When trying to place a phone call with my 2012 mac mini & iPhone 6 the sound quality is very poor i.e. the voices are very high pitched and garbled. Has anyone else experienced this problem and found a solution?

I do have the same problem with last iMac. Looks like it's using internal microphone. I tried to switch to an USB Headset but it doesn't work (same headset with Skype or Lync works perfectly)
My experience is pretty much the same. Regardless of what mic, headset, or speakers I use the audio is always high pitched and/or garbled. Skype works fine with the same setup. I did try the usual troubleshooting like rebooting, moving phone closer/farther away, and moving my router closer/farther away. So far no luck.
I tried using my Bose QuietComfort 15 (with a 3,5mm jack and microphone). Works perfectly.
It looks like microphone is correctly used with a 3,5mm jack/headphones connection and do not work with a USB one.
I think you might be right, I tried unplugging my logitech c615 webcam that was plugged into the USB port and things now work perfectly.
Indeed unplugging my logitech USB camera and using the earpods fixes the issue for me on a late 2012 Mac mini. Thanks a lot!
