Q: USB port 1 & 3 not working, BT not available

iMAC 27", Mid 2011

The USB port 1 & 3 (1 is near the firewire port) are not working, also Bluetooth is not available.

I try to reset PRAM and SMC but it didnt change the situation.

When executing Hardware Test (Diagnostics) no errors are found (short and long test). When in the hardware test, all USB ports are working.

AND afterwards when restarting Mavericks the USB port 3 works again - but when I then unplug the mouse, put it to port 4 and back to port 3 it does not work anymore. (I didn't check if the same happens with port 1).

Any suggestions how to fix it?

In order to really do a valid SMC and PRAM reset you should do them 2-3 times back to back, sometimes they simply don't work the first time. Instructions for each are in iMac SMC and PRAM reset. If you still have problems after the third reset then try switching cables or devices. It's not that uncommon for devices or cables to fail. If the problem really is a bad port your only alternative outside replacing the main logic board ($$$) is to connect each of the devices to a powered USB Hub and connect the hub to one of the remaining working ports.

    Unfortunately it doesn't change anything.

Yesterday I reinstall Mavericks from scratch (erase hard disk and install OS). Now no bluetooth icon appears in the menu bar - even not in system preferences.

Some further issues I notice but I'm not sure if they are related to the bluetooth issue:

    • it takes about 60sec. after a reboot/restart until the apple logo appears and the progress indicator is running
    • I found a lot of USB error messages in the logs:
$ sudo dmesg | grep USB

    • It seams to me like the internal USB hub is in trouble.

Unfortunately I can not compare it to a working iMac.

Finally the mainboard had to be replaced. Fortunately I have an extended warrant (3 years) so it doesnt cost me anything. otherwise about 700-800 EUR had to by paid.
