Q: Safari running slow in Yosemite

I have 2013 13" rMBP 8gb ram.  Ever since I upgraded to Yosemite Safari has been running slow and lagging.  When I type text into address bar it takes a while to catch up and for the text to appear.  Also, scrolling on webpages is delayed.  Would appreciate any help on how to fix this.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Glad to see I'm not the only person that's seeing this problem. I have been considering doing a restore to Mavericks, but am hoping that Apple will fix this.

Here's another "me too" post with the same problem.

Safari slows to a crawl and the entire system becomes unresponsive.  A reboot fixes the problem, until it reoccurs after the  computer sleeps.

I ended up restoring Mavericks from my Time Machine backup in order to have a usable machine.

I also have the same problem. Very annoying and frustrating. I have two macbooks, no such problem on macbook air 2013. Safari is on and off not working on macbook pro retina 2012. And in HK the genius bars for ALL apple stores are ALWAYS full. I wonder where can I complain?!?!

One more person here with the exact same problem!! Sadly I don't have Time Machine turned on for my MacBook in order to restore to Mavericks (I know, I should).

I really don't want to have to restart my laptop every time, so I'm resorting to using Chrome like so many others until there's a fix for this. I'm amazed the problem is so widespread, with no fix yet though... :-(

My Safari was running at 200% CPU. I did everything above but it didn't help.

Then I disabled Javascript and WebGL and restarted Safari. This helped.

I could even enable both again and restart Safari. Safari now runs at below 5%.

I think it's more than just Safari.  When I installed Yosemite, it asked about using iCloud drive.  My WiFi is through a crummy shared Hot-Spot that has a very slow LTE connection.

When I go to turn it off, it warns me that all of my Documents on my Mac Book Pro Retina will be deleted!

How do I turn off the iCloud Drive and keep all my files local.

    Thanks

    Nick

My cpu has basically stopped working since upgrading to Yosemite... so disappointed. I can barely surf the web. First time since owning a Mac that I'm regretting it.... My crummy work PC running windows is doing better.... The new Safari has issues on Yosemite.... So much so I've download Google Chrome for the first time in my life and is the only way I can write this post. So disappointed....

I tried the first item of removing all website data.  But the second one found no files.  I copy pasted the link in Finder and it found nothing.  I don't like that I can't just reset my cache in Safari anymore.  I am sloooooow!       It is like running dial-up.  Can you confirm the link?

I too have same problem, & hope someone from Apple takes responsibility for providing a solution.

In 2 days of Yosemite, I saw the Spinning Wheel of Sleep more often than 10 months of Mavericks/Safari.

Unacceptable on a late 2013 MBP with 16GB memory, & my broadband speed is always >50Mbps.

Update:  I finally called support and after about 15 minutes or more on hold someone got on the line.  I don't like that I cannot reset my safari cache as easy and convenient as it was before.  The guy wanted to screen share, but I just wanted to do the initial two steps originally given on the first post.  He had me go to Safari menu, Clear History and Website data.  Then (and I can't completely explain all of this) he had me go to Finder and the Go menu and type the command key and a letter and get to library. Library is not there unless you type the command and this one key.  Then I went to cache file and deleted the contents.  I'm sorry I can't remember the key he typed (I was cooking dinner while on the phone with him hopefully some of you who know more information can fill in my gaps. Then he had me restart my computer and then empty my trash.  You can't do the trash first or you will get a cache.db in use message.  When you restart additional files will pop in the cache but that's ok.  That worked.  I no longer have dial up speed.  I hope this helps a little.  Sorry for my gaps.  Did I mention I hate that you can't just reset the cache directly from Safari?  :-/

This in combination with the suggestion from someone else to change the "User Agent" to 7.1 seem to make things better, but there is still some major issue. For example WebEx is very slow, tried with Chrome and it works flawlessly, so it has nothing to do with ISP, Router, Antivirus, etc., or even Yosemite for that matter.

The combination of the part-solution given in the 1st post on this thread, plus your additional info about closing down Safari, Restarting the computer, then emptying Trash seems to have speeded-up my experience. Whether it lasts, is another matter ....

    But thanks

The ADDITIONAL (in bold) info provided here seems to have solved things. But I don't yet know if it's permanent:

I have this problem as well. late 2007 2.8Ghz iMac, 4GB ram. Upgraded over Mavericks (never had this problem before).

I'll try the cache suggestion above when I get home tonight. Hopefully that fixes it!

For me, going to Preference, then Extensions and turning off VideoBox extension immediately solved the 5 second page load problem. No need to empty cache, no need to even restart Safari.

Wonderful. Pages load immediately.  Thanks to the first few posts for giving me a direction to experiment with.

Spent ages on this today both with my broadband provider and for the last 2 hours with Apple Support. Did all the various resetting etc of the Pram, SMC, deleted Cache etc, started in safe mode, umpteen restarts. I was getting download speeds of 0-2mb/s v 43 on my wife's mbp with Mavericks.

The final solution the Apple guy gave me to try was to create a new wifi location which we just left as untitled. Once we done this I was flying again. Worth a try for anyone still having problems.
