Boot into Recovery mode, open DiskUtility and Repair Disk Repair Permissions. Reboot and try again.

Thanks Leroy. Trying that now.
I have the same problem. If Leroys' works let us know
Will do. Followed instructions and am now trying again. With fingers firmly crossed...
crossed fingers for Greece
It hasn't worked yet. Going through the process again. Currently repairing the disk...
I am having the same issue, but when rebooting and holding command - R, I can't get into recovery mode.
I can launch Disk Utility from the failed install screen, but it's showing my Disk as being in Read Only mode.
I have no access to repaid my disc. Only thing I can do is verify permission and verify disc.
Permission verification finished
Disc verification stops and says disc need repair....how?
Update: I've carefully followed Leroy's instructions but without success so far. I didn't get the "Repair Permissions" option or the "Repair Disk" either initially. So, following the onscreen instruction, I selected "Verify Disk" which then enabled "Repair Disk" option. That failed so I got instructions to backu, reformat and then restore. All seems odd after not having any issues prior to downloading Yosemite! I'm now in the process of doing that and will advise on (hopefull) success, or otherwise, afterward.
I Have the same issue with a different error msg. Gets to aboutb15 mins install then fails.
ive tried repairing disk (judging by the log the installer does this anyway during installation).
ive even tried booting from USB key with the installer on a separate volume, this produces the
same error. My files are still on the disk, It just won't accept Yosemite ans Mavericks seems to not be there
aanymore to roll back to.
Further update: Currently downloading OS X Mavericks (no option of Yosemite given) and time given is 4 hours at the moment. I will keep you posted with progress as I get it. It's just as well I have this iPad too!
Frustratingly, I've had to restart from scratch - reformat the HD, download OS X Mavericks and am now restoring from backup on an external HD. As it's currently indicating 9 hours & 57 minutes, I'm going to let it do its thing overnight. It's as though I've just bought the ****** thing; bloody Yosemite!
I Have the same issue & tried repair disc, didn't help.... Can't use my iMac now....
HHow did you download Mavericks again?
It was one of the 4 options available from the Recovery mode - Install OS X Mavericks (you have to be online). Do the DiskUtility first and, if like me it couldn't repair the permissions, erase your selected HD. Then quit DiskUtility, which should take you back to the four options. Select the OS X option and direct it to the HD.
