A Safe Mode boot deletes some system caches that can help after an OS X upgrade.
Top left corner of your screen click the Apple > Shut Down
After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.
Then click the Apple top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click: Restart
Then try Safari.
If that doesn't help, it could be a third party plug-in that's causing Safari to crash.
Follow the instructions here.

Oct 17, 2014 1:19 PM in response to Carolyn Samitby mcoluccio88,Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for the response but that does not seem to help. The problem started immediately upon the Yosemite upgrade and I am not running any 3rd party plugins on my Safari. Any other ideas?
Thanks

Oct 17, 2014 2:24 PM in response to Carolyn Samitby aarild,Same story as mcoluccio88.
However, I did have a few plugins running. When I deactivated them Safari worked for 40 seconds instead of 10, but now it's back to where it was. Spinning after ten secs.

Oct 17, 2014 2:58 PM in response to aarildby mcoluccio88,So I just tried this and it worked for me: (typing this on Safari now!!!)
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

Oct 17, 2014 3:12 PM in response to mcoluccio88by Carolyn Samit,Please check for plugins regardless.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Click Go.
What plug-ins do you see in the Internet Plug-Ins folder?

Oct 17, 2014 3:21 PM in response to Carolyn Samitby flee671,Hi Carolyn,
Thank you! This solved my issue! Although on Yosemite it seems like there's no more startup sound. So what I did was once the screen turned on I pressed the Shift key and released it once the Apple logo showed up. It took a long time to start up (as it says on the Apple safe mode boot page) so I knew that work. Once it's up I restarted and everything's working great now. Been using Safari for a few hours now and no freezes. Thank you so much!
Or if this didn't work for others perhaps manually deleting cache.db as mcoluccio88 did would:
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db
Click Go then move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
Hope either of these methods would work for others. Thank you hive mind!
Frank

Oct 17, 2014 8:23 PM in response to flee671by Linc Davis,Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Oct 19, 2014 2:55 PM in response to flee671by ffrancois,I was facing problems with apple+F for a while and since Yosemite update safari was crashing or wasn't able to show the windows/tabs.
I was able to use safari normally after a restart without extensions (shift pressed during start) → and finally found that the old Glims extension was installed on my machine. I removed glims and everything is now working well.

Oct 20, 2014 6:22 AM in response to Stevo88by francescocap,Sorry for my ugly english, i'm italian. In my case, the problem was iCloud Drive. Try to deselect Safari options in iCloud Drive preference panel.
