Handoff only working one way

I have the current MacBook Pro 13" Retina and iPhone 6.

Handoff works fluidly when going from my Mac to my iPhone however is not showing up from when going from my iPhone to my mac.

Both devices are logged into the same iCloud account, have bluetooth on, and have handoff turned on in their respective settings.

Help!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Logging out/in/out/in of iCloud made absolutely no difference here. Seriously, logging out/in of iCloud is an arduous procedure... about a half dozen warnings about deleting local data and merging things... geesh! Why can't you just log out and leave all local data intact? Then when you log back in, if and ONLY if local data has been changed, then ask about merging data. Not only that, within 24-hours, on every device, you're prompted to re-enter your iCloud password. WTH?

When iCloud logging out/in failed, this is what worked for me (in this exact order only):

  1. Turn off iPhone
  2. Turn off Bluetooth on Mac
  3. Turn on Bluetooth on Mac
  4. Turn on iPhone

It's holding after several re-boots and still working both ways.

I cannot believe it myself... especially after following every bullet item in the Apple documentation and having nothing but failure.

Apparently toggling bluetooth on the Mac clears something out, but only while the phone is turned off. Reportedly, if your one-way failure is the opposite, the procedure is the same, just replace iPhone with Mac and Mac with iPhone in each step.

This is just stupidly, ridiculously, sensitive.

Howdy Moose55,

It sounds like you’re running into a Handoff issue that's preventing the app icons from appearing in the Dock on your MacBook Pro when switching away from your iPhone 6. The article linked below has a lot of great information and troubleshooting suggestions that may be able to resolve this issue.

No idea if this is the problem, but when it was first released, I saw the same behavior when I had one device on a 2.4GHz network and another on a 5GHz network. It was the "same" network, but not really. I have an AirPort Extreme that broadcasts both networks and I have it set to show each with a different name. So, I was able to see they were on different networks. When I put them on the same frequency, it all worked fine.

Some routers broadcast on both and don't show both names by default.

Thanks for the hint/suggestion. I have a Time Capsule. How do you set the Time Capsule to broadcast the 2.4 GHz network and 5GHz networks using different names? Do the two networks have different passwords? How do you put all devices on the same frequency?

I opened AirPort Utility>Wireless>Wireless Options and have the following:

  • 5GHz network name is unchecked: MyNetwork'sName
  • 2.4GHz channel: Automatic
  • 5GHz channel: Automatic

I have been experiencing intermittent issues in which Handoff only works from my 2015 MBPr to iPhone. I can usually get it to work both ways if I AirDrop something from my iPhone to my Mac.

Thank you for your help.

If you have the same issues I have, then the only way to make it work again is to log out of iCloud on the Mac and re-login. However, this only works until you reboot. This issue has been there since 10.10.0 - 10.10.3. Its a pretty poor implementation given that its all proprietary hardware.

I've given up on Apple trying to fix this. Good idea, poorly executed.

I have the same issue Handoff works from my iMac to my iPhone but not the other way consistently. I have a macbook Pro and works perfectly on that.

I have tried everything signing in and out deleting bluetooth list apple even replaced the iMac in case bluetooth card was faulty but still nothing. I can get it to work sometimes but then after a restart it stops again. The same thing has never fixed it twice though.

This seems to be a big issue and one that needs fixing!
