Q: FileVault stuck on "Encryption Paused"

After upgrading my MPB to Yosemite, I elected to turn on FileVault. In the Security & Privacy panel of System Preferences, the status shows "Encryption paused" and the text under the progress bar reads, "Connect power adapter to resume encryption." Trouble is, I am running from the power adapter!

I have rebooted and tried another power adapter. The battery icon in the menu bar correctly changes from battery to power adapter as I connect and disconnect. However, the encryption status never changes. I have left the machine running overnight with no change.

Any ideas?

Same problem, get this though, on an iMac 5K.

Power went out while FileVault was running and I have a UPS. Now it's stuck with the "Connect power adapter to resume encryption"

I tried resetting the PRAM (let it to do it twice). Then tried repairing permissions and the disk. It said the disk was fine, but it fixed a few permissions.

Rebooted and the power adapter message appeared again.

Ok I hope I don't jinx myself here, but it seems to be working now. Right now it says "Optimizing..." (with the time remaining constantly changing, probably due to my continued use of the system)

    I did this:

Unplugged the USB cable going to the UPS

Rebooted resetting PRAM (cmd+option+p+r and waiting for 2 boot sounds)

Immediately held down cmd+r to boot to the restore partition

Went to Disk Utility and unlocked the drive (right-click on Macintosh HD)

Now I ran Repair Disk on the full disk (the top most Macintosh HD), not just the single partition.

Once that finished I Repaired Permissions and Repaired Disk on the Macintosh HD partition (the second Macintosh HD)

Then I rebooted and got to where I am now.

    Best of luck all.

    Hi !

What password did you supply to unlock the disk in the Disk Utility ? I have provided my root password, my iCloud password... it does not work.

I have the exact same issue but my MBP (late 2012) retina seems to work fine...but I want to get rid of FileVault as soon as I can... The only reason I did this was a stupid feeling that it would be "better and safer" for my laptop...whew...NOT.

Now I'm afraid to keep trying to solve the problem as it seems many of you have had it go from bad to worse.

The thing that tipped me off is that I was unable to set to auto login. I have always used auto logon when I'm home and password logon when I travel...

What a mess. Guess I'll back up and go to genius bar

    Hello,

I was having the same problem, with the booting process taking around 2 HOURS to even see the desktop window.

I have reviewed comments posted by some colleagues here and finally was able to SOLVE THE PROBLEM!

FILEVAULT 2 was definitely the problem (And YES, similar to other forum members here I have accepted the full system encryption during installation of Yosemite).

    Steps I took:

    1. Booted my Mac by holding down ⌘-R (Command –R) to boot from the Mac’s Recovery mode.

    2. Selected Disk Utility and continue.

    3. Selected my hard drive.

    4. Under the File menu (at the top), selected Unlock “Drive Name”.

    5. Then, selected Turn Off Encryption…

    6. When prompted for a password, entered the password of my main account.

Then I received a warning message that the decryption would run in background and would take a long time.

    7. Clicked OK and restarted my Mac.

    8. The booting process was then very fast (well, I was used to the 2 hours thing!)

Then after the reboot, I accessed the System Preferences / Security & Privacy / FileVault and noted the drive being decrypted.

It took approximately 5 to 6 hours to the full process to conclude.

Hope this post can help other people solve their problems.

Important: Always have a full backup of your files. Even if you don't use time machine, do it manually. Copy to an external hard drive, to the cloud, to whatever. But do it.

Last tip: If you are having problems even to get to your files to perform the backup, you can do the following:

    1) Book your Mac normally by pressing the power button.

    2) Press and hold the SHIFT key until you see that the computer entered in Safe Mode.

    3) Copy your files!

That's my first post. Sorry for being too long. But hope it helps folks out there.

I have found why the password does not work.

When booting from the rescue mode and when I launch Disk Utility, the keyboard layout is in French. But when the popup to fill the password is open, the keyboard layout switches to English, don't ask me why...

None of the suggested solutions works for me - Can't turn off encryption from disk util in revovery mode as "turn of encryption" is greyed out even after unlocking the drive by entering password. Same with or without AC connected

The "sudo fdesetup disable" command does nothing.  sudo fdesetup status returns "status: Pending"  and "Completion: 99,99%"

I'm really stuck here and really in trouble as I need the perfoamnace to get my audio work done..

After my decryption got stuck, I finally just did and erase/format and reinstalled OS X Yosemite.  Then I did a restore from my most current time capsule backup.  I upgraded my memory to 8gb.  Now Yosemite is flying.  I wasted way too much time with the fixes.  I should have just wiped/installed/restored files way earlier.

***** ONLY DO THIS IF YOU HAVE ALL FILES BACKED UP

There is nothing to do too, Disable Encryption is greyed, nothing works but this method :

    - Boot from the rescue partition

    - Erase the System partition : it was not possible to format it... an other bug in the Disk Utility.

    - Create an empty partition

    - Install Yosemite from scratch

    - Disable FileVault of course !

    - And then restore files from the timecapsule

I was able to solve my issue after 15 days of trying. here are the steps that finally worked

0 - make sure you are connected to a power source

1 - need to create some extra empty space on your drive. I have a 1TB SSD that was almost full. I removed around 300GB of data at first

    2 - restart your computer

    3 - reset PRAM (Command + Option + P + R )

4 - as soon as it reboots hold down Command + R

5 - select Macintosh HD or whatever your HDD is called

    6 - repair permission first

    7 - then repair disk

8 - then repair the main disk / parent HDD

    9 - then restart

FileVault started working for me right after that and it finished after about 15 hours. I turned it off after it complete the encryption and it took around 8 hours to turn it off. now everything is back to normal

Quite Strange .... After having gived up walting for a fix from Apple, my filevault suddenly starts again. After having been stuck for days it reports that it is encrypting and will be done in 10 minutes. BUT After that was completed it now reports "optimizing" still not allowing me to turn off filevault. "Great" thing is that my system reports that it will be optimizing for 12 days. Whenever I do ANYTHING on the computer, that number goes up a LOT.  My disk is 1 TB SSD with 380 GB free
