You can copy UNKNOWN and paste it into the blocked list -- no number typing needed.
i am running 8.3 and the blocked list only allows me to choose from contacts, there is no place to paste anything?

It's not possible to block unknown and 'blocked' caller ID calls on the phone itself. Contact your carrier. They may offer that service.
I searched copy and paste on iPhone and there is a way to do this. My 1st answer said go to recent calls. Use the copy feature. Copy unknown caller. Go to contacts and paste unknown caller. Now you can block.

Call blocking is based on the Caller ID string received from the carrier. If it is blank, "unknown", or "blocked", then you can't block the call on the phone.
