Q: Slow shutdown on Yosemite

On a three year old MacBook pro shutdown times after installing Yosemite have gone to more than 3 minutes. First the screen goes black and then the spinning segmented wheel continues for about 3 minutes.  No outside programs/util installed except the required Java.

Nothing to do with Parallels but as I found the solution to slow shutdown in this thread I though it could help someone else...

I looked at both /Library/LaunchDaemons and /Library/LaunchAgents folders and I found a "leftover" from an old HP printer software - com.hp.launchurlagent.plist at the Agents folder.

After deleting it shutdown time decreased from 2+ minutes to 3 seconds!

Don't get confused by the fact that some of us are talking about Parallels. Parallels is NOT the problem.

Problems arise when some "orphaned" files remain in the above mentioned folders, after removing an application... in my case, for example, there were some files left from Parallels and other files from another application: I had to remove all of them to solve, not just those related to Parallels.

Quite correct. I deleted old Parallels preferences, but another app left some traces in LauchAgents and LaunchDaemons subfolders. After I trashed them all, my Mac shuts down in a few seconds. Thanks a lot for the tip.

I deleted the files PAPYAPPLE listed and sure enough, after one more painful 2.5 minute shutdown and restart ... shutdown was 3-5 seconds.  Thank you!

This sorted my problems, from a 3 min shutdown to less than second. its almost too fast now!

I deleted all files in relation to parallels, and too those in the launchdeamon and launch agents folders found in the library.

    Awesome help. thank you.

Can anybody help me? I have to force the shutdown every time on my Mac because it's taking forever. Just this morning I tried to turn it off, put it in my backpack, walked to the office (15-20 min) and it was still trying to shut down. And, worst part of all, I never ever had installed Parallels in my entire life so I don't know where to look...

If you close the lid, it does not continue to shut down, so the time when you had it closed, was not all shut down time.

But you can try looking in Macintosh HD> Library>LaunchAgents

Macintosh HD> Library>LaunchDaemons and deleting any files in those folders. this worked for me.

    @al.århus

That is good to know! I thought it would continue, but still it was several minutes before i closed the lid. I already deleted all the non-essential files in those directories. The only ones present now are actually needed... I really don't know where to look anymore

I have kinda the saaaame problem..

Sometimes it shuts down "properly", it only takes 10-20 seconds, before used to take only 2-3 secs..

But most of the times, it takes for ever.. It actually never shuts down. It only shows the desktop background and all the apps in the bottom and it stays there.. I have to shut it down manually or it would never do.. I guest I would have to do a clean install or I dunno... I never had parallels so that's not the problem.

I have MacBook Pro Retina 15'' early 2013. It still working pretty fast with most of my apps like photoshop and maya.
I'd love to do a clean install but I just can't atm, I'm full of work.

Also, I practically never shut down the computer, it's almost always on. But sometimes I've to do a quick restart, and it takes forever cuz never shuts down...

    Any solution?

Same story here, the only thing the seemed to help is that I removed ALL of the login items, did a clean restart (still took quite some time) and after then it takes ONLY 20-30 secs. It's a little improvement but not a solution.
However I'm gonna do a clean reinstall in April.

I did the same, removed a few login items and it helped a bit.

I hope to do a clean reinstall soon!

So,  i took a chance and bought the program you mentioned,  and it worked for me too..   I was at my wits end trying every last thing and CleanMyMac2 did fix the shutdown hanging problem, it also cleaned up 8gb of space for me too!...   However,  i noticed for me that i can't use a picture as my desktop background otherwise the issue sometimes comes back...    What a freaky situation for all of us...      But any who,   I now support CleanMyMac2 and i'm glad you posted this..   So thank you!

Perfect! I'd installed Parallels as a trial a couple of years ago.  The link provided fixed my up in seconds went from 2.5 minutes to 15 seconds!

To echo other success stories. I migrated to a new MBP running Yosemite (10.10.3) after having uninstalled an old version of Parallels and began experiencing 3-5 minute shutdown/restart times. After moving the above-mentioned Parallels files to the trash and emptying the trash, my next restart was 3+ minutes. But thereafter it has been almost instantaneous. Thanks!

YES!  Annoyed by this problem for months.  Thanks very much for this nifty solution...also a result of an old Parallels install.
