I think the sidebar got removed. I can't find it either, but if you go to the playlist tab, isn't that more or less sidebar like? The top element in the left playlist is "Music" where you can see your entire library and still have the devices and playlists.
Go through each of the sources Music, Movies etc. and select Playlists. Use the ellipsis ... to enable the sources you want to see. Apps, Tones, and Internet Radio don't have a Playlists button, the others do and remember your selection. Not quite the same as it used to be, but not too different. Other view controls are available from the drop down at the right-hand side.

"Go to the view menu and select "show sidebar" or if you are using windows ctrl-s keyboard equivalent will take care of this"
True in iTunes 11, not in iTunes 12. In the latter, the sidebar is displayed when you select Playlists, as shown in tt2's response.
Open iTunes.
The row that has "My Music - Playlist" etc. Select "Playlists"
You should now have the sidebar.
Move to the right of that same bar, and there is a drop down that has: Songs, Albums, Artists"
Select those, and you get a close approximation of the earlier version of iTunes. (You know. The one that worked) 🙂
Version 12?!? I hope they fixed some of the problems they created with v.11!
If you plug in your device you still get the sidebar for that.
I don't see how they can remove it for that!
I had the same issue, but when I clicked on "playlists" it came back.
