May like may not like.

The desing supreme and absolute do not recognize him in this release as well as it has always been evident in the past. It 's just a minimal interface and poor

This, however, might be acceptable accustomed with time.

Regarding the degradation of graphics performance ... to this we can not get used to. It should be remedied even earlier to 2012 device since we are talking of a minimal interface

Windows Vista had this translucent stuff in it...and it was removed in Windows 7/8 due to performance issues.

Java is not needed for Etrecheck, do it again.
