Q: com.apple.geod process is not responding

I noticed in activity monitor under the CPU section that com.apple.geod is not responding and does not after a reboot either.

What is this process for and what is not working at this point?

Thx

Dick

I just upgraded from an late 2009 iMac to a new 27" with 5K display - love it.  HOWEVER, I have had EXACTLY the same problem you are having and it began as soon as I migrated my system over from the old Mac.  I've been in touch with AppleCare but they don't seem to have a handle on it either.  Time for another call and I'll use your post as supportive documentation.

Best of luck, Richard. Post if you receive any satisfaction from Apple. My iMac is a late 2012, so it is not very old at all.

I failed to mention that I also went the route of disconnecting all third party devices from it, which were my iOmega external HD that I use as my Time Machine, a Belkin 2.0 USB hub, Bose speakers, and the Ethernet cable. Only think connected to it was my Apple Extended Keyboard. I bought a brand new G Drive USB external HD from the Apple Store (as they recommended) to replace my iOmega external HD. The iOmega is also a 2012. They decided not to transfer anything over to the new external because they "just don't think it's the problem." I also bought a new HooToo 3.0 USB hub to run from it after it was "fixed." More money down the drain. I've also been advised to start up in Safe Mode, then restart back to my normal desktop. Oh the hoops I've jumped through!

Let me also share that each time the unexpected shutdowns/restarts occur, I told AppleCare that I usually had iTunes, Calendar, iMessage, and Mail active in the Dock. They felt my machine, with 8GB of memory, should be able to handle that. Indeed.

I've been in direct contact with Apple 13 times since January 30, 2015, including taking it in to the Genius Bar for a clean install.

    Keep us posted!

Correction: The latest update to Yosemite 10.10.2 was on January 28, 2015. It was after that update when the iMac began to really experience the unexpected shutdowns/restarts on a daily basis/more frequently than in the past, and when I contacted Apple.

I had 10.2.2 on my 2009 iMac and had no problems with shutting down (although it did slow the system down).  I feel your pain on all of the hoops you've jumped through.  However, here's my take.  Everything worked just fine with my old Mac.  Now, after spending three grand on a "souped up" one (extra memory, faster processor, larger drive), I've got these issues.  Every time this thing dies, it generates a trouble report that I send to Apple and I expect them to resolve the issue based on the data reported.  I paid a boat load of money to be able to press the button and move on to using the computer as a tool instead of having to become an IT nerd (nothing against nerds - they're usually rich!).

My plan is extremely simple - they fix the problem or I return the iMac, revert to my old one and buy another one when they finally get this thing worked out.  That might get their attention.  In case this sounds like over reaction to you, I had this thing restart right smack dab in the middle of a business webinar I was conducting, disconnecting a dozen or so folks.  I simply cannot afford problems like that.

Might be a god idea to start a separate three on this topic - I'll bet we'll find that there are more of us with this issue.

Please use that thread.  This thread on com.apple.geod has nothing to do with your Mac shutting down.

I'm going to add my reply to the list here.  I'm seeing the same issue with com.apple.geod not responding.  And I think this has been happening since the first release of Yosemite.  The really annoying part is I have 3 computers.. two of them running Yosemite.  One works with geod and the other geod is hanging up.

I had this issue.  What worked for me was that in iPhoto/Preferences/Accounts, the password for Facebook was incorrect.  I updated the password and now that error does not show, even after more than an hour.  It used to show up seconds after I killed the process.

I don't have iPhoto installed on one of the systems that I'm seeing this issue on.

Maybe a similar program that can upload to Facebook or similar social media?

Update to 10.10..3 and see what happens.  Seems to have gone away on my Mac after that updated (so far anyway).

It was a bug with 10.10

10.10.3 seems to have fixed it.

    Thanks!

Can anyone else also confirm that it's been fixed?

If this is fixed, then I see there's still complains about Finder and Preview crashing.

Maybe I'll do a clean install when 10.10.4 comes out. I'm using 10.9.5 with my rMBP13. It's amazing how long they took to fix the bugs. Well, not really that surprising given how many new things (iOS related) they want to throw in to OSX. Sorry, but I'll probably never use an iPhone.

The issue appears to be gone in 10.10.3.  I have been using since this update and no issues.  Was always there with 10.10.1-10.1.2.  That being said on another note I see fewer console log entries with Mavericks on my one Mac than Yosemite on my other Mac so for me I still prefer Mavericks.
