Q: Safari freezes on startup Yosemite

I just upgraded to Yosemite and now Safari (version 8.0) is unusable. About 10 seconds after startup Safari would freeze and the beach ball would appear and won't stop spinning until it crashes or I force quit. This happens every single time. I've tried disabling my extensions and trashing my preferences, not to mention restarting countless times, and nothing would work. I'm not sure what else I can try to fix this. I'm running on a mid 2013 13-inch MacBook Air. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

    This link helped me. http://georgegarside.com/blog/how-to-fix-safari-8-crash-since-yosemite-dp4/ I ran the commands in terminal and the lag in Safari seemed to disappear.

    Well, I thank the Apple god that before I messed with Yosemite, I purchased an Airport Time Capsule and backed up the drives on both computers.  Contrary to what some may tell you, by using Time Machine, I was able to re-load the old OS and all date/programs and ever since it's worked without a hitch.  Now a friend of mine told me he was in the Beta testing for Yosemite, and had a similar problem, but after reverting to the old OS, he tried loading Yosemite again and had no problems.  I've yet to try that and might just wait for either a patch or updated version of Yosemite before I try again. 

     

    And still scratching my head, my i-Mac works like a champ under Yosemite. 

     

    I know it may not do some people any good, but backing up the disk before adding any new programs will be my SOP from now on.  I didn't have a back-up when I installed Mavericks and the computer acted a bit sluggish----mainly it seem to take a while to wake up the Wifi when I first would try an internet link.  Anyway, better safe than sorry. 

     

    I still am unhappy with Apple for all the time I wasted and for them not entering this thread with some help.  this all reminded me too much of my PC days struggling with Windows.  Yuck!!!!

    the "sharingd Stopping Handoff advertising" log time is Safari.  Close Safari and it goes away.   My Safari has been "beech balling" me  a lot lately.   Wonder if my problem is related to OPs.

    For those using antivirus, pay special attention to virtual keyboards and Safari extensions in general. In my case Safari was working ugly even after a clean Yosemite install. Deactivated the Kaspersky virtual keyboard and everything started to work as expected. There were some occasional lags either from time to time that I fixed deleting ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/Cache.db, that you can trash and and definitively delete closing Safari. Changes under the hood to OS X and Safari are deeper than it seems, so many extension became simply incompatible

    I had a very similar issue on my Macbook Pro having upgraded to Yosemite. Resinstalling OS did nto solve the issue. Upgrading to 10.10.1 also did not solve the issue. Removing caches and preferences from /Library also did not solve the issue.

     

    Safari would completely freeze a few seconds after it was started up and with it it was completely locking up the OS. The only solution was to reboot the mac.

     

    I think I found a solution though. It is working for me now for a few hours so I have a feeling it may be a good solution.

     

    I deleted a different directory all together : ~/Library/Safari. Interestingly this is the one with the favorites and other thing but to my surprise after Safari restart the Favorites were not gone as I expected them to be  - so good for me although I am not sure how it works then....maybe something got saved iCloud.

     

    None the less. It was not plugins, it was not anything form /Library. It seems to have been some corrupted files in user's library Safari folder.

     

    Try it..maybe it will work for you. My problems are gone for now ...i hope for good. If not, I will post it on this thread...

    While I would agree that the main problem is Safari, when I downloaded Yosemite on my Mac Book Pro, other functions were also sluggish---certainly not the lightening speed Yosemite promises.

     

    Additional factoids I've found:

     

    ----First, Yosemite continues to work flawlessly on my i-Mac (circa 2010).  Ultra-fast speed and all other advantages Yosemite promises.

     

    ---I recently replaced my old Mac Book Pro 15" with a new one.  When I talked to the sales person, I was told Yosemite was pre-loaded.  However, that was not the case on the 15".  It still had just Mavericks 10-9-5.  However, the smaller 13" versions had Yosemite.  Now I suppose this could be due to the timing of when these new units were built (compared to the final release of Yosemite), but it also raises the question of whether this Yosemite problem is unique to something in the 15".

     

    Has anyone had this problem with Yosemite who owns a 13"?? 

     

    When purchasing the new Mac Book, I had some other problems with the sale, but happened to raise this issue with the rep I spoke with.  They knew nothing about the problems we've all noted.  I was told Apple Tech department does monitor these chat threads, but that still begs the question of when will Apple step up to the plate with a fix.  For the time being, I'll hold off loading Yosemite on the new Mac Book Pro 15"

    You are my Hero of the moment, i was frustrated with Yosemite and with Safari always hanging , just deleted the Cache.DB , safari is flying now.

    Has anyone been having a Keychain problem that started with this Safari  problem? I kept getting asked for a  "Local items" password and none of my previously used passwords would work. However when I fixed this problem, my Safari problem went away! I hope this helps someone.

    Hi All,

     

    Almost instantaneous crashes for me too...

    Went through this entire thread and many others! deleted/Terminaled/re-installed/Safe Moded....the lot!

    Nothing!

     

    Then read somewhere else of someone with the exact same crash report as me and the guy who replied simply said "sounds like an hardware problem" and gave this link:

    Thanks. Same problem and removing the cache database was the solution for me too:

    I had this issues too, the fix was(i did 2 things i wasn't sure what made it work) unchecking safari from icloud settings in system preferences, and then repairing my boot drives permissions. boom safari opened fast and have been using it for 30 minutes no crash.

    I could not even start up Safari. Looked here.  Like Arex_Q I unchecked Safari with iCloud and I also did the software update that brought down Safari 8.0.6 and then Safari started up. So I went and downloaded Firefox...... Not going to be without a browser.
