Nov 1, 2014 11:11 AM in response to roccitby Graham Matthew Booth,Currently it's 993, but I tried the other ports suggested in this and other strings to no avail. I have deleted the account in Preferences and reinstalled it. I have restarted the computer several times, I have changed the plist text to 'true', etc, etc. Nothing has worked. Not happy about checking via myemail.com, since it involves entering my email account's password.

Nov 1, 2014 11:33 AM in response to Graham Matthew Boothby bkh1918,I am by no means a geek, but did you try Johns3112 fix? It worked for me and I left the port 587; he had to change his port. Changing port to 25 also worked for some. Do you need to check SSL...I didn't.

Nov 1, 2014 11:35 AM in response to roccitby Graham Matthew Booth,Thanks. I can use my Claranet email account with its web portal, so I can still email with this account via my browser. But that's massively inconvenient vs accessing it via Mail on my my Mac.

Nov 6, 2014 1:30 PM in response to Graham Matthew Boothby bufgin,This worked for me from another poster.
Quit mail
Open up Finder
In the Finder menu bar select Go > Go to folder
type in ~/Library and click Go (on my kb the "~" is next to the left shift key)
Open the folder Mail
Open the folder V2
Open the folder MailData
Double click to open Accounts.plist (should open in TextEdit)
Find the block of data that contains the offending mail account
Find the line within this block that says <key>UserAllowsInsecureAuthentication</key>
Change the line below this from <false/> to <true/>
Quit TextEdit
Restart mail

Nov 7, 2014 1:35 AM in response to bufginby Graham Matthew Booth,Thanks, I too tried this, but like everything else it didn’t work. Apple Support managed to get my business Sent mail working, but the folders are still a mess and it’s still not working as it should.

Nov 9, 2014 7:02 PM in response to Graham Matthew Boothby 8fleetfeet,I've tried all of the suggestions in this discussion and NOTHING has worked. I think I'm going to have to switch to another mail app.
-
Nov 10, 2014 12:40 AM in response to 8fleetfeetby Graham Matthew Booth,Like you, I am going to start investigating alternatives to Apple Mail. This is really terrible - to know that it is such a common problem and for Apple not to have a fix.

Nov 10, 2014 7:31 PM in response to nwpmikeby Mike Ditchen,I'm another person that had a fully functioning email application that no longer works in Yosemite. I've tried different ports, changed settings, etc. and I have yet to find a solution that lasted more than an hour.
Have two other Macs running Maverick. One on Yosemite. I feel like I'm back running OSX 10.0 or 10.1. Beta ware that Apple claimed to be finished software. Having run Apple computers since 6.5 (I had a Break for 8 bumper sticker), this is the most disappointing software Apple has ever offered.

Nov 19, 2014 7:08 AM in response to Mike Ditchenby johns3112,Has anyone tried the latest update yet? I am lucky and have everything running OK except my calendar and contracts sync so I am reluctant to risk installing the updates.

Nov 19, 2014 7:19 AM in response to johns3112by nwpmike,I did update Yosemite and then changed the port back to their original settings. I can now send emails.

Dec 9, 2014 2:51 PM in response to elidiegoby miranda.armando,Something that worked for me was to remove the current smtp account, close Mail, open Mail again and finally create again the smtp account.
I checked the box "Detect and remain the settings of the account" (by default it takes the port 465 and checked "SSL" in my case), and the authenticy was established by password.

Jan 5, 2015 5:15 AM in response to nwpmikeby dusanofrode,SSame problem here. Been like this since 10.10. Hoped for a solution with 10.10.1. Was surprised that nothing was done.
ANd and there is a lot of other terrible problems with the Mail app.
