Learn about Family Sharing

Q: What about families that have seperate financials. My partner can't buy items on her own card?

Can families not have two credit cards? Some actually many have their own credit card. I know it's like its like living in the future.

as it is now in I could just as well just sign in with the same account everywhere. The point of family sharing is that you share. That shouldn't mean that one has to share card as well

    Hi Sverri,

When using Family Sharing, one member - the family organizer - agrees to pay for all charges made to the account, though if they have gift or store credit that will be billed before the credit card. See this article for reference -

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

    Best,

I thought Apple was a forward thinking company? How 1950's is it to assume that only one partner in a marriage has sole control over the purse string. Ridiculous.

    RIP Family Share.

It's a new feature and most likely a technical and licensing thing. No need to bring drama into this.

Brother Cool is right - I don't need to know what my spouse buys and vice versa.  Since iTunes and its content falls under the category of entertainment dollars for the most part, it's up to each of us as responsible adults to pay off our purchases.  This doesn't mean I don't want a shared calendar for my family so we can manage the schedule and household tasks easily and jointly without sending appointment requests back and forth.

Sure the barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen metaphor is probably a bit dramatic, but this policy of one payer is a bit draconian.  The option is great, forcing the policy undermines the other great features of family sharing.

Note: I try to keep track of what goes on my credit card(s) so I can check that there aren't fraudulent charges when the statement comes in.  Having somebody else able to bill to my credit card undermines that ability.  Likewise, giving Apple an interest free loan by buying iTunes cards to circumvent this system also seems a bit silly.

If you want your spouse to pay for her own content, then she can sign into the iTunes store and buy things with her own card.

You don't have to enable family sharing to share calendars. You can share a calendar with anyone.

You can enable home sharing in iTunes to share music over a network.
