Zip drive won't eject disk

I have an older zip 100 USB drive that is connected to my G3 iMac DV+. Tonight I've run into a problem that I've never encountered before and wanted to get some input and advice from someone on the forum.

My problem is that I use the zip disks to back up individual folders in my home directory (everything except music, movies, and pictures are under 100mb). This has worked nicely as a backup strategy until tonight, when two different disks have refused to eject after the file copy was done. The Finder gives me a message that "The disk (diskname) is in use and cannot be ejected. Try quitting applications and try again."

I don't have any other applications running! Right now I only have Finder, Dashboard, and Safari, none of which should be doing anything with the disk.

I have rebooted, used Disk Utility (which doesn't see anything wrong with the disk) and even tried the Iomega Tools (which doesn't have an "eject" function, duh!).

I've read where some folks have had problems with Zip drives in Tiger, is there a documented issue? Or is this something that only I am faced with?

Any help or advice appreciated!

Hi KonKrypton,

If memory serves me well about these external Zip drives... as long as the zip disk icon is not mounted on your Desktop anymore...

You should be able to spot a small tiny hole somewhere near the slit of the Zip drive, normally under it on the extreme left or right side, that is the "manual override" if you like, and is common in all external drive devices, including optical drives (CD & DVDs)

Use a paper clip and straighten the end, and push it into the hole until the disk is ejected, that should "release" the disk from the drive

Cheers

Thanks for the info! I got the disk out of the drive, but not that way. This drive has a button on the front (instead of a "paper clip hole") that usually ejects the disk, but it would not work while it was connected to the iMac.

So I disconnected the zip drive, powered it off, then powered it on without connecting it to the Mac. At that point, pushing the button got the disk out.

I'm still wondering what has changed to make the drive act weird. It worked fine about 2 weeks ago, the last time I did a backup. Not sure why all of the sudden it is acting up on 2 different disks. I'm almost afraid to try another one!
