How do you export to H.264 in iMovie 10.0.6?

Hi

We're supposed to export videos to H.264 in iMovie 10.0.6. How do you do that?

I opened the file in quicktime and checked the inspector to see the h.264 description.

Later today I will experiment with using 4K and the custom slider, to see if I can get much smaller 4K files that still look good on YouTube. That slider is kind of nice.

Maybe, like me, you were looking for the old quicktime listing, with a lot of choices from mpeg-2 to mp4 to whatever. That was really nice.

Thanks for showing the screen shot hughmass.

Forgive me for asking, but I really want to see this in action and I can't seem to export to 4K. Is the rendered file 41 megabytes and 1438x808 or just the preview when you hit cmd "I"? I am just confirming that the file produced is the 3840x2180 and its a compilation of clips put together in a project.

I really want the 4K export and would like to find out why I am unable to share at that resolution or if it is iMovie.

Thanks,

Steve

Rats. I seem to have done it by accident. Must have left a clip selected in the browser and thought it was from the project.

One can export in 4K from the browser, but not from the movie one creates.

I spent an hour trying to find a workaround and answer your question, but then read the help which explained things.

So as far as I can tell, one can only export 4K from the browser, and only for a clip or part of a clip.

Here's what you do. First click the export button at the top right corner of the program. Should look like a square with an arrow pointing out of it. Select file. Select "Custom" in the Quality options. Unless you wish to change the slider to a higher or lower Mbps, don't, the file will export fine if you leave it at 20. After this simply continue exporting the file. It will save as an H.264.

If you wish to check if it has saved as an H.264 file, right click the file and select "Get Info". In the side bar that pulled up, click the drop down arrow for "More Info" and your file format will be next to "Codecs".
